Well, that was a friggin' riot! I've never had so much fun, yet been so
tired in my life...
Waiting outside was cool, all of the 'jammers hangin' up front were a
model for other DT fans to look up to. Shout outs to Chris "now I can
pronounce your name" Ptacek, Al from home in Minnesota, Derek "I want
that medallion!", Scott, and all of the other folks whose names I can't
remember.
Highlights of the wait included the pot-smoking guy Scott mentioned; in
addition to lighting up on the sidewalk at noon, he drank beer that was
in the trash. Classy! Also, seeing Chris go off on walkabout with Mr.
Keyboards was _the_ coolest. Don't worry Margaret, you'll get to go with
next time Chris meets a star :)
In the Vic.. FOTM was pretty cool, IMHO. Music-wise, it wasn't really
DT-esque, but it still rocked. Personality wise, they were 100 times
nicer than Big Wreck. Slappin' hands, getting the fans into it. Very
cool.
But then, we were there to see Dream Theater. And play they did. I will
leave set lists up to someone who can remember (or has it given to
them), but LitS was the highlight for me. The crown was absolutely nuts,
at the beginning of the show when DT came out it seemed as loud as the
_end_ of some concerts I've been at. I am so happy I went, now I can't
wait for August.
Lastly, Myung spoke to me! Me and some other guys were hanging out by
the bus to catch the band on their way out. As usual, JM made a bee-line
for the bus and went in. JLB came over and chatted, and someone asked if
John was coming out. James said that he "probably wants to chill," or
something like that, and Jmaes went in too. I don't know if James talked
to Myung but 5 minutes later he came out and signed autographs & took
pics and stuff. He was very cool, and I got a few words out of him.
_That_ I will never forget. Now my ACOS is completely signed! Me so
happy.
Well shit, I'm rambling, so to wrap up... I want more!!!
See you at the front of the line next time, 'jammers...

Funny he is being mentioned now. There is a guy here that I work with here who is a big fan of his. He introduced me to him and ever since then I've seen a lot of stuff on him (A bootleg video, a tribute concert, the previous post, etc.) Pretty good for a rockabilly guirarist, if you like that stuff.

Hello all, Everyone else from the Chicago show has posted so I thought I'd better. Being a mild celebrity (Rumor has it I look like Geoff Tate) I thought everything went pretty well. I got the meet the world famous Hugo, who came out of the woodwork to become MP's mentor. Not bad. Jill, (my girlfriend, who doesn't look a thing like Mrs. Tate AFAIK) Derek (Frantz, not DS) and I arrived in Chicago about 3:00. When we found the VIC I wanted to do two things, park my truck and pee. Both seemed to be just a little less then finding the holy grail. I ended up parking in a hostipital parking lot a few blocks away, and peeing in port-a-pot at a construction site. We stood in line for what seemed like days. Poor Jill was medium to well-done before we got inside. She had the unfortunate luck of being behind Mads in line and also getting accosted by the Amazon at the door. Jill was trying to do me a favor and smuggle in a camera. Oops. Oh well, you can't win if you don't play. I thought the show was really cool. I also thought the adheasiveness of the jammers was awesome. As soon as a recognized Jammer approached the line outside, they were let in right up front with the rest of us. I got to meet several Ytse-Celebs while I was there. The party included, but was not limited to; Ptacek, Mads, Dale Newberry, Al from Minnesota, Scott "Babyface", Derek Frantz, and a couple of others that escape me. It was pretty funny watching Mads after we thought Chris and DS had eloped. Up 'till then she'd just thought all the DS being gay talk was a joke. I think she was really worried!
All in all, it was definately worth the 6.5 hour drive up and 6.5 hour drive back. I had a blast.
Mads had mentioned scanning some photos. I have a scanner and a CD burner. If anyone from the Chicago show, or any other show, has photos they would like scanned, I'd love to do it. I can either email you the files or put them on CD. If I get enought I might throw them all on a CD and distribute them to the Jam and a memento of the '98 tour.

I am selling my xp50 and decided to post across all the music related newsgroups I am on to see if anybody wanted to bite. I have the following: Roland xp50 with 61 banks of sounds on four disks for about $800 or best offer, two SBK roadcases, one slightly damaged for $50 for the good one and $35 for the slightly damaged one, a single tier quicklock stand for $25, and five expansion boards for the xp at $200 each. The five boards are the Vintage, Keyboards of the 60s and 70s, Session, Bass and Drums and SuperSound Set. I am trying to get up money for a Yamaha ex5 and the roland is not doing much for me as a blind person. I would consider selling the whole thing for about $1500. If these prices are too high, let me know, pease. I need the 76 keys of the ex5, and the sampler sounds like a great starter sampler if nothing else. The xp is in great shape and I have owned it for 2 and a half years, but feel the need to expand and move on to something newer. The EX5 would make a great controller for a TR rack or a jv2080 if I ever wanted to replace the xp, which I do. I love the board, but need more than what I have. If you happen to be Allan Holdsworth ;-).
Seriously, it depends on the player's style and personal preference, but usually, you don't ONLY play legato. A lot of people just go half and half, and use it as a way to execute fast passages easier, maybe because their left hand happens to move faster than the right. But some (like Petrucci) don't use legato much (even though his PMU solo is full of it) picks just about everything. Another guy who does this is Al DiMeola (one of Johns influences, and its pretty obvious). Personally, I try to do it the Petrucci way, and I also spend a lot of time trying to build up right hand speed, I just like that sound better (not to say I don't use it at all, usually I use it as a cool effect, to make the guitar sound more smoothly).

Honestly I have to say Petrucci impresses me a lot more than Vai. I know Vai can play emotional, and he's more flamboiant on stage, but I really think John has a better knowlage of when to play what. he talks about that in his instructional video, and mentions that "the song comes first." Which is true (imagine a blazing shredding solo in Hollow Years, that would sound off). I also like Petrucci's alternate picking technique better than the lagato style, the notes sound more punchier and individual that way, I think, not to knock lagato, Petrucci does use it (solo in PMU) but the alternate picking sounds better to me. I guess it comes down to a "my fav player's better than your fav player" argument, but it shouldnt be that way. I belive that each player has their own individual style, and I don't really like saying one is "better" than the other as a fact, just my opinion (though some guys really do blow others out of the water).

Well, its not an exact quote, but its pretty close. It was taken from a video called Genesis: A History and it was from a clip from about the time of Nursery Cryme. I really think that this quote goes for all of prog. I think not paying attention to the band and getting drunk or dancing or moshing or getting high is an insult to the band on stage (The Who, as I've heard, feel the same way, in fact, I think thats the reason why they started smashing their instruments because the audience wasn't LISTENING to them, and they got pissed ;-)
Then again, thats just me.

I beg to differ. Having gone to a John Petrucci clinic, I was able to see him perform the two songs he wrote for that Sega game. Now THAT is JP shredding :-) If you think he's been shredding on CDs, he has, here and there, but these two little pieces of music are balls-to-the-wall, no-prisoners, no mercy shredding guitar solos :-)
I hope they put that stuff out on CD someday.
But of course the high point of the clinic to me was the cover version of Purple Rain, which had much more emotion and depth than shredding. So I guess JP DOES favor songwriting over flashyness most of the time... thank God he does let lose sometimes though ;)
