I agree. His vocal arrangements are spectacular if you love that symphonic
metal style. I can understand how his shrieking could annoy some though. It
doesn't bother me though that he sounds like a woman. I don't care if he
sounds male or female... I like the sound of his voice. His lack of balls
works to his advantage in songs like Holy Land and Never Understand. But
sometimes stuff like Carry On can get old just cause it's too much and too
over the top.

No shit. Russel is the MAN. I got Divine Wings of Tragedy and it took a few
weeks for his voice to grow on me but he just has so many different weapons
in his vocal arsenal. He can sound totally powerful and gritty or smooth
and spine tingling. I thought this was the definitive metal vocal
performance until I got Twilight In Olympus. He steps it up a notch. His
growling isn't quite as cheesy metalish and he added even more different
tones to his voice. Check out Through the Looking Glass. He sounds like 20
different singers on one song!
Oh and Michael Tangermann of Superior is up there too. He's got tons of
power and range and he doesn't always sing high. You know he's got the
range but he controls himself to lay down some great melodies instead of
just signing high all the time...

OK. I have the hy single. But, I am almost positive that other singles
were released. Like BMS, or YNM. I even heard the Ps was going to be
released. If BMS was released as a single, are there any bonus tracks on
it? What about YNM? Was HY the only song released as a single?

I guess I needed some time to absorb the entire magnitude of this incredible show! DREAM THEATER ABSOLUTELY RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had been waiting for over 4 years to see them in concert, and finally did. By far, my best and favorite concert I've ever seen. I really like Derek S. as well. He is a jammin' maniac!!
That was the most crowd interaction I've ever seen in a band. Portnoy, Petrucci, LaBrie, and Derek were so cool the way they made eye contact and such. It seems as though Myung is the steady worker of the group who doesn't really like to get into the crowd much. That cool, though. Not everybody in the band has to ham it up like Portnoy and Petrucci do!
I still would like to know what the hell Portnoy did during his drum solo. He disassembled a drum and appeared to be playing with some people from the crowd. Was this planned, or did Mike randomly choose someone to do that little drum skit with?
I couldn't have asked for any better vocals than James' performance SAT. He was incredible. He hit a couple notes that could've busted somebodies eardrums!!!!
To top off such an unbelievable weekend, I ended up storm chasing (based out of Norman, Oklahoma) to northern OK on SUNDAY afternoon and saw the most incredible tornadoes I've ever seen! I saw 3 separate tornadoes that stayed on the ground for a total of at least 8 minutes among all of them. Truly an amazing weekend indeed!!

One other thing about the Fort Worth show:
the highlight for me was when Petrucci started jamming to track one of Liquid Tension Experiement. Then Portnoy hopped on the drums and jammed with Petrucci on the first two minutes of track 1.
That was COMPLETELY AWESOME!!!

With all this talk about Crimson's use of mellotrons, it has made me listen to the one King Crimson album that I own some more. I am now thinking of buying a new album. The one that I have is Thrak, and I think it is pretty cool. Any recommendations or run downs on their albums would be greatly appreciated, please don't recommend that I buy a greatest hits album, because I hate those damn things. If I like the band then I'm gonna end up with all their albums anyway, so a greatest hits album is a waste of 20 bucks.

Let's think of this. Examine the fans of deep purple and elp. Both bands are late 60s/early 70s fare. ELP is heavily progressive. DP really isn't. Either way, your audience is going to consist largely of people in their 30s and 40s, with some 20s mixed in such as us ytsejammers. The elp factin is going to love the prog stuff. The DP faction is going to love the harder stuff. This is the perfect venue for DT to play in. The proggy stuff will hit the elp fans while the sheer power of dt will hit the dp fans. If done right, we can win a lot fo fans over. Even though Labrie should and will never leave the band unless he happens to seriously sprain his ever-extended tongue during a concert, Sebastian Bach is more than qualified to take his place based on one thing (and I'm surprised no one's mentioned this): Bach's breathtaking performance of "Take The Time" from the Live In Tokyo video.

Someone asked me to make a setlist for a wedding, you know.. Create some athmosphere..
I'm sure you all have heard the first 1:25 of ACOS... Now what I am wondering about.. Do any of y'all know a band that has whole songs of that calibre? (i.e not particuallary progressive, can be instrumental, doesn't HAVE to be)
I got Alice In Chains : Jar of Flies.. I'll probably be playing a lot from that one.
If anyone has an idea, please cough it up, so I can listen to it and figure if I wanna use it.
(PS: And yea I will be playing a LOAD of Dream Theater.. including ACOS, Hollow years and several others)

Just a little tidbit: I've been in a rehearsal studio believed to have been used at some point by DT. It's located in Rockville Centre, NY, on Sunrise Highway down the block from a movie theater. Any LI 'jammers out there who might be able to confirm it was once theirs? The band currently renting it is known as Sonipath. I was chatting with their guitarist one night a few years ago (yes, they've been renting it since), and he told me that back in '87-88, OFB were renting the very same room I was sitting in. I guess actually *playing* on a stage DT have played on is an even cooler experience more worthy of mention, but I thought I'd share my little connection regardless.

I thought i'd enter in my .02 on this matter.
On my way home from from class this evening, i got to thinking about different aspects of the opening act slot. first, we have to keep in mind that most of the people will get there closer to the end of the set (or wander in halfway through). we need to keep in mind also that most of the people are deep purple fans first and foremost (and, let's be honest, most of them haven't even heard of dt) - and the amount of prog that OFB could throw at them could put them into shock. I think the last thing DT wants to do is upstage Deep Purple. Keeping all this and yet putting on a show that would make your average Deep Purple fan go out and buy a DT disc is a hard task, but one that I think that can be done.
Here's a hypothetical 45 minute set list (and reasons for my choices):
1) New Millenium (8.20)
Why this as an opener? Well, listing to FII, this seems to be a perfect opener - both in lyric matter and song structure. it's not "balls off the wall prog" and it's not just another song in 4/4 either. those who take the song as it is won't think anything of it, but it *is* a catchy tune. those who dive deeper (with your ears, not your eyes) find the true progressiveness in a song that doesn't appear so. the chapman stick would raise some eyebrows as well.
2) Caught In A Web (5.26) Our first chance to go into DT's back catalogue, and their first real chance to show the "balls 'n' chunk" that Awake is known for. It's a chance for the Deep Purple fans to get their first real chance to hear Progressive Metal at its finest. The interaction between Derek and JohnP during the bridge is bound to raise some eyebrows.
3) Peruvian Skies (6.43)
Going headfirst our 2nd of FII tunes (remember - this isn't supposed to be a DT greatest hits, but rather an idea for DP fans to buy DT's records), this shows the clever way that DT can mix their influences (Kansas and Metallica off the top of my head) in a way that is pure DT. The mix of soft/heavy parts will again get people into it - and would be a crowd pleaser, i think.
4) Burning My Soul (5.29)
Our 3rd FII track (and this being the first single), many people who have heard DT on the radio would know this song pretty well. Here's another chance to show some progressiveness to those who might not be so openminded - well hidden in a great rock tune. Again, those who just take it at face value will just think "that's a good tune" where others who look to turn deeper will see the tune for the genius that it is.
5) Voices (9.53)
Along with being one of the greatest DT tracks ever made, it's more virtoustic than the others. True, it's a bit long, but it's not so much wandering that will bore the Deep Purple crowd - actually, i think they'd *really* dig Petrucci's solo. The 2nd of 3 tracks in DT's back catalogue, this rounds out the Awake album fairly well.
6) Pull Me Under (8.11)
This being DT's only real US radio "hit" - is the obvious ending of the show. Yes, i know that this is the only track from I&W being played. Even so, this is the one song that i think most of the people in the crowd will know - and the chance for the interplay during the chourses will be good here - a great way to end the show.
Roughly, it's about 44 minutes (the times are from the studio versions). There is a nice balance of old to new material (3 new, 3 old) - and we show off not only DT's more "commercial" side but the progressive side as well.

Well besides the New Millennium at the end, the riff it starts out with is surprisingly like Tubular Bells. Having not heard the Savatage song, I can't label it as from them or not, but it probably counts more as a Mike Oldfield riff.
Hey, anyone out there know of any net samples from Amarok or the other big long non-Tubular Bells pieces? I've never been able to find anything beyond TB and some commercial albums by Oldfield.
