It was on 5/26/98 10:32 PM that Alex Smith said:

    >now now y'all, rush sold out after /signals/ with /grace under pressure/. i
    >still think /signals/ is classic Rush, but after that they lost their edge.
    >i will admit sigs was a new direction for the band, but I LOVE it!

<sarcasm> Ugh. Oh yeah, Rush really sold out after Signals. </sarcasm>

Moving Pictures had a hit in "Tom Sawyer." "Subdivisions" and "New World
Man" off of Signals both received and continue to receive airplay on
classic rock stations. To this day, I haven't heard a single track off of
Grace Under Pressure on the radio. Maybe I don't listen to the right
radio stations. :) You might not like the direction that Rush took after
Signals, but it sure wasn't selling out. For the record, I love
everything Rush has ever done, and don't consider any of it "selling
    out."

I apologize, and desperately hope that this does not begin another
    "sell-out" thread on the jam.

Man, I just wanted to say thanks to the DTIFC for the birthday card
and pin I got in the mail today. It even arrived a few days early
(my B-Day is Sat.). Definitely a pleasant surprise :).
I've been listening to a lot of Phish lately, and one thing that
really impresses me about them is that they'll do anything. I've
heard them do covers of Whipping Post, Highway to Hell, and even a
version of MmmBop in the style of James Brown (fuckin' hilarious :).
I even plan on seeing them in St. Louis in July (and hopefully won't
run into too many morons :).

Apples. Oranges. DT's version of "Perfect Strangers" (not the Nightmare
Cinema one, mind you) sounds pretty damn close to exact, singer not
included. DT has a knack for right-on covering, y'see. Listen to their
cover of "Heart of the Sunrise" and tell me JP doesn't sound like Howe. Go
on, do it! Bring it on!

    Also, Big Wreck rules.

It seems like everybody's doing sequel-songs these days. Everybody but

How 'tasteful' his vocals are arranged is a matter opinion - you state
it like fact. IMHO, the way Matos' vocals are arranged over songs like
Never Understand, Queen Of The Night and The Shaman are absolutely
superb. It wasn't until I actually sat down with the lyrics to both AC
and HL and read along with them to the music that I realised how clever
    Matos' vocal arrangements were.

    That is, IMHO, of course...

Another vocalist no one seems to have mentioned yet; Russel Allen, from
Symphony X. He's my fav vocalist and first pick if KJLB ever needed to
be replaced. He's got both power and range as demonstrated in the 20
    minute DWoT.

Wow, everyone take a chill pill. Nobody ever said "Let's replace KJLB".
They just said "If KJLB happed to get crushed under the hooves of a
massive caribou stampede, who do you think could sing for DT?"

Also, while picking a set list for DT to open for DP/ELP may be fun,
it's not like they're going to let us decide.

    Boy, am I a pooper.

Well, since we now have nothing to talk about, I'll list the
dissapointments of the LA shows. (Like there could really
    be any)
    1. No Nicky Lemmons
    2. No Nightmare Cinema
    3. No drumstick/banana throwing
I have concluded that since all of these things involve Derek,
we should fire him and replace him with one of those cute
    little Hanson boys.
    I'm done,
    Trevor
p.s. Anyone know what those "=20" things are in my posts?

    Hey all

I just wanted to say that DT rocked at the Maritime hall in SF last week.

Now that that is out of the way, I think the setlist should be as follows

    1. Metropolis
    2. Lifting Shadows
    3. Burning My Soul
    4. Surrounded
    5. 6:00
    6. PMU

Maybe replace BMS with Anna Lee to get a ballad in there. I think you have
a good mix of serious progressiveness (Metropolis), a few semi mello tunes
(LSOAD and S) and a few heavier tunes. Any comments?

    I would have to agree with K I L L M A R Y about Andre Matos. He is one
awesome singer. I still like Timo Kotipelto better but that is my opinion.
Angra rox, any word on a new disc?

No way, Emerson was very dismissive of the mellotron and I recall
reading an interview with him (back in '74) when he said that he did not
consider the Mellotron a 'proper instrument' and refused to play one. He
did however co-operate heavily with Bob Moog in the development of
the synthesiser and was the first person to play a polyphonic machine
(on Brain Salad Surgury). I must say that I was very disappointed to hear
a few months ago, that Bob Moog was now more interested in making
theramins than developing synthesisers, which is a real shame.

(Note: Bob Moog was in town to open the 'Synthesiser Museum' in
the basement of the 'Turnkey Systems' shop on Tottenham Court Road,
which may be a place worth visiting by UK jammers or other visitors to

    Hi all

I've got lots of work to do at the moment and shouldn't really be doing this,
but I'm posting a review of an album that is so unusual and so good that
I'll take a few minutes of my employers time. If any of you already have this
album, let me know what you think.

    MISANTHROPE - Visionnaire

This album by the French group Misanthrope was recommended to me by
my friendly CD dealer last week when I dropped by for a couple of beers
(good service, eh?) and to listen to some new stuff. I've never heard such a
range of musical styles on one album before, yet it sounds and feels like
just one new style. The nearest I can come to describing it is progressive
black doom metal (bit of an imagination stretcher, I know). The whole album
is very tight, even the fast passages, which are sometimes brutally fast.
The excellent mix lets you hear all of the instruments clearly. An album
full of complex rhythm changes and surprising style changes - you never
know how a song is going to develop, with acoustic guitar passages in the
middle of double bass explosions and jazz/crossover interludes breaking
up prog/metal riffing. Extremely bizarre stuff. You could even be forgiven
thinking that the intro to the track '2666' was Dream Theatre until the
cookie monster bursts in. This is an album with more layers than a
submarine sandwich - don't expect to hear everything straight away. This
is one that has to be listened to rather than just heard. I can recommend this
to anybody who likes long songs (between 5 and 9 minutes) that are hard,
fast, dark, progressive, experimental and captivating. Nice artwork, too.
    Fully deserving of 9/10.

Jerry aus Muenchen: lebst Du noch? Lange nichts mehr von Dir gehoert.
    Und keine Eier.

    stay safe and happy listening

So, Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith were both at the LA gig. Why did I
miss this? Damn damn damn. Two of my once-favourite musicians together
with five of my now-favourite musicians. Damn.

When I was drunk on Friday night, I bumped into (literally) another drunken
DT fan. As it turns out, he used to know my little sister. Hmm. I've arranged
to buy him a pint at the DT show in London on June 23rd.

Earlier on Friday night, I went to see Tori Amos live. She was lovely, although
I was slightly disappointed that she didn't play Winter, China or Silent
All These Years. I thought it would have been really cool if Spock's Beard
could have opened. The Tori crowd would dig them. Instead, we got some
Irish guys called The Devlins, who were friendly and endearing but musically
    unimpressive.

The latest edition of the I&W fanzine is out, and it's as entertaining as
ever. More cool stuff about Mike's drumkit, and news about the Fan Club
    gig in Rotterdam . . .

Is it just British people who think that the past participle of "shit" is
"shat"? Whenever I hear an American say "I shit myself", my instinctive
response is "Quick, turn round and let me watch!"

the most recent use of the mellotron is on tori's new album. she even is credited for using a mellotron FLUTE. that's right. interesting sound, this mellotron flute. but if you listen to "iieee" on "from the choirgirl hotel", you'll get enough mellotron to make your mother happy.

i actually got an orgasmic thrill unlike those i get from my 2nd least expensive whore by enlightening the tori amos list with my mellotron sageness.

5 - DT should reward themselves from the TERRIBLE OPENING slot by quickly recording a new album and be out on the road headlining again no later than November :o) I'm only thinking of the band here :o) Oh, and release a damn Video while they are at it.

It took them over what? 2 years to release a new CD and you want them to make a new album? in what? 5 months? LOL!!! Yeah why dont they just make a re-mix Album where Trent Resnor or Puff Daddy Re-mix's their songs lol.. I aggree the biggest problem with DT is that they dont have exposure. And as this is good for the Current Fans. it's not good for the band that wants to be headlineing again.

    Hi,

Ville Paukkonen spoke of the December Forum gig in London, this was my first (and only) DT Live experience and I still get a buz thinking about it. If anyone in Jamland has a boot of this gig, I would be interested in getting hold of a copy. I don't trade in boots as I only have one, and to be honest I'm not a real boot fan - but this gig was somewhat special (Nghtmare Cinema and all). While we're talking of gigs (well I am anyway), any chance of DT getting to Alabama in the future?

Oh, and Alex Smith wondered about buying FII - what are you waiting for? - this CD is too cool - buy it now, go on - do it! And while you're there get everything else any member of DT may have even looked at just once (especially the live video, and Awake, and I&W and...oh, I'm just raving now - sorry).

    Cheers,

Dave (a UK jammer - now in Alabama).

I did the same thing you did, I had a couple, but I went out and bought them all...now I'm hooked. I don't think FII is anything close to sellout. It's DT, but they're older now, so their music is more mature...but it's still DT, that's for damn sure.

Hoboy. Okay, Matos takes a little getting used to (isn't that prog cliche #2345538?) but he isn't that bad. :) I do wish he wouldn't slide from note to note sometimes, or hit a note then pop up to a higher pitch briefly before returning to the previous note.

I remember thinking much the same thing when I listened to "Angels Cry" (there is a bit more shrieking than singing on that disc) but I really liked the music. "Holy Land" is even better; Matos' voice is even stronger and he apparently doesn't care so much about showing off his range.

Andre's voice isn't for everybody, but if you like high tenors that go above and beyond the Geoff Tate school, you'll probably like him just fine.

Alex S. remarked: > now now y'all, rush sold out after /signals/ with /grace under pressure/. i > still think /signals/ is classic Rush, but after that they lost their edge. > i will admit sigs was a new direction for the band, but I LOVE it!

Again with the "sold out" comments. If a band wants to play a certain style of music, what the fuck is wrong with them playing it that way?

Maybe I'm misinterpreting something here. From what I gather, "selling out" seems to mean writing for a specific audience and not listening to the musical voice within you. Yes?

In that case, Rush *did not* sell out after "Signals". They wrote and played what was in their heads and hearts. They wrote and played the music they wanted to play. So what if it was more commercially successful?

    Okay, end of rant.

Alex also inquired: > i'm a relative DT beginner: i have aCoS on CD and IaW on tape from a > friend--should I get IaW, Awake, or FII on CD next time I go music > shopping??? give me advice, because I might not be able to shell out 50 > bucks to buy all three as much as i'd like to... is FII worth it or is it > just sell out?

Being admittedly biased as a huge DT fan, I would say just get all three. But the choice is actually an easy one -- if you haven't gotten "Awake" yet, then you should pick that one up first, followed by FII, with I&W on CD coming last since you already have it.

    Ta, Phil
