Everytime someone asks what Vai cd to buy, I make a list, every one of his
cd's has been different from the other, here we go....

Flexable-(If you can find it), is VERY Zappa-esque, pretty werid, not really
something you'd want to get if you want some really great guitar stuff, its
    more zany and insane.

Passion And Warfare-Some say its his best ever and no guitar album will ever
be able to top it. Its simply amazing. I've never heard such great guitar
sounds in my life. Its fairly shred happy, some songs comical. Overall its an
extremely hard cd to play straight through with your guitar and get every riff
down the right way. Its very layered, very deep, there's a lot going on. All
    instrumental, with some blurbs.

Sex And Relgion-Some say its the worst he's ever recorded. Mainly because of
Devin Townsend's vocals, it was placing highly talented musicians in a group
and making them sound mediocre. Great guitar lines, worth buying just for the
last song, "Rescue Me Or Bury Me".

Alien Love Secrets-My personal favorite. Only 7 songs, but each one is simply
amazing. No overdubs except one song, "Kill The Guy With The Ball", which he
doubled the rythm guitar and that was it. This cd mixes the craziness of
Flexable, dramatacies of Passion and Warfare, and the beautiful guitar work of
Sex and Relgion and P&W mixed together.

Fire Garden-In a word-Amazing. Steve steps up as lead vocalist for all the
vocal songs, ( 6 vocal songs, 7 including "When I was A Little Boy" hehe). 18
songs, very melody orientated. This is more down to earth, easy to swallow
    typa record.

There it is for Vai cd's. For Ryche cd's, I think Operation:Mindcrime is
fairly progressive sounding. The vocals are amazing, as always with Geoff.

Ok, Devin Townsend, man, am I long winded or something? I cant shut
up today. Devin is an outstanding vocalist, though some may disagree. He more
of screems to hit those high notes, and it takes a while to get used to. It
can be annoying and just plain noisy, but its good for what he does. I dont
think he'd sound too good in DT unless they were playing stuff that was
constantly based aruond "Burning My Soul" all the time.
It'd be different. Ok, my fingers are tired, time to play
    some more guitar. See ya

    2 questions here:

    1) anyone know where i can find the steve vai 10 hour workout? it was
published in one of the guitar magazines back in 1990, and i'm hoping that
someone might still have them or know someone who might have them up on a
webpage or something. ANY help would be appreciated.

    2) richard warren, are you still out there? i've been looking for you, and
know not where you are. if you get this (or if you're not him, but know where
to find him), please email me.

I'm kind of hoping this happens too. I always think it shows a nice
"mutual respect" thing when things like this happen. The ultimate would
be to have like a Prog G3 thing happening where ALL the members of ALL
the bands come out to play a couple cover tunes at the end. :)

    > My idea would be to have them just be themselves. There's no reason for

That's why I say, put a few long songs in the set. They're not exactly
opening up for a mainstream act, now are they? It's not like DP fans
haven't heard a few long songs in their day(s). :) I think DT is a goo
opening act for DP, so there's no reason for them to have to be
something they're not. Play the prog - I bet they don't scare anyone
    away.

That statement pretty much wraps it up. The only way I could picture DT without James would be without a vocalist, period. If not James then all-instrumental.

I agree totally. Derek definitely has had an impact on their stage presence and overall relaxed, fun attitude on tour.

You have to add the fact that the band has been together for long time now (save Derek), and it's just a matter of tour experience, etc. as well.

    Hi Jammerz -

I don't know if anyone responded to this yet, but yes, it is a professionally recorded video of an entire performance of "A Pleasant Shade Of Gray" along with some conceptual stuff. It was released by Metal Blade, and it's excellent! I had a hard time finding it, but it IS out there. Keep an eye out - it rules! I hope this helps.

Now then... thank god that the New Singer thread has slowed. That was annoying as shit. Anyway, I think this new thread is a great one, so here goes:

I agree that TTT should NOT be included due to the "audience participation singing the chorus" reason someone gave before. As much as I think it would be great to play it with the Freebird ending to give the fans something to remember and relate to, I don't know if James has EVER sang the chorus live. (Has it happened and I just don't know about it?) It would be a difficult chorus to hit night in and night out, I think. As far as the vibe of what to play, I think that the band may want to shy away from the "ballad" type stuff, with the exception of maybe TSM electric. Deep Purple (from what I've heard) is primarily into groove-based songs, and ELP (from what I've heard) is into the proggy stuff. DT may want to stick to those styles to cater to the other bands' fans.

Anyway, this is what I've come up with so far for a set list: ACOS 1 & 2 JLMB Peruvian Skies LITS PMU Metropolis LTL ACOS 7

I know it's not perfect because I've ignored Awake entirely. I think Lie would fit nicely, but at what expense? I also like BMS and maybe HK before LITS. Damn, there just isn't enough time! :-)

But, I think that my set list combines the groove "ballz and chunk" tunes with the proggy ones pretty well. Keep the suggestions coming, this is cool!

You must not have been around very long. Neil Gallop is a longtime member of the list and he knows what the fuck he's talking about. The misspelling was probably for one of these reasons:

    1) it was intentional to see how many people he could get a rise out of 2) it was accidental because he hasn't had enough sleep 3) he was being a weird Brit again

'Fess up, Neil. Which one? :)

Hi everyone, I'm one of them new Falling Into Infinity fans who totally, completely fell in love with DT without listening to any of their other albums. I signed onto this mailing list a couple weeks ago, and at that time, everyone was talking about DT selling out. Well, today, I went out and got Images and Words......and what the hell? I'm sorry to say this to all the long-time DT fans, but I personally think that DT is better now than they were back in '92. All that moaning about DT selling out is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard, unless "selling out" actually means growing as musicians. I'm not saying that I didn't like I&M; but the fact is, they're jamming a lot harder now. Sorry if this subject's a bit out-dated. Oh well.
