Okay, we've recently gone through yet another spat of rap bashing here on
the jam, which means I want to show that not all rap is bad. Buckshot
Lefonque is one of Branford Marsalis's projects. They play rap, hip hop,
jazz fusion, r&b and funk. Branford rips on sax (I'm not generally a
Marsalis fan, but on this and with Bela Fleck he kicks).
This song, "No Pain, No Gain," is pretty heavy, but the first thing I
noticed about it, as I was also reading, the first time I listened to the
album, was, "Hey, isn't that Bela Fleck's banjo and Howard Levy on harp?"
Talk about sampling, this is the first rap song to sample from Bela Fleck
and the Flecktones in my knowledge. Victor Wooten also guests on bass.
Albert Collins shreds on funky guitar.
Give it a listen. I think it's pretty cool. It's only a 2 meg mp3 so it's
not a lot of trouble to give rap another chance, is it? Buckshot Lefonque
has 2 albums, their self-titled, which this is from, and MUSIC EVOLUTION,
which has my fave song, "Jungle Grove," which is jungle (obviously).
Next week, or later this week if I can find one short enough, I'll give
another example of good rap music, from Vernon Reid's MISTAKEN IDENTITY.

Eeeks thats rough man!
For future reference, windows95 keeps a backup of a lot of your important
system files in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSBACKUP folder. Many times you can
replace a file like that by booting to just a DOS prompt (maybe with boot
disk)
and copying it from the sysbackup folder to the system folder and rebooting.
Sorry for the NDTC, but thought this might save some folks future headaches...

Funny. As I sit here with the screen appearing a bit hazy and the sudden urge to eat everything I can get my hands on, and, of course, listening to the LA HOB DT show ('dat some acronyms for ya) on liveconcerts.com, I find myself really liking Anna Lee. I really thought that song was a dud when I first bought FII, but live it's completely different. Good stuff...
Anyone listening to this thing hear James make a fool out of himself again? Right after I meet him in Philly and had a good time talking to him he's gotta make fun of the fact they're broadcasting over the 'net. I remember a thread way back in the day discussing whether James was anti-inet or not. Were there any conclusions there?

Well usually I say Angra's my fav bands after DT, but I wouldn't have bought any Angra discs if I hadn't gotten into DT either.
So I would have to say I'd probably still be in my 'previous listening mentality' and be listening to 'previous' bands like Soundgarden, Live, Stone Temple Pilots and Cypress Hill. Since I was clueless about music too and little more than one of the sheep, I'd probably right now be into others bands like MatchBox 20 and shit like that....

By the time you will read this, I will have recorded the Dream Theater performance at the House of Blues live from www.liveconcerts.com. Due to some technical difficulties (not caused by me, but by LiveConcerts), it was _not possible_ to get a flawless recording because their live connection at a high bandwidth was lost about 30 minutes into the show and didn't work for about 20 minutes. And, at the end, the same problem occurred. (In the beginning of Metropolis I) So, about 2/3 of the show was recordable at the highest possible bandwidth.
What I plan on doing is this. Under the same label that has released Fasten Your Seatbelts, a compilation of the best tracks from Dream Theater's performance at the House of Blues will be available on CD very soon. (For those of you who haven't received your copy of FYS yet - it's coming! Finals are upon me, so I haven't been able to send out the orders, but they are in fact ready!) Here's what has come out perfectly well:
ACOS I/II Just Let Me Breathe Burning My Soul Lines in the Sand Caught in a Web (w/ drum solo) Peruvian Skies Guitar Solo (Paradigm Shift, Flight of the Bumblebee) Pull Me Under Trial of Tears
Voices, Hollow Years, and Anna Lee were all lost to shit because of the unfortunate souls at LiveConcerts. (I did grab them at a 30kbps stream though) And, I did lose Metropolis at the end too because the server went down AGAIN!!! (Screw that website!)
So, I will take the best 74 minutes of the above tracks and put them onto one CD. The quality is probably going to be the same as Stream of Consciousness, considering that boot was also recorded via LiveConcerts.
I will let you know the exact details of the CD later this week. I just want people to know how the broadcast came out and how they will have a chance to get it on a CD.
