I think it'd rock. Though coming up with DT songs that are angry enough
for Fish when he is the bile-filled Scotsman is sort of hard. Fish could probably
crank out "Just Let Me Breathe," though, and they could follow it with "Mirror/Lie,"
"Space Dye Vest,""LTL," ACOS (non-screaming version) and "Only a Matter of Time."
With an encore of "Fugazi," "Incubus" (a test of JP's emotion-evoking guitar
skills), and "Brother 52." Twould be a great gig.

    > Some things to think about. I'd definitely include "PMU" and "TTT", > which leaves about 25 minutes.

I wouldn't include TTT. When they do it at their own shows, they have the audience participate in singing the chorus. That's fine if the majority of people are familiar with the song. But if we're going under the assumption that most people at the DP/ELP/DT shows aren't too familiar with DT, then I would advise skipping TTT. There's nothing worse than expecting the audience to sing along and they don't. I saw this happen to Stepehn Pearcy's post-RATT band Arcade when they opened up for Bon Jovi. I felt really bad for them. Pity is not a selling point.

As for my own suggestions, I'd probably go with:

NM Lie BMS TSM (electric version) JLMB PMU Metropolis ACOS VII

    Here's my rationale:

NM- LiTS is a much better opener, but it's too damn long. I'm going under the assumption that DT will have an hour to play. In the 12 minutes of LitS, the could play two or three other songs. It sucks but that's life. Anyway, NM would be a cool opener. It goes through a bunch of different moods, yet it's still accessible.

Lie- Opening slots are a good way to not only have people hear what you're currently doing, but to give them a glimpse into your back catalog as well. And at least in the US, Lie was the biggest single off Awake (to my knowledge...if CiAW did better, let me know and I'll revise my proposed set list). Plus, it's a good head-banger.

BMS- A single off the current album and another one that audience is likely to be familar with. Another good head-banger as well.

TSM- Well, you can't head-bang forever. This would provide a change of pace for the show, demonstrating DT's ability to write catchy, melodic songs as well as heavier ones. If ELP is as light as people on here are saying (don't know myself, haven't heard them), then this might appeal to their fans. I chose the electric version simply because it will make the transition between the two easier. I'm picturing something along the lines of what they did at the Birch Hill show a couple years back, where at the end of "Scarred" Mike went into this drum beat that serves as the transition into TSM. It would work well coming out of BMS. If not TSM, then an electric version of "Hollow Years" would work well here too.

JLMB- If anybody nodded off during TSM (or HY), this one will wake them right back up. It may not be a single, but it's heavy and, most importantly, it's current.

PMU- What DT show would be complete without their biggest single to date? I thought about this as an opener (ala "Waking Up The World" tour) and that might not be a bad idea. But if not as an opener, then definitely towards the end. This one has got to have a few people singing along.

Metropolis- Even if people haven't liked what they've heard so far, this one has to impress them on a purely technical level. It shows DT's "prog" side. The version they did at the Fix '96 shows is probably longer, but it would make for a good transition into.....

ACOS VII- I'm picturing them going straight into this after Metropolis. It not only exposes people to the ACOS album, but serves as an absolutely killer way to round off the evening.

I haven't timed this out or anything, but I'm pretty sure this would fit into the alotted time. We've got 3 from FII, 1 from ACOS, 2 from Awake, and 2 from I&W (their most popular album). Basically the main idea behind the set list I presented is to hit the people hard, hit them fast, and put your most accessible foot forward all at the same time. And always leave them wanting more. Sure, it doesn't demonstrate all the facets of Dream Theater. But it does touch on some of them and should be enough to wet people's appettites. After all, I had only heard PMU when I bought I&W. I had no idea that they were capable of songs like WFS, "Surrounded," " LSOAD," "HY," "AL," or "TAMP" at the time. It was a pleasant surprise, to say the least. Any comments?

    Hi all

sounds like the concerts in the States are going really well and are also a lot of fun for both the band and the fans. Could it be that this increased 'fun factor' is due to Derek now being a fully integrated and accepted member of the band? The first time I saw the band (on the Images And Words tour), everybody - with the possible exception of Mike - was very serious, and most of the fans were apparently music theory students who just stood there with open mouths, drooling but not smiling. The next time I saw the boys was the Awake tour, where Derek was tucked away in the corner of the stage, playing music that he hadn't written. Then came the big change when they did the European shows in early 97. People started smiling and laughing, both on the stage and in front of it. And now the current tour - Derek dressed up like a 70s dog's dinner, over-the-top stage accessories (lava lamps, TVs, shaggy carpets), and suddenly lots of fun for everybody, drum stick juggling, instruments are exchanged, Nicky Lemons is born and dies, great cover songs AND some of the best Dream Theatre performances ever. Anybody else think like this?

    Hi all

sorry about posting twice in one day, but I just heard of an album that I think I should know more about. The band in question is Floater and the album is called 'Angels In The Flesh And Devils In The Bone'. It is described as "if Pink Floyd crashed headlong into Tool, it would sound a lot like this", which sounds weird enough for me to want to check it out. Any information from anybody, especially from Oregon jammers (where Floater seem to come from). All information gratefully received.

Get "Passion and Warfare",it's THE Steve Vai album.I think he really hasn't made another album as good as that. The latest,"Fire Garden", is also great, but doesn't quite match up with "Passion and Warfare". If youd like to hear "the next DT singer",then you should get "Sex and Religion",altough I think this is the worst album Vai has made:) 3. I've been inspired :-) by LaBrie's Vanden Plas shirt (he's wearing it in the Motown show pics I had developed today) to check them out. Could someone tell me what they're like, and which CD to start with?

Well,I think I read somewhere that altough they've been around for quite a long time, they've only made two albums so far.I haven't heard their first one,but I bought "The God Thing" about month ago. It's pretty good, but I don't like their singer that much. He's not bad, he just has a weird voice. Can't really describe it.They have nice songs, most of them, after all. They're not as technical as DT,but not sloppy either.I don't know why,but they do bore me a bit...On a scale of 4-10,I'd give it 8...

I haven't heard QR,so I won't say anything about them.I've been thinking of getting Operation:Mindcrime. Is it any good? Timo Tolkki from Stratovarius listed O:M in his top ten albums in a Finnish music magazine,so I guess it is...Comments?

<< what songs should DT play while they're opening for ELP and Deep Purple? >>

This can be a very interesting thread. Well right away I can't imagine DT NOT playing - Voices, Lines in the Sand, and Metropolis. To me each of those songs represents the BEST of each of the respective albums. They all have the necessary highs and lows.

Songs to avoid - TAMP, HY, TSM - if you are gonna play a ballad - play Another Day or Space Dye Vest (but I doubt SDV is a reality)

okay here it goes start off with the intro to Mirror actually go up to the verse and the double time part after the verse repeat the verse again (cuz I love the drums on the second verse) and then at the end of the second verse Take the Time that should account for about 15 minutes (I ain't gonna time it)

Funny that you started this thread since I was planning on starting it myself :) Hmmm......well, I don't think that they should necessarily concentrate on more softer songs because of that audience. Now we're all hoping DT gains many new fans from this tour, but I for one think any converted DT fans should become DT fans due to their being exposed to an honest, well-rounded cross-section of DT's music. I don't think they should "over-promote" the softer songs, just like I don't think they should play nothing but heavy songs or nothing but proggy songs. Mix it all up, keep it somewhat even. "This is what Dream Theater entails, take it or leave it." Agreed about PMU. Burning My Soul should be in there too, as well as Hollow Years. *At least* one prog-fest song, whether it be Lines in the Sand or something older. Perfect Strangers by Nightmare Cinema? :) I don't know, maybe I'll sit down and come up with my "perfect setlist" so to speak, if I have time. I just think it would be quite low-class of DT to try to "sell" themselves to another audience by underplaying *any* aspect of their music. Keep it honest; if they want to like DT, they can like DT for what DT really is, like all of us do. Heck, I really think they should just play ACOS and Metropolis 2; there's your freakin' hour. :)

OK, nice thread to start. Here's my offering with a blow-by-blow explanation on why they were selected.

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Medley (Met, LtL, ACOS). I remember my first DT show when they started with Metropolis. Simply fucking amazing. Really grabbed me by the bajnoobies. Since this will probably be the first go-around for many in the audience, why not ?? And, since the middle of Metropolis may not go over well with some, why not do the medley that they have been doing this tour ?? I know, I *hate* medleys (sorry MP), but WTF ?? Great opener that ends with a climax.

Puppies/TtT/Freebird. Someone said that "They'll be opening before an audience that will likely be older and a bit less "metal" than us freaks at a regular headlining show." I dont agree. Your elders can rock your cradle !! Crank it up with Puppies, play TtT and end with an excerpt of a song that many in "that generation" can identify with. Will help the audience connect with the band.

Lines in the Sand. Why ?? Because it would change moods a bit (at least at the beginning). And, it's arguably the best song that they have ever written.

Surrounded. I dont really know why, but I think that it would fit. A little more mainstream than the other songs.

Peruvian Skies. Another new song with multiple moods. And it segues well into PMU.

Pull Me Under. They're (hehehehe) signature song. And despite the fact that they have to play it at every show that they will ever play, I still dont mind hearing it. I just hope that James doesn't continue to let the audience sing the chorus. It may not work in this setting.

SUMMARY. About 60 minutes, give or take. Elements that will allow a relatively new audience to connect with the band. I know. Basically blowing off WDADU and Awake completely but in 60 minutes you have to cut corners.

The big question that I have is that since they are scarce on time, what will become of the traditional beginning of Rooster/Clockworks ?? I bet that it *has* to go. It just wont be the same.

    Later, Mark Metzger mmetzger@comversens.com

PS - Smart money says that they wont cover Perfect Strangers ..... ;)

    > "Surrounded"? Schweeeet, but there are those quieter parts that would > just beg some idiot drunk to start yelling at Our Guys.

I don’t know…DT shouldn’t be tailoring their set list to rowdy drunks. I think anything DT plays would be rather well received. The sheer musicianship is gonna blow people away, especially if they can keep up the standards of this tour. I haven’t read a single post in recent weeks where someone said this wasn’t the best DT has ever sounded.

Hell, we’re talking about ELP fans here. It’s not like DT is opening for Blind Melon.

One side note about heckling…the only DT opening act I ever saw that didn’t deserve a little heckling was Echolyn. Even if you didn’t like the music, at least it had a distinctive style and was SOLID. Big Wreck was the absolute worst opener I ever saw. The only thing that made it bearable to me was the guy in the corner screaming, “YOU SUCK!”

I'd think an ELP fan would be happy to see an opening act like Dream Theater, a relatively young band that still cares about making great music and not just coppin’ a ‘tude.

So what do I think they'll play? Lines in the Sand seems like an obvious choice, for one. And JP HAS to play Flight of the Bumblebee at every concert he ever does for the rest of his life and beyond--because if I never see that again, I'll be devastated.

My two cents this has been. KK
