I thought this went without saying, but please don't volunteer me
for things without checking with me first. Collecting images from
people, putting them online and having everyone vote on them will
take up heaps of time... Between UACM and the newsletter, I don't

Got a job, and changed ISP's. Anybody who has access to a cable modem, get it. It is fast and it rocks. Unfortunately, I can't get it to work with Eudora Pro correctly and have to use Outlook Express. Got my Once in a Livetime CD and I like it except for a few minor problems. James has some struggling problems in some songs, but I guess it is from the length of the show. It sounds to me like those older songs that he used to belt out during the Images and Word tour are getting a little more difficult for him, reminiscent ot he Geddy Lee syndrome, maybe? Mike's drums sound strange to me. I am used to his drums being much more melodic. Aolmost like Mike is playing a musical instrument. Toms can be tuned to notes as well as other instruments and I don't hear this so much, especially during his solo. I would've loved to hear the crowd on parts where the crowd participation is necessary, like the chorus to TTT, Pull me Under and LIe. The little bits of Enter Sandman and Have a cigar rock. Derek is a bit shaky as well, I have heard mistakes, although he kicks ass completely, but mostly his levels sound unstable. His Trinity sounds are really loud, especially his solo sounds. the organ is way too low, and some of the piano and string parts are almost barely audible. maybe it is my EQ. I am not sure I like the keyboard guitar panning split, either. And JP sounds low in some spots and really overbearing in others. It sounds like this could have been mixed better. And there are moments where the bass is burried although I know it is there. I love the album, but I think the production is a bit sloppy in parts. Another though, I know the stock Trinity piano is crappy, where does Derek pull his piano sound from? And another thing, I know he uses the Roland VK7 for his organ, but does he use a leslie cabinet or a simulator? Now for the totally unrelated stuff. Bought Age of Impact finally and it rocks, but I need to listen to more of it. I agree that the production is flaky. Give me those tapes, I will mix them next time. The ELP tribute sounds like a must-hjave, but I got my hopes up with the Rush tribute and was a bit disappointed. I fear the same for ELP. Those songs are incredibly difficult, and even more importantly, I hope that nobody is going to try to use shitty organ sounds in place of the real thing. Even the Moog sounds need to be taken care of. If you are going to do ELP, please for God's sake, don't kill us with wimpy DX7 sounds. :) The Subdivissions solo on A Show of Hands still makes me cringe and that was the original band doing it. Now, onto the stupid shit. Anybody know what it takes to get a real audio server going? I think I want to do one, and since I have the cable modem, I want to know what else I need? A friend of mine and I want to revive our old college radio show days, and the internet hasn't been regulated, yet. I want to make it a combination comedy and underground music show which will feature a lot of prog, and some alternative underground music from popular bands but the lesser played songs, maybe some other shit, bbut definitely stuff that radio hasn't beaten to death yet. I want a web site with a domain like http://www.nhbradio.com, the NHB standing for No Holds barred. All you gurus, especially Mosh, can you email me privately with what I need and how much it will cost? The ytseradio crew that got their thing set up may be able to help me here. Bear in mind, this is not a competitor to ytseradio, but my own project entirely. I will endorse ytseradio all the way. And finally, if anybody is on a service like Comcast at home, or a Eudora Pro 3.0.5, can you help me get the fucking program configured to work right? I can download all my mail, but can't send mail, or at least send mail to mailing lists and get responses. Thanks guys. DT rocks. By the way, what is the set list for the video? I want to buy it, am waiting for my Zenith talking VCR to come in, but I can't stand it that much. And finally, has Platypus been released, and what do I need to do again to get on the DTIFC? You can disagree, it's okay. I can even see your point about going on and on, because in some of their songs the jams just seem to endlessly ramble. You are making a broad generalization, however, a mistake that I will guess comes from the fact that you really haven't heard that much of their music. What you have heard may bland, but Phish do have some really great prog stuff (prog being a word that covers more than 'prog metal', a word that's actually really hard to define since it covers stuff that ranges from fusion to metal and beyond). And, as musicians, they're really great (far more interesting, in my opinion, than the dead, which fit better with folk than with rock, sometimes); they keyboardist and guitarist are fantastic, and the drummer and bassist are quite solid. Their music isn't your thing, I can tell, and I would certainly not suggest you "give them another shot". I mean, I myself am not even close to being a real fan: some of the jams that Phish-heads love are just boring as hell to me, and I lose interest--in great part due to the stuff you were talking about. But I do have two mixes that I made (about 70 minutes each) of really great Phish music, and a great deal of it is what many would call progressive. I agree with another Chris who wrote:

Here's a response to Mike Bahr, who commented on 2 things he was disappointed by......(he was very pleased with everything else...so don't start flaming him on this!)

MP: There actually is a real reason for this because I definately would have included it on either the CD or video.... John M. did not bring his Chapman Stick with him on the European leg that we recorded the Paris & Rotterdam stuff. (That leg was mostly festivals, at which we did not perform "NM", so he didn't bring his Stick....) You do get it as incidental music during one of the tour segments on the video..
<<<One little aside: jeers to Mike for just borrowing tracks from the WOWOW 1/24/95 broadcast... like we hadn't seen it already or something. ;) I'd rather have seen those Foundations Forum performances of those songs (6:00 and Voices) with Jordan Rudess... like in the PAL broadcast from MTV Europe that was brief but tantalizing.
MP: You can thank eMpTVy for that...... I tried to get the pro-shot Foundations footage from them, but they wouldn't let us use it..... The Japanese WOWOW was the only pro-shot Awake footage we could obtain the rights for...so I decided to include it in order to represent that tour for us....

Well I think everyone LOVES OiaLT, despite the absence of New Millennium. I DO think of it as the song of the new millennium. Perhaps neXt time they'll include it as well as more WDADU material?
And about the CD cases, well mine is great. The same as DM Singles. But I think that not everyone got the same case. It happens quite often that different batches have different case styles. I like the one I got, and I think it'll last a VERY long time. 2nd CD hinges are on the inside of the primary hinges.

I'll second that - *ake *he *ime to appreciate these guys and you won't regret it. 'Focus' has the most technically awesome and generally totally kick arse rhythm section (courtesy of bassist Shawn Malone and drummer Sean Reinert) I've ever heard.
The vox may be a stumbling point for most, but once that hurdle has been overcome, the obscurely innovative nature of the music will start to shine through and you'll be hooked. Well, that's what happened with me anyway.

I was wondering if I could get some recommendations from you guys regarding other progressive bands. Recently I picked up the Power of Omens - Eyes of the Oracle, an Italian progressive band singing in English which really blowed me away. Their album has long songs (one lasting about 20 minutes). I did not heard about it from anyone but from www.arenamusic.com where they have RA samples from the album plus the description as: Imagine Fates Warning's 'Perfect Symmetry' mixed with Dream Theater's 'Images and Words'. Now add Geoff Tate style vocals. Power of Omens delivers this and much more! It is definitely mind blowing. I really want suggestions regarding other progressive bands, particularly I want recommendations about Dali's Dilemma (where to find their albums), Royal Hunt, Cairo, Elegy, King Crimsom, and others. I would like to know what type of style they have and which of their albums would be their best. To give you an idea about my tastes I am really into Fates Warning, Dream Theater, Angra (I have Angel's Cry and Holy Land and they both kick ass, how good is Fireworks?), Stratovarius (One of my collection's treasures), Mercury Rising (I really admire their last album, they kick ass!), Lemur Voice (when's the new one coming out huh?), Explorer Club (ohh boy, a masterpiece that will be acclaimed for many, many, many years), Magellan, Shadow Gallery (I like them more or less), LTE, Rudess/Morgenstein Project, the 70s Kansas, and Rush among others. I did not like Superior-Behind, and I still haven't listen to my CD of Heaven's Cry. Well, OAN has hit another bulls-eye !! This time, its a high quality boot of Carolina IV (Angra, actually). Most of this 3CD set is taken from a special show that Angra did under the not too well disguised name of Carolina IV. This show was in central Paris at a small club called Cafe de la Danse. It consisted primarily of cover songs including WFS and there were a bunch of guest artists including Bernd and Michael from Superior !! Kind of like DT's Uncovered show of a few years back. The only thing shitty about this show was they only sold Hieneken beer (in France, no less !!) and that crap gives you the mother of all overhangs. Charlie, has the head stopped hurting yet ????
This was a very unique show and I have to imagine that where Angra are popular, copies of this CD will spread like wildfire !! The Carolina IV show takes the first 1.5 CDs of the 3 CD set. The sound of this show was really decent. As usual, this was an audience digital recording but I have been converted to audience recordings from liking soundboard shows because you seem to lose the live feel of the show from the soundboard. The only issues came during two popular songs (2 Minutes to Midnight and Flight of Icarus) where some obviously psyched members of the audience partook in a sing along. Most of the covers worked pretty well and this show is something very different and great to have as a collector's item.
Disk 2 is finished off with excerpts of a CD release party about two months or so ago in Paris (6 or so Angra songs were performed). The sound, as advertised, on this portion was not super but so what. It was advertised that way.
The Disk 3 is being made available only to those who have previously ordered CDs from OAN and gives the whole show that Angra did in Bourges last April when Angra played with Vanden Plas and DT. If you qualify, get this third CD for the incremental cost at any effort (hook or crook) !! Angra performed mainly their material at this show (Painkiller as an encore) and gave a top notch view from Angels Cry and Holy Land plus a working version of Speed called Speedy. Andre was amazing. The sound here is the same as on OANs boots of DT and Vanden Plas because it was the same show and the pirate sat in the same place for all three bands. Top notch.
The packaging (of the 3CD set at least) is absolutely first rate. And the CDs now come delivered in bubble wrap to prevent the jewel cases from becoming shards of plastic en route. Due to the recent weakening of the dollar, the price for US customers has risen a bit. There are rumblings that if the dollar weakens more that US currency wont be accepted (Francs only to avoid the perception that they are jacking up prices) but IMO that would be a major mistake by OAN. Those in other countries dont understand how inconvenient it is for US citizens to exchange currency and I think that it would hurt sales. If the dollar weakens, it will just cost more bucks !! I am certain if the dollar regains strength, OAN will acknowledge this as well, right ?? Hey, it costs me over $100 for my Clos de Beze now due to the shitty dollar !! That's life in the global economy.
