I currently have Mozart's Requiem playing in the old DVD player. I love
orchestral music, but my problem is I wasn't raised listening to it ..... so I
am clueless as where to begin a decent collection. I am not talking
"classical" necessarily, I'm talking ORCHESTRAL. I have never really cared
for solo classical guitar or violin. Nothing wrong with it, I just don't like
it as much as FULL ORCHESTRAS.
Now my problem is because I don't really have a clue as where to begin - I
continually buy Orchestral CDs with ho-hum compositions. I in particular like
the dark, somber music with angry parts, depressing parts, and beautiful
sections. In other words - the "voices" of orchestral music.
Anyone here (because I respect the opinions of those here) want to throw out
some recommendations? Please include the conductor and orchestra recording
you would suggest - as well as the composer and the composition name in
particular.

Bah, pick up Yanni - Tribute. He's got a 40+ piece orchestra on it. There's alot of solo standout stuff on there, too, but all in all, it's the pinnacle of modern day compostitions, IMO. Danny Elfman (Yah, the Simpson's theme guy) can write some really intriguing stuff, too. He's got a CD or two of his works.
I also like Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, and Mussorgsky alot, too. If it doesn't sound too gay (oh, shit, not that word!) I'd recommend Disney's Fantasia soundtrack as sort of a starter for orchestrated music. Seriously. Gustav Holst's "The Planets" also kicks much ass as well. Then go buy the soundtrack for Les Miserables. =)

Right but wrong. Beethoven's Ninth *is* in the film, but the song that DT open with, "Theme from A Clockwork Orange," is in fact Beethoven's "Funeral for the Queen Mary", but arranged and performed by Walter Carlos (when he/she was still "Walter") on all these bizarre analog synths which he built himself. Really weird and cool, and the rest of the soundtrack is excellent. The synth version of the William Tell Overture is especially good for having sex to. =)

you might pick up a CD of highlights from Wagner's The Ring. the whole thing is four long operas, but you can easily find a CD with an hour of the best and most famous orchestral sections excerpted, like Ride of the Valkyrie and Seigfried's Funeral March.
i have one played by the Berlin Philharmonic, conducted by Lorne Maazel, called "The Ring Without Words," since they play 70 min of orchestral highlights straight through with no interruptions. very cool.
a note on Wagner - he believed strongly in the supremacy of the germanic people, and thus hitler used some of wagner's music for nazi things. the operas have germanic hero themes. the music is excellent, but his social beliefs were rather bigoted.

1. As far as i now KITH was on HBO for a short run but it was on comedy central for a few years 2. KITH was never on mtv in my memory (i could be wrong) 3. for those of you who want to know it was a show called 'The Edge' and playing the part of louie was a guy named Ken Marino. The Edge was mtv's answer to KITH, i think.

BRAVE is a great album, a masterpiece. Other than that, there are two songs on Season's End that are great (and are also on MADE AGAIN, the live album) and one which is pretty good. Three of the songs on HOLIDAYS IN EDEN are good, and can also be found on MADE AGAIN. "King," from AFRAID OF SUNLIGHT, is a great song. All I've heard from THIS STRANGE ENGINE is from the live concert at www.liveconcerts.com, and none of the new material was that special--but the sound quality from the net was atrocious so that could be part of it.
My advice is to get BRAVE or MADE AGAIN (which has BRAVE live and, though the sound quality isn't as good, some of the performance is better) or both.
Then, if for some reason you haven't bought Fish's SUNSETS ON EMPIRE, shame on you! Run out and buy it this moment. Better than anything Marillion has done since he left (even, possibly, BRAVE).
That's it. Today I'm putting up some Fish on Music that Kicks Ass. Now I have to pick a song--how am I going to do it?
