Uh huh. Yeah, Satch was such a bastard that Nathan and Manu came back a

were delighted to work with him again.

    Hey all!
I had the extreme pleasure of seeing Satch last night at the State Theater
in Minneapolis. It was billed as "An Evening With Joe Satiriani". In other
words, no supporting acts- Satch all night! The show was amazing, and nearly 3
hours long! It's cool because he's playing some different songs this time
around and of course, plenty of new stuff. In fact, you can go on Satriani.com
and there's a section where Joe asks you what songs you'd like to hear on this
tour, so it seems each show is a little different than the previous. Anyways,
here's the set list from Friday night:
    1.Psycho Monkey
    2.Circles
    3.Flying In A Blue Dream
    4.Up In the Sky
    5. House Full of Bullets
    6.Crush of Love
    7. Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing
    8.Secret Prayer
    9.The Extremist
    10.Summer Song
    11.Look My Way
    12.Piece of Liquid
    13.I Believe
    14.Cool #9
    15.Satch Boogie
    16.Ice 9
    17.Love Thing
18.Stu Hamm's Bass solo- Which was the usual<amazing>stuff he does, "Peanuts"
theme, some "pretty" stuff for the ladies, and something new which rocked- he
did a bass solo performance of Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again"- Left hand
hammering the bassline, while the right hand fingers tap the melody! Excellent
shit! Hilarious too! Anyways, where was I....oh yeah..
    19. Ceremony
    20.Train of Angels
21.Always With Me, Always With You
    23.Big Bad Moon
    24.Rasberry Jam Delta-V
    25.Surfing With the Alien
    Encore #1
    26.Time
27.Goin' Down --(Which was one of the "jam" songs at the end of the G3 show)
    Encore #2
    28. Rubina
I'll quit stating the obvious now. Catch him while you can, before he starts
doing another G3 tour. Who knows how long it'll be before he tours alone
    again!

I'm not getting on your cases for arguing. Arguing is great. What I'm
getting on people's cases for is dissallowing Mosh's right to argue, and
then accusing him of being the one to do it.

    Hello everybody,

I was at Ozzies music yesterday, and I picked up an issue of SLAMM. It had a
review on DT's Once In A Live Time. He knocked the hell out of it. I
couldn't believe my eyes when I read it. He didn't have one good thing to say
about it. He only gave 1 and a half stars to it. Here are some things he
mentioned..." Mike Portnoy's solos are unimaginative and just space
fillers...James Labrie sounds like Geddy Lee tone deaf...and Petrucci plays
solos worse then from the movie spinal tap(and they were just joking). That
is what came from the mouth of this reviewer. How could someone say this
about Dream Theater??? What kind of Crack was he smoking??? He said more but
I will let you read the rest for your self. Just pick up SLAMM and find one
of the worst reviews ever given.

    Later all,
    Justin

Just got it downloaded, and I love it! James sounds awesome and I think this
version of the song is far superior to the studio version. Aldous Hucksley
once commented that you shouldn't change your own works after they've been
completed and spread, because while you make some improvements you may lose
something special that you will never regain. I love the different melodies
they added to the studio version, but I think this version is superior both
lyrically and musically. Why did they change so much.. the song was great as
    it was.=20

    Things I really like:

At the end of a Cieze the Day and beginning of darkest winter, James
screaming "PLEASE DON'T GO" is fantastic. Very dynamic and very powerful.. I
don't know why they removed it... also.. why did such great phrases as "Love
is not a passing roar, it's an endless horror that goes on and on" get
removed? It seems like Mike changed what he was trying to say during the
song.. the older version seems to be about dealing with loss. If anyone has
    comments, do tell.=20

The following is an intellectual insight into the mind of the author. It's
contents may not be suitable for young audiences. Parental discretion is
    advised.

Fear not, it's just the way the music world works these days. Well, pretty
much the way the whole world works these days. We live in a world of sleep.
The 80's was a time that the media reared its ugly head and slowly crept
into our homes. It suffocated us with new technology and bred us on
laziness and commercialization. We turn on our televisions and fall asleep,
prone to watching, enjoying, and accepting all that is passed our way. The
90's are the years of the subconscious domination of the human psyche. By
the year 2010 human thought is expected to be completely dominated by
corporate enterprising. You can see a fair amount of it at work just by
going to the local department store. People have a much greater tendency to
buy the "name brand" foods and services when the generic and local products
are cheaper and similar if not better quality. Dream Theater is one of the
few major musical acts today that does not fit into the Enterprise's divine
plan and they are fighting with what artillery they have to put them down.
Publication is the opiate of the 90's and many are completely content to
appropriate it in whatever fashion they can. People will read the articles
and believe them. It is only we who can fight them and liberate the people,
showing them they have a choice. So many people I've introduced Dream
Theater will subjugate them without having listened to them. Many of those
are astonished by what they hear. So why is talent void from the
Enterprise's scheme of things? Why can't talented bands be allowed to be as
popular as the rest of the mainstream?

The answer is money. When you look at the broad picture, it is so simple
for a major label to find any terribly untalented band that seeths in the
backstreets of metropolitan America. They reside in every bar, club, and
coffee shop for miles around. They will take contracts for the same amount
of money as any other starting band, but they have no rights to make demands
to the record executives for more money, more promotions, better equipment
because they are easily replaced. If talent were a consideration in the
music world, record execs would be hard pressed to find a replacement for
the major name band that just walked out of the office. Many antagonists of
this theory will argue that people listen to what they choose. People could
listen to Dream Theater ad nauseum if they wanted but they don't because
they don't like them. I say posh. People don't listen to Dream Theater
because they aren't even on the menu. What's worse, not only are they not
promoted, they are often belittled by publications such as the one listed
above. It is people like us, who choose for ourselves, that keep Dream
Theater alive. Dream Theater is an awakening, and they know it. It is not
only the Band, but up to us to promote the Band in a positive fashion and
increase our numbers. Then, and only then, can we rally our troops to meet
at the foot of Corporate Enterprise and take it apart piece by piece, at
once enlightening the masses and helping our masters to ascend to their
rightful thrones as the benevolent watchers of humanity.

There is truth in these words. Let them be beacon which shall guide us into
the future with open hearts and minds. I would like to join you but I must
now flee for my life as I have exposed too much of my knowledge and They
can't allow me to spread the disease upon their plans. What we fight is
insubstantial. It is bred within us and fighting it makes you an enemy of
all around you. We must teach everyone to fight against it. The enemy is
simply within our minds. It is difficult to fight, yet simple to defeat.
If you wish to hear from me again, decode the following message and we will
    rendezvous...

The attic in Charlie's mansion has curtains hanging before the Thursdays
    between the moon.

Or maybe I've listened to Tyranny too much lately.

    hail ytsejammers...

that's a very interesting topic, well, at least for me. drum machines can be very useful, but overall they suck. CP can be a very "simple" drummer, as charlie watts and phil rudd; between lots of other drummers. but there's also beauty in simplicity, besides, different drummers have different approaches and styles. it may seem strange, but drumming like rudd or campitelli is also hard. keeping the groove may seem simple, but it's not. if you listen to ac/dc carefully (while rudd was on the band and in ballbreaker), you'll notice he's always a little "late", not enough to screw the music, but only to add swing to it. drummers who "dare"to play simple are always underrated. don't get me wrong, i love MP's style, i think he really rocks, as neil peart and carl palmer, but we're talking 'bout different styles here. satch is satch, it's not a "real" band, it's"joe's experience", there's no room for great drum fills and chops there. and the drum machine? well...drum machines are made to play techno. for as simple as a drummer may be, a drum machine will NEVER substitute him. music is to be played by humans. anyways, i think this topic goes further...a lot further, specially if there are many musicians in the list...

And about Campitelli on CP, I see what you mean about feel. I do disagree though. I think the feel of the drums fits most of the music. But thats just my opinion. Thats probably the same reason why people liked CiS and I hated it. To each his own... anyway...

Hey, Well, I'm trying to plow through a set of jams from this week, but I'm getting damn tired of reading them. I wondered why things got so active mid-week. I should have known someone had brought up one of the forbidden topics. Oh well... As for the Saigon Kick thread, glad to see them mentioned, as well as Jason's other projects. This is a great example of a band trying like hell to get around having the interference of a label's meddling. They got screwed by Atlantic, so they're doing an end around. We'll see what the results are. I used to run their mailing list (for about a year and a half), but Jason informed me that things had pretty much halted as far as SK, so I kinda gave up... And as far as their new CD, Greatest Mrs. (a best of comp.), its available in stores as well as their website, so hunt it down. The song selection is fairly good, and it includes one non-album track and three live songs, so there are some bonuses... Hey, Hey, Hey is a great song. Someone mentioned Satch having a song with a Lovecraft title? I'm curious to know which this is (Hill of the Skull?). I know he has a Vonnegut reference (Ice Nine), as well as the old Fisher Price one, but the Lovecraft escapes me... I for one have already shelved OiaL. I listened to it a lot the first week, but not at all this past week. Don't have any real reason why... I guess it just came and went for me in a flash. One more thing I noticed: I fully expected that in the acoustic TAMP, when only the piano plays for the third verse after the solo, that the full band would come in for the chorus. I was sorely disappointed when it didn't. I still prefer the album version. Back to my jam-plowing...

Hey, I had to reply to this.

    >Satch is a tyrant in the studio, I saw The Extremist video and >he was a bastard. The musicians he had were Manu Katche' >on drums and Nathan East on bass.

I can't see how Satch could have been a bastard to Manu and Nathan when he didn't even WORK with them until three years after the Extremist album was made. (Was it maybe Simon Phillips and Doug Wimbish?)

    >I guess if it's not 4/4 Satch can't comprehend.

Obviously you haven't ever looked at a piece of sheet music from the Satriani catalog. As for Jeff Campitelli, he's a friend of Joe's from his days with The Squares and I cannot fathom why Joe would replace Jonathon Mover with Jeff, for touring or studio. On the 1996 tour, the band was Joe, Stu, Jonathon, and Jeff (on rhythm guitar and keys). The presence of the rhythm guitarist really detracted from the show as it allowed Joe to not do his usual rewriting of songs to include the rhythm tracks in his leads (a la Ice Nine on Dreaming #11). I was minorly disappointed. Fortunately the show blew me away anyway.

These are my impressions, carven over a period of many years, of the man they call Dr. Mosh. I'm sure he has a real name, but speaking it aloud would be like challenging Portnoy to a long-distance beer-spewing contest - you just don't do it because pain is the result. This post is primarily for anyone new to the list. It also serves as a refresher for anyone who's been here since the beginning and has fallen under the hazy impression that Dr. Mosh is a nice guy. Snap out of it.

Dr. Mosh doesn't have anything nice to say about, to, or in defense of anyone. If you consider yourself an ally of Dr. Mosh you may as well carve a slot in your back with a sign that says "place dagger here." When Dr. Mosh was five years old he got into an argument with a kid in a sandbox. He then gave his lunch money to some big kids on the playground and got them to flip the sandbox over on top of Poor Bastard #1. If you check Dr. Mosh's diary you will see that sandbox-sandwiched kid listed as "The Prime Poor Bastard - the bastard who first caused the internal and eternal spring of caustic venom to well up within my soul." Dr. Mosh has made no attempts to plug up this spring of evil, in fact he has a spigot between his ribs which he uses to periodically drain his bulging soul and fill up large metal kegs with his special brew of gloom and doom. He serves the stuff at college dorm parties, which results in the instant death of everyone who drinks it, allowing Dr. Mosh to destroy everything in their crappy cd collections, which is anything Dr. Mosh himself doesn't listen to. On Dr. Mosh's wall you will find a collection of abandoned hubcaps, which Dr. Mosh considers to be his only true friends in life. When he's feeling down, which is always, he hammers the hubcaps with his fists, a bonding experience that he simply can't share with human beings without going to prison. The hubcaps are named after the gods of death, plague, destruction, and the underworld, taken from religions and folklore the world over - Anubis, Satan, Neptune, Shiva, etc. Dr. Mosh's diet consists of sawdust, motor oil, cute little puppies, and shards of broken glass preferably from shattered stoplights because he doesn't stop for ANYONE. When he isn't in the mood for a full meal he relies on small chunks of concrete to keep him going, sometimes preferring to gnaw on his trusty iron baseball bat, Excaliber. He named it Excaliber in 1991 after he realized he could use it to destroy any and all grade-school children's science projects. This helps him in his quest to eliminate other people's sources of inspiration and happiness, which is his ultimate goal and sole purpose in life. Dr. Mosh hates your guts. He always has. He always will. If your aim is to gain his affections or understand him, kill yourself now because both of those things are impossible. Knowing Dr. Mosh in real life is about as pleasureable as putting on a suit of thorns and swimming around in a sea of lemon juice. Believe me. I KNOW.

If you believe what I just wrote, then you believe exactly what Dr. Mosh wants you to believe. Letting him get to you is about as healthy as letting ME get to you. Snap out of it. ;)
