Doesn't Christian/Killmary have one of these? I think he does, he'd probably
be able to tell you all the subtle nuances of the instrument. As far as I
personally am concerned, every high-end Yamaha I've ever heard live is
everything a bass should be.

Sorry, but I was rapidly snickering about this post for some reason.
>I need to find out about which type of CDR is generally the best. What
>about Maxell CD-R74's?
Actually, I think the best are Hewlett-Packard Gold on Golds. At least
they're (not there, damn homonyms) "supposed" to be, yet, as with all HP
products, they are rather spendy. I just use TDK CDR's that I can buy cheap
from Costco and I've never had a problem with them. They work fine in all
the CD-Roms, Cd players, etc. I've tried them in and they only cost $1.50 a
pop. (Or only $1 after rebate!)
Now let's talk about subjectivity....
Go buy an album from a band called "The Mimes." They have 14 tracks of
silence on their discs. After that, I want everyone to post here telling me
what they "think" they're playing. And there you go. Subjectivity 101.

Hey,
Been away for a few weeks, my Son's been very ill, but I'm glad to say he's well on the mend now! Where did all these newbies come from...? (not a bad thing just seems all of a sudden to me...). Some things that made me laugh...
from Pieter :
><ASCII sound clip> daa daa daa daa daa daa daaaaa > da da da daa daa da da da daaaaa >.. > >Does anyone know what piece this is and maybe who composed it ?
This has to be one of the funniest quotes I've seen in ages...no really.
And finally from Raivo:
>John "My sig is 18 lines long and that's a lot" DiBella: > >> Jimmy Page - Sounds like a 2 year old with a broken arm > >I'm sure that Steve Vai person would ferociously disagree, let alone >dozens of other guitar players out there right now. I rather doubt rock
>music would be the same without him.
I have to agree, Jimmy may not be able to shred like JP and Vai etc but what's the point of having a great solo if the song around it completely sucks...? Jimmy was (is?) the RiffMaster, a god who cannot be touched, my Wife and I saw Page and Plant earlier this year and I'm still buzzing....amazing stuff.

This list is for fans of Heavy Metal music in Colorado. It can be used for any discussions related to heavy metal. Some of its uses include:
1) Announcements of local metal shows from bands, club owners, fans, etc. 2) Discussions about where to buy heavy metal disks. 3) Postings from musicians and bands looking for members 4) Discussions about heavy metal bands you like 5) Anything else related to any form of heavy metal
This list is completely free for everyone. I expect bands, club owners and promoters to use it for free advertising for heavy metal shows. This list should be spam free since it only accepts posts from registered email addresses.
If you are tired of not finding out about local metal shows, not knowing when tickets go on sale, seeing metal bands playing to small crowds, etc. then please join this list and help spread the word about the Colorado metal scene.
I don't want to have to enforce many rules on this list. The only rule right now is that I will not tolerate personal attacks, flames, or cutdowns against any list members. This list needs to remain a friendly place to openly discuss metal. Also please remember that everyone has opinions and they are just that: opinions. If someone doesn't feel the same way about a particular band as you, that's OK, it's just their opinion so don't flame them.
Please tell any other metal fans, bands, promoters, club owners, local music magazine writers, etc. about this list.
To complement this mailing list, a Colorado Heavy Metal Web site was created that contains an Upcoming Shows list, a Frequently Asked Questions List, and much more. The address for that site is: http://www.pcisys.net/~digital.man

NEPENTHE - Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt Rating: * * * *
USA 1997 IN EAR VISIONS IEV9502-2 Total time: 44 minutes
Nepenthe are: Jason Rosenfeld - vocals Todd Mizenko - guitars Jamie Boruch - drums Matt Mizenko - basses Eddie Konczal - keyboards
The tracks are 1. Skyrocketstereo (7:44) 2. Moses does not breathe (8:46) 3. The ugly and the brave (7:05) 4. Sorrow 5:04) 5. Beauty is a warm mind (3:43) 6. Brethren (one burning question) (7:18) 7. Moses does not breathe (single version) (4:20)
In 1990 brothers Matt Mizenko and Todd Mizenko formed Nepenthe together with Jamie Boruch. The bands initially name was Ars Nova and they are playing a music that can be described as modern progressive rock or progressive pop, comparable to early Genesis, Marillion and Yes. This could maybe be of interest even for lovers of Dream Theater.
In 1993 they released their first CD "Turning The Tide" under the name Ars Nova and in 1994 they changed their name to Nepenthe, a word that describes something capable of making one forget grief or suffering.
In 1995 they began the recording of "Everything Was Beautiful And Nothing Hurt", that was released in 1997. This is obviously a very talented group with songs containing many atmospheric mood and tempo changes, together with intricate guitars and bass. But it's not only the musicians that are great. The vocalist Jason is a very good singer too. Although this sometimes being a very intricate album the choruses are very catchy.
If you like very beautiful progressive music, this is very good and definitely worth owning. In my opinion this is one of the best albums from 1997.
The band is currently working on their new album that probably will be titled "Thistle, Thorn and Ember". They also got a new lead vocalist in Vince Ascoli who used to sing in the Yes tribute band Relayer.

Yes! As good as Romantic Warrior is, check out the album before that called "Where Have I Known You Before" which REALLY reminds me of prog!

Try "The Age of Impact" by The Explorers Club (w/ John P.) . Trent Gardner does some wicked trombone soloing. -- Bret _________________________________________________ "He's dancing on the pedals in an immodest way!"

Hello people. To those of you who can't find Rhapsody's cds, you need to look no further. The cheapest place to buy them is Empire Entertainment. The url for their site is:
http://www.empireent.com/empire.html
They are very reliable, at least they have been for me. They also have tons of Angra stuff, as well as their new one Fireworks for $13.98 with free shipping to the US and Canada (this offer only for this last cd). They have lots of other stuff, so go check them out.

Hello everyone, Hope to see a lot of 'Jammers at Mike's clinic tomorrow on Long Island. Look for the short guy with glasses and a goatee with a black "FII" t-shirt on. That'll be me. : )
I see that Itchy has updated UACM with my directions to Alegante Caterers, where the clinic will take place (YOU'RE WELCOME, ITCHY!). Hopefully, some people won't still go to the Long Island Drum Center. They'd be mighty pissed if they ended up in Plainview instead of Massapequa. One thing that was left out of my post/Itchy's correction was the phone number for Alegante. If anybody needs to contact them, the number is 694-4554. Just another public service announcement from a NYC/Long Island 'Jammer. : )

DiMeola and Roth were very influential to Yngwie (obviously), but i know for a fact that Yngwie clames he studied paganini's 21 violin caprices.. whether or not he phrases his music to emulate Paganini is a completely different agrument. It's very possible (coming from yngwie probable) that as of late he's conjured up some crazy story about getting his chops from violin exercises.:) whatever.. i guess it doesn't really matter.. he's a damn good guitarist no matter how he got his licks.

i agree whole heartedly.. i put on that CD when i'm having a hard time getting to sleep.. very very very very monotones... i like yngwie's stuff a whole lot more.. neither of them are very taistfull but at least yngwie draws the line somewhere (i realize that this is a very relative statement; we all know yngwie goes overboard with the wankin guitar but george bellas takes that shit to new hights!!)

When I think of Steve Vai, speed never comes to mind. Speed is a fundamental tool that every musician should possess. However, when abused it can sound really bad. I don't think Vai is guilty of this mind you.
Tell me... If great playing doesn't qualify a guitarist for your list then what the hell does? Culinary ablities?
