<< I guess it's entirely an opinion thing, but I don't get the "groove" feel
when I listen to CP. I just kinda see it as keeping the beat so Satch
doesn't have to use a metronome (that's going a little far, but my point is
     across :) )... >>

Satch is a tyrant in the studio, I saw The Extremist video and he was a
bastard. The musicians he had were Manu Katche' on drums and Nathan East on
bass. Now these guys are incredible musicians and have been hired by some of
the biggest names in music. So heres little Satch boy telling his producer
that the drums are out of time. I guess if it's not 4/4 Satch can't
comprehend. Anyway he wouldn't let these guys off of the leash to play. It's
sad really, he had the opportunity to hire top quality musicians and wouldn't
let them make a decent song great. In the end he got somebody else to play a
dirt simple drum line. He should stick to the drum machine at least he'll save
    money.

Again yes. The quality of both discs is outstanding. I personally
prefer "Paradox" over "Moving Target", although you really can't go

I agree that this is a fantastic album that pretty much everybody should have!

As far as "album of the year" - IMO "Tyranny" is definitely near the top, as is OiaL (of course). At this point though, my vote would go to Savatage's masterpiece "The Wake of Magellan".

I recently went to CDnow to gaze upon the release date of the new Rush release. Seeing as how I already pre-ordered, the anticipation is killing me.

Anyway, if you were to check the Video section in the Rush section, there is a Different Stages DVD listed for sale. Since CDnow has a tendency of being a bit vague at times, and since no other site, even the National Midnight Star, has any details on it, I am left to wonder if this contains video in addition to the 3 music CD's.

I mean, are all 3 CD's fit onto the DVD, plus video?

If anyone out there has a clue on this, please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Jeff E.

I'm starting to doubt in this guy considering Sacth music! :) And I don't know him from other place.

    > but he's usually just way too restrained for Satch's music.

Maybe Satch tells them: "Guys, I know you're all great musicians, but I AM THE STAR HERE, so you better calm down and lemme show the world how good I am on this geetar!" ;)

    > Crystal Planet would be a great album, but the > drumming on it is really dry,

That's exactly what I hate in CP. Too anoing rhtyhm section. While Satch might do an awesome guitar job, after 3 minutes you can't stand that bum-bap, bum-bap drum anymore! It doesn't even goes bum-bap, bum-bum-bap! :)

It's so simple that it almost looks like they want it to sound that simlpe! Which I found weird.

Not necesarilly MP kinda drumming but anymore, "more feel" as someone said.

Does Mangini plays also on the studio Fire Garden album? I'm lazy to go get the CD myself! ;) I know Greg plays on Cryin' Machine! But I don'rt think he plays on other Vai albums.

    Hi all

more reviews from foggy old Germany.

    MESHUGGAH - Chaosphere

The long wait is over and it was worth it. This album is huge, heavy and brutal. This is the aural equivalent of being violated by a rampant bull elephant - it hurts like hell at first, but then you start to like it. Words like crushing come to mind. So what about the music? The usual Meshuggah guitars, fast, very rhythmical and impossible to play air guitar to (how the hell do these guys count?). The vocals are aggressive, so aggressive that they make Phil Anselmo sound like a choir boy. And Fredrik Thordendal's guitar solos are sick, sicker, sickest. Listen to this album if you want to load up on energy. If "balls and chunk is where it's at" (who said that?), then this album is definitely there. Highlights are the first track "Concatenation" which is about as subtle as a kick in the balls, and the last track "Elastic", which goes from standard Meshuggah hard core to a long middle section of science-fiction like sound effects before raping your ears again with a veritable barrage of sounds. The silence that follows is deafening. This album redefines the limits of hard core metal. For Meshuggah fans this album is manna from heaven, hence my score of 10/10.

MY DYING BRIDE - 34.788%... Complete

British doom is alive and well. That is the message that My Dying Bride give us with their first album following the departure of the keyboarder/violinist and drummer. The new album is the logical progression from "Like Gods Of The Sun". The cookie monster vocals have gone completely, and the songs are a little faster than the early stuff, but the overall feeling of the album is dark, doomy and heavy. The guitars are down-tuned, keyboards are only used in moderation, and the new drummer does a sterling job. The one track that is a complete departure from anything the lads have done in the past is "Heroin Chic", which sounds like Depeche Mode on valium, but which is none the less interesting. I don't, however, understand why the track has been censored, especially since the words that were "bleeped" out can be read on the lyrics sheet! My favourite song is "The Whore, The Cook And The Mother" which has a wonderful middle section of keyboards and weird samples. And anybody who doubts that the boys can still play "real" doom should listen to "The Stance Of Evander Sinoue" - it's all there, you just need to go out and buy it. 9/10

    THRESHOLD - Clone

Wounded Land was a great album, as was Psychedelicatessen. Clone isn't. It starts of well with "Freaks", a good hard rock song with a Deep Purple feel. Then it goes downhill from here. The vocal performance is simply bad - not a patch on the old singer. Everything is very bland, a much of a muchness. I feel that the band has tried too hard to make this album good, and they have achieved the exact opposite of what they intended. It's not unpleasant to listen to, but none of the tracks do anything for me. If my CD dealer hadn't given me a promotion copy, this album would have stayed in the shop. At least I'll be able to put my coffee cup on it. 5/10 for trying.

And the new Gathering album is out on Monday (well, in Europe).

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: 35007 - 35007

I believe it was Kyle McCabe who said something about liking Campitelli's drumming on CP because he didn't "get in the way." and preferring "more groove and less chops." With my original post complaining about JC's drumming, I wasn't really referring to chops per se. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. What I was really referring to was feel. Campitelli is too mechanical, IMHO. To use Fire Garden as an example again ('cause the album is just SO cool) listen to "The Crying Machine" with Gregg Bissonette on drums. No 12th note fills or polyrhythms or insane playing on this tune at all. Listen to how GB plays slightly on top of the beat giving the tune that sort of driving quality it has. His fills are all really loose (and definitely not chops-y) and he doesn't "get in the way" of that bass groove or Steve Vai's guitar part at all. If you put Campitelli on this song, I feel all of its style and flavor would vanish in his tendency to play mechanically. The point of all this rambling being, Campitelli doesn't have the correct style of play (IMO) to fit with Satriani. A good "feel" drummer (like Bissonette, Manu Katche, Steve Smith) would make his music MUCH better. Incidentally, I thought the phrase "less chops" was banned from this digest. :) Rahul Ananda

Since I'm very close to killing off all backlogged orders, I'm going ahead and opening up for pre-orders on my latest project, "The Rudess Experiment".

It's a soundboard recording of a September '94 performance where Jordan Rudess was filling in on keys. It was the only show he ever acted as interim keys player, and luckily enough, it was captured on tape in full soundboard quality.

This is from the same show as the TTT sample that was floating around awhile ago, so I'm sure most of you have heard at least part of this gem so far. =) I'll have additional clips up on my page sometime soon.

The show is only around 45 minutes long, which leaves me 30 minutes to play around with. I have lots of soundboard-quality and just plain rare things I could use. I'll decide on that later, though, but you can rest assured it will be one interesting disc.

It'll be standard Scarred fare... magazine-quality multi-page liner, painted disc (not stick-on labels), etc.

For more information (tracklisting, etc.), go to the URL below.
