I don't really expect anybody to know this one. The Rush FAQ doesn't say
crap, but I know there's a lot of Rush fans here and they're a helluva lot
cooler than the ones on TNMS, so I thought I'd ask.

On the Signals album, Subdivisions track. There is a keyboard that they used
all over that track, and I would like to know what was it that was used
there. When I saw them on the Test for Echo tour, it was a tiny little
keyboard that Geddy had on the top of all his other keyboards and it was
only used on that song. I absolutely love that sound and I'd like to know
    what it is...

Since we're talking about melotrons I thought I'd throw that in...

Completely agree. I enjoy when they play live. Doesn't matter to me if
it's a cover of another band or not. Doesn't even matter if they're
covering a band I may not normally listen to. They're doing what they

:Maybe I'm misinterpreting something here. From what I gather, "selling
:out" seems to mean writing for a specific audience and not listening to
:the musical voice within you. Yes?

see, i think that's bogus because the only person who knows what that
artist's musical voice is saying is the artist.

personally, i think that the "selling out" as it is described here, is
when an artist starts writing music that the person who's screaming
"sellout" doesn't like. everyone on here that screams "sellout" about
Metallica, for example, just don't like the new stuff, so they'll call it
"selling out" since it doesn't coincide with their own musical tastes.

that's all imo, of course. :)

What is going on here, this list is becoming an anti-dream theater list I think. I read nothing but bashing. I saw the first show of this leg of the tour in Baltimore (Labrie's Birthday as a matter of fact) and he was far better than I have ever heard him or anyone for that matter. Better than the Images and Words tour, the Awake tour, better than Ray Alder, better than Geoff Tate - Labrie just requires a few days rest. Next time the management plans on recording or broadcasting a live show they should take this into consideration. If they broadcasted the Baltimore show, everyone here would be praising his incredible voice and not wasting their time posting replacement singers.

A few quick side notes....There are only 6 mellotrons left in existence. Robert Fripp owns 4 of them. Another musician who has used one on his last album is Bruce Dickinson. I'm not sure who in his band plays one, but there is one used on his "Accident of Birth" CD (which by the way is an AWESOME CD!) It says it right in the liner notes. If anyone wants a description of a mellotron...a good description, go to http://www.elephant-talk.com/

It has a full description of mellotrons on there somewhere....I think the best place to check is the FAQ.

Let me jump in on the melotron thrad. The actual melotrons are out of date, but you can get samples of them in several places if you are into keyboards. I actually would use the melotron sound if I had a reason to. Bear in mind, too, that Yes used the melotron. Listen to Heart of the Sunrise, or Close to the Edge. And you and I uses melotrons and so does Siberian Catroo. You probably could hear melotrons on Tales from topographic oceans and on Relayer, too. I can't recall when Wakeman stopped using melotrons, maybe after Tormato.

Well, if you are talking about the solo sound in subdivisions, that was a minimoog. I don't know what it is now. For the other sounds, the bass was done by Taurus pedals and the other sounds were probably from the oberheim ob8 or obxa or jupiter 8.

That would SUCK! I'd hate to see my second favorite band lose their singer and break up! Besides, what's wrong here? LaBrie is NOT leaving Dream Theater. Not now, not EVER. It wouldn't even be Dream Theater without him. It'd be like Metallica losing James Hetfield, or Megadeth losing Marty Friedman, or Rush losing Neil Peart. It just wouldn't be the same band! Also, up until last week, I had the impression from the 'jam that LaBrie was an asshole, that he did nothing with the fans and was abrasive. This is SO far from the truth. I met him last week at the Arizona DT show, and I must say I'd be hard pressed to meet a nicer, more down to earth person, especially in the music business. He seemed to really care about the fans...sheesh, he stood there for 10-15 minutes or so and gave us all a lecture on singing, right after he stepped off the bus.

    EXACTLY Andrew.

Sometimes when a band takes on a new direction or style, many people just are not ready for it, or find it difficult to adjust to the change. It has nothing to do with anything except what the band feels they want to write.

I've been a Rush fan since I was 11 (I'm 29 now) and the last Rush album I bought was Signals, because I wasn't "ready" for their new approach. Well, its been a lot of years since Signals was released, and I am now finding myself more and more interested in the material they produced after that. I'm ready for it now, and plan to soon get into what I call "second generation Rush".

As for DT, their "style change" on FII was a surprise to me, but I was more prepared for it. I think it's an EXCELLENT CD, and shows that Dream Theater can musically move in even more directions than we had thought. Although my favorite is still AWAKE, I guess I was more "ready" for FII than some folks out there, and I hope that Dream Theater continues to enjoy their right to play and record the music they want to, no matter what kinda crazy pyschadelic bluegrass style they come up with next :)
