I tried to tape the previous DT gig in Forum last December, unfortunately
    I didn't have a decent microphone back then :( Anyway, I wasn't searched
at the door at all (even though I was carrying a rucksack) and toilets
were large enough for setting up the equipment comfortably (even the locks
work!). I can't say much about the security during the show, except that I
    wasn't caught ;)

BTW, does anyone have a good tape of that show? A few days before the gig
somebody said somebody else was going to smuggle a video camera in; I
wonder how did that turn out?

    Of course I do ;)

On the other hand, if people want to have an intelligent discussion

Well - it is IMPOSSIBLE for everyone (let alone 2 people) to agree on a 1 hour
DT set list, but I think there are some things to consider here.

1 - Absolutely, positively NO EDITS. Don't shorten the song so they can play
more DT songs overall. The songs should be played complete. The only
difference should be the little extras and embellishments they have added
    through out the years

2 - Definitely ZERO Cover material. Not even Pink Floyd injected into
Peruvian Skies (no matter how cool it sounded, DT needs to represent DT) This
also includes Perfect Strangers (unless jammed WITH Deep Purple). While some
may view it as a tip of the hat, most DP fans will just think "Shit. They
fucked up our fucking band's song." Trust me. Turn the tables. What if Big
Wreck played Pull Me Under and through in their own style. Damn, you'd be
laughing your ass off. Maybe even disgusted. If they want do to any cover
material, they should do 4-8 bars at the very end of their set worked into the
closing song (so as to leave the impression on the ELP or DP fans)

3 - Don't tailor to metal or "light side" music. DT is a band of many moods -
    make sure that gets across.

4 - Take the Time SHOULD be played. Sure it will be hard on KJLB, but the
reason the audience sings along during the chorus is because it is a GREAT
CHORUS. So why keep a GREAT CHORUS out of the set list?

5 - DT should reward themselves from the TERRIBLE OPENING slot by quickly
recording a new album and be out on the road headlining again no later than
November :o) I'm only thinking of the band here :o) Oh, and release a damn
Video while they are at it.

I agree with Peter, QR is a great band, but I also think that they hit their
peak with Mindcrime. Mindcrime is probably one of my top 5 favorite
recordings. Also, if you get Mindcrime and like it you might want to look
around for the box set of Operation Livecrime. It's a great CD and concert
    video set.

Yup. I don't know WHO exactly invented the mellotron, but Keith;s
main sound was a Hammond Organ and a MiniMoog synth. In fact,
I really can't remember Kieth playing a mellotron ever (if any of you
know otherwise, please correct me). All I know is the three main
mellotron users were: The Moody Blues, Genesis, and King Crimson.
BTW, in case you are wondering, Mellotrons are hardly used anymore
as they are out of date (technologically). I know Robert Fripp uses one
still, and so does the Genesis tribute band The Musical Box.

I believe it was the moog that Emerson helped to invent. But I could be
    misinformed.

The mellotron machine itself may be out of date, but the sound, as
reproduced by synthesizers, is very prominent still, being used by bands
such as Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, etc... I'm not sure if it's an
actual mellotron being used or a synth emulating its sound. If you go to
<http://www.mellotron.com/mellolis.html> you can see some of the
recordings featuring the mellotron. I was quite surprised with some of
them. :) (Alice Cooper? Aerosmith? Smashing Pumpkins?)

With many choices, what seems to be most likly is a set that will get people (sort of a last ditch effort) out to the stores to buy the cd. Granten Dream Theater will be on EastWest for at least one more album, but sales of Falling into Infinity didn't do all the label would have hoped. So here's my thought---- ACOS 1 & 2 BMS JLMB Mirror/Lie Lines in the Sand Metropolis/LTL/ACOS 7 *or* Pull Me Under You have to think they still will focus on the new album. I would be nice though to see something like New Mellinum (I can't see that stick enough), it kind of sucked that they didn't play that at the Philly show a couple of weeks ago. But I guess I saw it twice already, so I shouldn't complain. Trial of Tears would be great to see again too, but I think they are saving that and Voices for a Dream Theater crowd, more intense songs.

Not really. The original bands who used the mellotron are the Beatles, the Moody Blues, King Crimson and Univers Zero.

Description: magnatic tape playback instrument, based on instruments by american Harry Chamberlin, designed and built by three British brothers, Leslie, frank and Norman Bradley.

    Mark I (1963-1964) made only 10 machines Mark II (1964-1967) made 650 machines Model 300 (1968-1970) made 160 machines Mellotron/Novatron Model 400 (1970-1980) made 1,850 machines Novatron Mark V (1976-1981) only 9 machines Mellotron U.S.A Ltd. 4 track (1980-1983) only 4 machines Novatron Model T.550 (1976-1978) only 7 machines

All the manufacturer are out of business now. The prices are from $1,500-5,000. The tapes are from $25-$500.

If anyone is interested ot know more, you can find the info from the book called "Vintage Synthesizers" by Mark Vail. Mark Vail also has another book out on the Hammond organ. Or if anyone wants just the info of Mellotron, I can photocopy the mellotron section and send it to you via the snail mail. It is pretty long to type in the jam.

The Mellotron that Spock's Beard used at the Progfest'97 is Model 400 owned by Greg Walker (Syn-Phonic). King Crimson used Mark II and Model 400.

I heard that there is a cd sample of mellotron plays back samples out in the market now. If you care try to find it.

What makes a buch of you think could Labrie could not pull of Take the Time? I think he could do it consistantly for the month-long stint opening up for Deep Purple.

Reason number one- he's done it in the past on the Images and Words tour, and he has improved on singing live since then.

Reason number two- his voice won't be as tired night in and night out. DT will be playing one hour MAXIMUM! More like 45 minutes. Labrie's voice has held up since October (when the FII tour began) doing two-hour plus shows. I'm willing to bet his voice will be perfect, as it has everytime I've seen him sing two-hour plus sets, on DT's 45-minute sets.

Here's some of my own little experiences that made this show extra cool: first off, I'VE PLAYED ON THE SAME STAGE AS DT!!! (even if it wasn't at the same time) my band, room 213 (no relation to Dahmer or the Shining), played at the bluebonnet a few months ago. I got DS, MP, and JP to sign my Hollow Years single. my friends and I were really close to the front of the line, so we were able to get in the front row (my stomach is bruised from the railing) as for the newest Fox reality show, When Portnoy Attacks!, my friend got a big glob of salad dressing right in her hair During BMS, MP pointed right at me during the chorus when I did the "Burning My Soul!" talk box part. that was damn cool. I'm reeeeaaaaal pissed at this one asshole, though. I talked to mike before the show, because I wanted him to do the drum duet with my other friend Ty who is a badass drummer (he could be as good as portnoy in a few years), and he told us where to stand, and he would look out for my friend. Ty was right in front of the riser, and when MP brought out the tom and sticks, he looked right at Ty and was handing the sticks to him (THANKS FOR TRYING, MIKE :-), and this tall asshole reached way over and wrestled the sticks out of everyones hands (that's when Mike made the comment about seven year olds). this guy also grabbed the mic three times when JLB passed it over the audience, and he crushed us in the front row when we were already tightly packed. other than that guy, the show was absolutly amazing. I really dug Full on the Mouth. the guitarist had a thick, ballzy tone that made it all good. OFB was incredible! i nearly died when they went into LTL (my all time fav. DT song) and JP was about two feet away from me during Flight of the Bumble Bee, and that was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. Nightmare Cinema was so damn cool. I can't think of a concert that i've laughed so much at: flying Deli tray, Calvin Klein boys, derek dropping the guitar in nightmare cinema, and dropping drumsticks during lie, James dragging Petrucci off stage, etc. this was, without a doubt, one of the best concerts I have ever been to (even better than Rush and Floyd).
