whoops, i sit corrected.
you're right. it was mr. townsend that had the pain-induced vocals
during that particular song. now that i think back on it, sebastian
bach wasn't so bad in the tribute album. however, he doesn't have =
quite
the style range that LaBrie would have in any given situation. it's
amazing what opera training will do for someone's voice.
of course there are probably people around who were die-hard fans at =
the
time of charlie's parting from the band. i wonder what they thought
about the group finding a new vocalist at the time. *shrug*
again i state that i can't see anyone trying to fill the shoes of the
man, the mystery, the musical machine Kevin James LaBrie. it just =
can't
be done. at least, not properly. (:

I think it would rock if DT let the fans chose the setlist for a few of
their shows over the net. Other bands have done that and it hasn't hurt them
to say the least :-)
My 45-minute show would be:
1) Just Let Me Breathe (5 1/2)
2) Status Seeker (4 1/2)
3) Under a Glass Moon (7)
4) Ytse jam (6)
5) Lifting Shadows off a Dream (6)
6) Monument Part 1 (10)
7) Lie (6)
I rounded a bunch of songs up in time so there should be no problem if Lie
goes to a bit over 6 minutes... and this covers every record they've ever done.
I personally think JLMB appeals to Deep Purple fans. Songs like Status
Seeker, Ytsejam and Lie will get the crowd jumping. UAGM and Monument
provide the necessary prog content, and LSOAD will provide a nice break so
the grandpas (you know they'll be there to see Deep Purple) don't have a
heart attack.

I agree with not blowing the crowd away with balls 'n chunk. The problem is,
does the band want to risk creating a false impression with the crowd? One
possible scenario: They play a set that appeals to the less-rocking crowd. A
good portion of those that were previously unfamiliar with OFB decides to go
out and buy an album now. Then, they're going to feel cheated when it turns
out that the band is a METAL band. Loss of a potential fan.
Back a few years ago, I thought Echolyn was a horrible opening act for DT.
Granted, I was in the minority in not liking them, but it didn't hurt the
band's popularity much (at least not in the circles I travel in).
Conversely, I loved the band Shadowplay, but other than a free demo tape I
grabbed that night, I never heard from them again.
They're not going to get anywhere by pretending to be something they're not
live. Let's face it - if the promoters had wanted a Top-40 band opening up,
they would have got one. They didn't. They wanted DT to open, so why not
give it to them?
Realistically, this isn't going to be a make-or-break tour for DT. It's a
couple of dates playing in bigger venues to more fans with better-known
bands. That's all. The potential is there for them to make new fans, but I
think they should target the people who like DT music, rather than those
that prefer DP/ELP. Granted, that's going to be a much smaller core at these
shows, but I bet the success rate will be better.

Katie isn't really anitsocial. She's actually very shy, and doesn't like
loud noises, which explains why she was hiding under the bed while Carol
was shouting "Let's Get Ready To Ruuummmmbbbbblllleeee!!!" She came out of
the bedroom later that night, after cautiously checking to see if the house
had been cleared.
I want to take the time to thank everyone that showed up at our house
before the DT show here in SF. Thanks to Lisa Marie, MattB, Carol, Pam,
Ryan, Nicole, Neil, Paul, Sean, Chris, Chris and Stefan, and anyone else
who I forgot to mention. We had a great time, and it was fun being able to
have an intelligent conversation about music for a change (no one else we
know has the same musical tastes as we do). We should get together more
often. Jasper (one of the cats) had a great time, since he got plenty of
attention. The party broke up just as our out of town guests arrived, so no
one got a chance to frighten them. But that's OK, since we took them over
to Berkeley the next day, and they got to see naked people wandering the
streets. They were more amazed (and confounded) at the kid wearing a
cardboard doghouse accompaning the naked people, than the naked people
themselves.

For a non-DT crowd setlist, I would relate this to my own experience
trying to convert "normal" listeners to DT. Most of us on the jam are
either musicians or hard-core music listeners. We're just not normal!
My choices, not in any order (even though some are not possible, for
obvious reasons):
1. PMU - Can't go wrong. Many people can enjoy on the first listen
(Personally, I'd rather not see it live anymore).
2. Wait for Sleep - OK, it ain't gonna happen. But this has worked
best for me when converting your average Joe.
3. Space-Dye Vest - Same as above.
4. Metropolis, Voices, LTL, UAGM, Lines in the Sand - Granted, these
songs are hard for first time listeners to get into. But they will
leave anyone impressed with the sheer musicianship.
5. BMS, JLMB, YNM, Lie - Songs that may be easier for non-DT fans to
get into. Plus these are the songs that the casual listener may have
heard before (as w/PMU).
All in all, the more complex the music, the harder it is to get
someone to like it in one listen. John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin was
once asked about the audience reaction the first time "Stairway to
Heaven" was played (before the recording was released). He said they
just sat, politely clapped and then started yelling for a "Whole Lotta
Love". The fans were not impressed.
On the other hand, Micheal Jackson fans liked "Bad" on the first
listen. (Of course he repeats "Bad" about 750 times, so by the end of
the song, you should have it memorized...)

I would never replace James. If he were to leave, being one of the
saddest days in history, I think DT should become a 100% instrumental
outfit. I just can not hear any other voice in his spot.
On another note I would like to hear James and Tori Amos doing a duet
together ( like Ozzy / Lita ). That would be very cool IMO.
Tell me what you think? OR another person instead of Tori?

was here in Denver at Red Rocks ( Yep same place as his live CD is recorded
at) for 2 nights (Sun and Mon). I saw him on Sunday night and despite 20

of the songs that they did ended in a minute or two of just jamming. Their
studio efforts are great IMO, but seeing them live totally blows that
away.

Instead of offering one perfect setlist, I'm gonna offer up a bunch of
(far from) perfect ones so that those in power can choose whichever one
they think fits the day best.
For the first one, it's obvious that James is leaving. Therefore we need
an all instrumental show: Erotomania; Eve; Raise the Knife; Ytsejam;
Hell's Kitchen. Playing around a bit and adding a few short teasers (ACoS
I, IV & VI are allowed) should bring this up to the appropriate length.
Next would be the Kevin Moore Memorial Set, opening with 6:00; Lie;
Surrounded; Space-Dye Vest; Only a Matter of Time [ideally they would coax
Chuck D out for this one]; Wait for Sleep (segue into teaser of LtL [but
that's Myung] then close with Pull Me Under.

Sorry, I had to step into this one, as a few of you expected since I'm a
huge Angra fan :-)
First, if you think James is a great singer and Andre Matos isn't I think
you have to admit that you are biased towards a specific type of singer.
Technically Matos blows James away and that's a given, James is not
technical by any means and he's not worried about singing in tune.
Second, if you find one single note that Andre Matos sings out of tune on
any of the Angra albums, I swear I'll dye my hair blond (wait, I just did

piano concertist and he has a degree in composition and arrangement. This
guy does NOT sound out of tune and anybody that knows anything about pitch
will agree with me.
I think if you think Andre Matos sings out of tune it's your ears that need
a tune up. You just have no idea what you're talking about.

Sebastian sung Jacob's Ladder. Devin Townsend sung Natural Science which is
my favorite track in the CD alongside with Fates Warning's Closer to The
Heart (if you still think Ray Alder can't sing, just go and see him sing the
best version of that song I've ever heard - sorry Geddy).
As for Sebastian's track, I agree with what already was posted here on the
jam a year ago... he breathes waaay too loud, is that supposed to give me a
hardon or what? :-) But he did a great job, I gotta give him that.
I always thought Sebastian Bach was an OK singer, until I heard Subhuman
Race, that CD proves that he is beyond just good, he's awesome and can pull
off any style from pop ballads to growling that comes close to Pantera.
Now as for his personality that's a completely different story. Hey, didn't
he and Labrie use to hang out?
