Someone mentioned that DT would play about an hour set. That would be cool.
I have seen ELP shows twice and they do not put on long shows. Last time
they played only 1:30 or not less than 2 hours as a headliner with no
opening act. But all of them were really into the music though especially
Keith Emerson. ELP always opened with "welcome back my friend to the show
that's never end...".
I would think that this show would be a really long show.

Hello everyone, it's Babs. Just wanted to put in my $.02 about being
short. I'm 4'11" (yes, the shortest 'jammer on the list). In my
pre-childbearing years I used to be light enough that I could sit on
someone's shoulders during a show. Oh well, "those days are forever,
stripped like leaf on a tree...."
PS It sucks being short, last week while grocery shopping I had to ask
someone to help me grab something from a top shelf. I'll end this before
Skadz jumps on me for no DT content.

hi all ...
due to some server software problems, the freaks and ytsejam
mailing lists were down for about 48 hours between Wednesday and
Friday. Things have been fixed now and everything seems to be running
smoothly (though slowly) as the mailing list server catches up. Sorry for
the inconvience.

I thought the SF show was great, but the people sucked. I and my 3 friends were up front on JP's side with our banner ready to show off. Well as the show went on some druck guy muscled his way up and to the right of us, and later this guy musceld his way in front to get his girlfriend in too. The two combined pushed 3 of us out from the front and 2 "rows" farther back. Only one of my friends was left in front to gaurd the unfurrled banner. Then as they finished off the set, before the encore my friend started grabbing the banner up to throw it to Mike (cause he was asking for banners for his studio) and then this guy farther over starts grabbing it tto, getting into a tug of war with my friend and almost tearing it. Well I all of us were a bit peeved and shouted our fair share of obsecenities at the guy and told him what was up and he let us have it. Suffice to say, by the end of the show we agreed that that people had really pissed us off.
What we figured was that there were just alot of new people there who really didn't know the protocol. They didn't know that this wasn't your normal metal show where you mosh and push people around to show how much bigger and stupider you are. But, whatever. We all thought the show was better than the Palo Alto one and had a good time. Plus we gave the banner to Mike, and one of my friends got to meet the guys, in particular his idol (Mike) and he actually spoke (yes spoke) to Myung.
Take the time...

Hello, it's Babs again. Yes, it's a Friday before a long weekend and I'm just killing time before going home. I think I've posted more today than I have all year (giggle). I wanted to put in my opinion on this:
> SEBASTIAN BACH (I don't know if he is still in SKID ROW or if the band is now >defunct.) I've thought of this ever since I saw him on DT's LIVE AT THE >MARQUEE video, sitting around with James Labrie and parodying TAKE THE >TIME, "...somethin' that I FEE-YULLLL, somethin' that is REE-YULLLLL!" and >doing that old Elvis lip trick. Jammers with the video will know what I'm >talking about here.
He could probably do it range-wise, but just think of this guys personality - he's spastic! I can't picture him fitting in well with the rest of DT. I mean can you imagine having to concentrate on playing guitar while he's carrying on? I think he'd be a huge distraction to the music.
Ok, let the flames begin...

If non of these places have any information, then mail ME <skadz@dreamt.org> NOT NOT NOT the jam!!! It wastes space and when the jam does come back up (if it was down) it ends up taking longer to process through all the waiting posts.
Thanks! Skadz

<<Now you were being silly. Deciding you didn't like the band because of what some of their fans do. The music stays the same. I bet you think Zappa sucks because of all the stuff Zappa fans do. I bet you think The Helsinki Concert sucked because Frank named his kids Dweezil and Moon Unit.
I bet you think the polyrhythmic intro to It's Ice is lame ass shit because Phish concert people are a bunch of lame ass hippies.
I bet you think Metropolis Part I is boring because DT concert people are a bunch of idiot moshers and black t-shirt wearing heavy metal fans.
(personally, my Phish concert was cool because it was outside...which gives you some space...unlike tiny clubs... I was also able to see Living Colour, that's a metal concert, with no crushing or broken bones.) >>
Ok, what I said may have come off that way, but it wasn't ONLY that. I was getting into other stuff like Rush and Dream Theater, and Phish really didn't fit in with them. The seemed too Greatful Deadish to me and I wasnt really into their sound anymore. And yes, I didn't like standing around with a bunch of pot-dazed hippies, but the concert was BORING! The difference between if Phish does a 20 minute song and Dream Theater or any other prog band does one, is that Phish just jams! Thats it! No changes, just Trey doing his cliking noises with the wah-wah. With DT, you have time changes, tempo changes, melody changes. You could take a section from all 7 parts of ACOS and play them for someone, they would think its 7 different songs. Thats really why I stoped liking them, because they were boring to me now, it just took seeing them live to get it drilled into my thick skull.
BTW I think Metropolis part 1 is one of the most technically insane songs I've ever heard, and its one of my (if not my) favorite Dream Theater song. I don't hate DT cause some of their crowd moshes, because with DT (as I see it) you have three types of fans: the prog fans the metal fans and the fans who are into both I, personally, am one of the prog fans, and there are a bunch at the DT shows. If all of DT's fans were crazed metal heads, sure it might have an effect on how much I like the band, but they aren't so I don't care.

Ytsedate, 5/20/98 12:30pm- Weather conditions: @ 80 degrees F, Cloudier than Mr. Magoo's eyesight After rushing to summer class on 5 hours of sleep and rushing back home to get the proper equipment for the evening's festivities, Eckie impatiently awaits Vince's Ford Conversion Van from Hell to pull up. We head out to Tempe stocked with two guitars, a silver paint pen, a box of art supplies and a roll of paper for banner-making activities. We finally make it out to Tempe, pick up Uncle Dave, and hit the grocery store for tailgate party food and DT-memorabilia money....
1:30pm-3:30pm So it's Eckie, Uncle Dave, Vinnie, and Ed Voras starting off the festivities, along with another dude (sorry, i forgot your name, and I don't even know if you're a ytsejammer or not... *shrug* heheheh) listening to progmetal, and making banners. Okay, we only came up with two good ideas (three actually, but that one was ruined by the wind): The first banner was a welcome message to the band, "Welcome to Sunny Arizona" (the joke was that it was one of the cloudiest days of the year that day) and the second simply said, in black ink, "Hey James...What the fuck?!" with two stick figures below, one with short hair and a mustache (and an arrow pointing to it saying "bad") and another with long hair and a mean grimace ("Good").
So this thing was plastered against the side of Vince's van when the man himself, John Petrucci arrives to the club real early in the hotel shuttle, he sees the sign, and the crazy group of kids jumping and screaming "HEY JOHN! YOU RULE MAN!" he gets this odd look of fear in his eyes, waves, turns around, and hauls ass into the club. Then we realized that we left that sign on Vince's van...for the purpose of hte ink drying w/o the banner flying off in the wind.... So we quickly switched the banners and put up the WELCOME TO SUNNY AZ poster in its place.
@5:00pm-6:30pm So another 1.5 hours passes from that incident to the time the rest of the band showed up in their big ass red bus. When the bus drives by I happened to unfold the "HEY JAMES" poster and flash it at them... ..so the first thing James says after hopping out of the bus with something in one of his hands (I swear it was an electric razor), "Okay, where's that poster? I saw 'Hey James...What the Fuck?!' and didn't catch the rest!" I popped up out of the crowd with the poster in hand, nearly pissing myself with an odd mixture of fear and laughter, James reads it and points at his cleanly shaven face and says to me, "Well, look at this! Eh?!" NO MORE MUSTACHE! We all cheered and he started signing autographs...Derek walked by as the poster was rolled out before James and the rest of the band (looking at it through the windows) and laughed his ass off before entering the club.
So then James went off for 20 minutes on how he uses his entire skull to resonate his voice to the extreme levels of power that'd he'd later use to blast out my right ear drum that evening. Derek was a really cool cat...the first thing he said after jumping out of the bus was, "Welcome to Sunny Arizona huh? I love it!" And his clothes were really cool. Different, but they looked damn good, the boy's got style.
John Myung was hauling around some of his own equipment, it looked a little ackward seeing one of the most talented bass players to ever pick up the instrument in the most talented band...without a roadie. But we got pictures and autographs from James, John Myung, and Derek before they went in for sound check. The night was already awesome, and I hadn't even heard them play yet.

Yes, the Club Rio show rocked. A few minor quibbles with the set list (UaGM instead of TtT, not playing 2 of my 3 favorite FII songs (HK and NM)) but the performance was fucking tight. Second best DT experience, behind only the Amsterdam show in 97, and that's mainly a set list comparison. Hearing the non-album tracks during the intermission rocked, particularly RtK. Which leads me into quotes of the day: 1. That's Derek. The new keyboardist. 2. LaBrie. He's the... singer? 3. What band is that? Liquid tension what? (ok, that's me being a jam elitest) 4. They played power windows before Fullin the mouth played, then while playing the dt demos, my friend overheard "are they still playing rush?"
even though mike thought they were too loud, i was standing five feet from the speakers, and i would have to blame it on the shit acoustics of club rio. i remember them being louder in europe last year without any of that nasty echo thing that was going around.
as for my main point... after the show 30 people or so were waiting for the band. eckie was asking if johnny could come out and play. another guy was calling for john and mike, and so on. james was the first out (eventually) and after like 5 minutes, he asked "what, is that it?" so people reconverged. then JP came out, and the mob ensued. same for mike a little later. i think everyone left derek alone because of the two blonds. i thought about going over to talk to him, but i didn't want to get in the way. a couple minutes later, while mike is still holding court, i see john myung just kind of standing around. and it's not the first time i've seen this happen. it happened in amsterdam, and i had like a 5 minute conversation with him, i found out who the producer for FII would be, and so on. so i go over to talk to him, and not wanting to sound like the normal fanboy, i open with something along the lines of how he seems to fade into the background. i never said the "I" word, thank God, but i'm sure it could easily have been inferred. i mean, honestly, there is no one else around, i can ask him anything, and i comment on how basically he doesn't receive the same attention as the other guys. what kind of fucking moron insults the bassist of his favorite band. this kind of fucking moron, i tells ya! bafu may have to transfer that trademark of Fucking Idiot (TM) to me. i think i've earned it. how does something like this happen???
