OMIGODOMIGODOMIGOD!!!!!!!!!
i had THE BEST TIME at the show last night...
first, i have to wholeheartedly agree with Phobos' post...this was, =
without a doubt, the best show that i've seen them do (this was my 6th =
time...) - the music was perfect, James' voice was spectacular, the guys =
had a lot of energy...it was just an awesome show!
but that's not the whole story...
i left work early yesterday so i could get there and get a good spot on =
line so i could end up right by the stage...my friend Jon and i got =
there at about 4:50 or so (there were only about 8 people there at the =
time (including 2 girls wo came from JAPAN (!!!) to see them), and they =
were just hanging around, so there was no real reason to 'get on line' =
right away, so i just hung around with the other people that were =
there...)
anyway, about 15 minutes after we got there, the band bus showed up. we =
got to meet, talk to, and get autographs from John P., John M. and Derek =
as they brought their gear into the place...my friend that came with me =
is a bass player, and he brought his bass (which he's already gotten =
signed by Geddy Lee and Les Claypool) with him, and we got John Myung to =
sign it for him (which made his night), but, being a very, VERY amateur =
drummer, i was still waiting for my hero to show his face...the =
one...the only...the Almighty himself...Mike Portnoy!
about 30 minutes later, MP rolled up in a limo service car, but he went =
to the back of the building and didn't come out for another 15 minutes =
or so...when he does, i have to restrain myself from bowing down at his =
feet...i talked to him for a few minutes and he signed all of my CD's =
(including writing 'Carpe Diem!' on ACOS). i told him that i was just =
starting to get into drumming, and i said to him, 'if i can manage to =
acquire 10% of the talent that you have, then i can die a happy man.'. =
his reply was something like 'well, you're certainly easy to please.' =
after that he was about to head inside, and i told him that i was going =
to try to catch one of his sticks (i've been trying for the past few =
shows...), and he told me that he'd be looking out for me...little did i =
know what the night had in store...
it was a warm day, and they had the side door open, so we got to listen =
to a lot of the sound check...they did PS, and they must've played CIAW =
for a good 15-20 minutes...they did a few other things, too, but i'll =
get to that...
End of Part I

when the doors opened, i was the 4th or 5th person in, and i ended up =
with a spot up front right in front of Derek on the left side of the =
stage, which was fine with me. the opening act was OK, but i was just =
really anxious for DT to get on with the show.
they came out at about 10:20 or so, and they started with ACOS I and II =
which led into JLMB, and the night just got better and better. when =
they did PS, after they did the first chorus, they segued (sp?) into the =
end of 'Have A Cigar' by Pink Floyd! what an awesome transition...they =
pulled it off flawlessly! they played a few bars and then went back to =
PS. they didn't do very much from Awake...in fact, i think that the =
only thing they did was Voices. later in the show, some of the guys =
took a break, but JP and MP stayed out and gifted us with a good chunk =
of the first track from LTE (Paradigm Shift? i don't have the CD in =
front of me...). that kicked so much booty! those two are just =
insane!!
later on in the show, MP went into his drum solo. as usual, he started =
off amazing, but after about 2 minutes, he started playing on just a =
single tom-tom, and it looked like he was moving out from behind the =
set...and he was still playing the drum! when he emerged, we found that =
he was carrying what looked like a 12" or 14" tom-tom with Majesty =
symbold all around the sides and a microphone hooked up to it. he =
proceeded to the right side of the stage (opposite where i was...) and =
handed someone in the front row a pair of sticks. he then rested the =
drum on a stool and proceeded to have the guy he gave the sticks to PLAY =
STUFF ON THE DRUM WITH HIM! it was so cool!!! and, of course, i was =
very jealous...i would've given anything if he did that with me...and =
then it happened...
after he finished fooling with that guy, he picked up the drum, came to =
the left side of the stage, PUT THE DRUM DOWN IN FRONT OF ME, AND HANDED =
ME A PAIR OF STICKS!!!! i was in shock...it was a dream come true! we =
fooled around for a few minutes, and then he took the drum back up and =
finished his solo, but that i was already past the high point of my =
night! they finished the main set soon after with ToT, and the encore =
was Metropolis into LTL into Puppies on Acid (i think...don't quote me =
on this one) into ACOS VII to finish it off.
i can't wait until tonight to see if they can top this performance, but =
i don't think anything will ever top that experience with Mike!
tale care, everybody!

would you? i think i know at least one VERY ready and willing pupil... =

Any ground breaking news about DT or any other band worthy of

actually derek does use a real leslie on stage (sometimes 2). i agree
that the VK is a nice piece of kit, i just didn't like the live sound.
it was more likely that the leslie was poorly miked or the house mix was
just wrong (as it often is). the jaxx show organ sounds seemed stronger.
plus, the BX-3 _is_ dual manual, which is a plus. it was actually at the
show, sitting in a flight rack offstage....

:) good luck, dude. derek's about as likely to talk to you as john myung
is to break out into an acapella version of "o solo mia" in the middle
of a show (what!!??). he's certainly got a different attitude than MP when
it comes to the fans. if you _really_ want the lowdown, try to find the
keyboard/bass tech. he's kind of short& stocky, with glasses and a goat,
and he's pretty approachable (unless it's showtime).

No, no, everyone knows that the only Brazilian band worth listening to is Angra :) BTW I just got a bootleg, Angra 'Unplugged' which is fucking brilliant... They manage quite magnificently to turn those melodic-symphonic-speed-metal-symphonies into beautiful acoustic songs, with ease.... Now if Angra can do this, surely DT can :)

How I got into DT -variation:
Fist heard DT on the radio in Denver, spring 1993, the rest is history, yada, yada, yada....
I recently upgraded my stereo. WOW!!!! That wasn't the 'real' DT I was listening to before, just a pitiful reproduction.
I built my own main speakers and partnered them with a "high-end" subwoofer (Velodyne, F-1200 if anyone is interested). The bass - FU****G UNBELIEVABLE. Half of SDV was missing without it, MP's double-bass --right in the chest!
I know many of you play in bands or jam with other musicians, and have also experienced them live, so you may know what I'm talking about when it comes to what's missing when you play the discs at home compared to what the band really sounds like (ie., live). I can't say enough about what a good sub can do for the home-audio experience. If any of you have high end gear, you know what I'm talking about. If you don't - go to a high-end store, bring your favorite DT discs, and ask to audition a high end system with a subwoofer (built-into mains or separate). Sit back and listen- you'll be amazed.
I know a lot of YJ's are broke college students, so I'll make a suggestion. Study hard, get good grades, get your degree as fast as you can, save your money (forget that, finance it!). Forget about a fancy car, invest in a "high-end" A/V system FIRST! It won'[t bring DT into your living room, but they'll a lot closer on a daily basis.
BTW - I'll show you mine if you show me yours. - http://www.mdo.net/users/inavarro

This is an excellent point. I have a legitimate question, though (which means that I'm not trying to bust your balls over this): What about the people (like myself, I guess) who don't care whether music is simple or complex? There are people out there who can appreciate Hootie as much as they can appreciate Dream Theater.

No, but Mike was right - you copped out on the last email when you didn't answer his questions. For the record, was it totally appropriate or necessary for you to post this private email conversation between you and him to this list? Maybe it's me, but you should have kept this private.

DT puts out what they want to. I dont see what this has to do with integrity. Would you rather them put out the same music album after album (like AC/DC)? They have a right to change. They have a right to make money also. Music is their job and source of income.
> Just to clarify: I don't expect DT to do anything to satisfy me, it > would have just been nice if MP would have answered my questions. > Bottom line is: DT would do what they want no matter what I'll do, but > I wouldn't buy their CDs saying "hey man, it's still DT!!!" if they > start putting out crap. There is no law that everyone must like every song on every album. I think he answered your questions completely.
He needs to make money from his music. Without the money a second job would be required. This would cause the music to come out less often and there wouldn't be any tours. Why go on tour if it doesn't make any money? Do you know what it takes to support a family? Being a struggling musician trying to get noticed is tough. You have to work a second job and do your music by night. DT has the right to not have to work second jobs. What DT puts out is great and I hope it continues and they have continued success.
Music is a business. DT doesn't have to answer to anyone.

First off, isn't posting personnel email between 2 individuals to a mailing list a big no-no, no matter who it is ? If you have a problem with MP not answering your (stupid) questions then take it up with him in private, there is no fucking need to air and laundry, clean or dirty here...
For DT to survive they have to start to sell some more product or they'll end up on some small time label with less support than they have now, no promotion and a one way ticket to throwing the towel in..
If you are questioning DT & MP's integrity you are way out of line. If you want to shit on ppl we admire and respect make sure you do it out of our sight and in the gutter, I might add, where you and your stupid questions to MP belong...

I just recently received my compilation (Into the Great Unknown) from Open All Night records. I must confess, the reason that I got the cd was to hear the first two tracks. Periodically I listen farther, thinking that perhaps the music will grow on me. Those first two tracks (the one by Dream Theater) are excellent. It is always nice to hear DT live, and for an audience recording, the sound is awesome. I look forward to their all-DT releases.
On another note, has anyone heard of a group called "Full on the Mouth." Apparently they will be the first band to release a single on DVD. I was reading an article on this release--the song is called People Mover--and at the end of the article, it was mentioned that Full on the Mouth would be touring with Dream Theater through the month of May.

No, you're an asshole for posting private e-mail to a public list. And unless you're willing to dig into those pockets of yours and feed Mike's kids, you've got quite a pair to demand that he (and the band) cater to your every whim without worrying about where the funding comes from.

So new to the Ytsejam list. I was hoping that I would never have to find myself in this position but I fear that I am going to have to disagree with someone here.
First of all, Serioussi, your attitude towards Mike was completely rude and out of line. You question his method of making his living and supporting his family. You question his music making. There is an extent to which one's honesty should be taken, and you were flat out inconsiderate and disrespectful. The fact that Mike continued to take that nonsense from you surprises me. I hope it's not people like you who are going to turn him and possibly other band members away from their fans on this list and in personal email because of some silly personal opinions. To quote Solomon Short (again) -- "You're not entitled to an opinion. An opinion is something you need when you don't have all the facts. When you have all the facts, you don't need an opinion."
If you've read most of the backgrounds of the people involved in the band, you know that the diversity of influences is astounding. Why not make the music that they want to make? The group's goal in life is not to please you, it is to make the music they want, support themselves and their respective families, and take their fan base on a musical ride of bliss and harmony. (at least, I think so. They've certainly done a good job with a great number of people). If they make music on a cd that you don't like, does that make it bad for everyone else? Does that mean that they should stop because you say so? Does that mean that when you drop a dime, you expect people to grovel at your feet and pray to be able to lick the dirt drumbs of the bottoms of your shoes?
Obviously, from Mike's responses to you, he is quite unhappy with the way you have treated him. I guess it is a measure of his fan loyalty that he hasn't flat out ignored you or turned right around and told you what you can do with your opinion and which part of your anatomy it would best fit. I sure would if someone were pulling smack talk like that.
Show some respect. If you don't like something, don't listen to it, but don't go back to the band and tell them that they're putting out nonsense. When they want your opinion, they'll give it to you.
Man, your whole response leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Ugh. Someone have a bottle of Listerine? I can't believe some of the smack that you said to Mike. Someone outta wash your mouth out with soap.
Now that's discussion. (:
