    28/Aug/98 show:

    Best:

      * Performance on vox: James (Ian's voice kept breaking, Greg Lake's
was surprisingly good - but not dynamic enough to unseat James)
      * Performance on guitar: Steve Morse (JohnP a close second... the mix
was poor so that didn't help, Greg L is just not in the same league)
      * Performance on drums: Carl Palmer (MikeP was good but no drum solo
hurt his case, IanP has fun up there and is interesting, but...)
      * Performance on bass: JohnM (the only other competition was Roger
Glover and while Roger wins on the "having fun" scale, from a
technical perspective he can't match JohnM)
      * Performance on keys: Keith Emerson (simply no comparison... tho Jon
Lord impressed me greatly, with a disinterested Derek spending too
much time scanning the crowd for babes)
      * DP Moment: Jon Lord and Steve Morse dueling it out
      * ELP Moment: KeithE playing backwards - from behind and above the keys
      * DT Moment: the break in Peruvian Skies(?) for a little taste of Pink
        Floyd and Metallica
      * Solo: Carl Palmer (one word: speachless....)

    Worst:

      * DT setlist too short
      * Balcony 1/3 full during DT, packed for ELP and DP (probably has
a direct effect on the next item). Crowd response was minimal
      * No encore for DT (ELP and DP had one)
      * Everyone sitting down the entire show in the balcony
      * Cheesy keyboard fireworks from KeithE
      * Fight in the balcony (was that a WOMAN that got tossed out of the club?)
      * Mike's haircut and dye job make him look like a SF native (if you
        catch the drift)
      * Derek dressed like a disco boy

And perhaps this should be also on the Guiness Book as the

BTW, on some side news, the Brazilian edition of the "Monsters of

    Hello Ystejammer!

The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety at <http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm>. Here's a little excerpt from it that DT fans may appreciate.

Coming at the end of September is a new release from Magna Carta <http://www.artist-shop.com/magna> - Shadow Gallery/Tyranny. This is Shadow Gallery's third release on Magna Carta. This progressive metal band presents us with a new concept album of 14 tracks divided into two acts confronting the world with the horrors of war. The album features guest appearances by James LaBrie and D. B. Cooper. And here's another little Magna Carta tidbit that I know will interest a lot of you. I was on the phone the other day with Jordan Rudess and he happened to mention to me that in October he is scheduled to head back into the studio with John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy and Tony Levin to work on the second Liquid Tension Experiment album! It seems the first on was extremely successful and definitely warranted a follow up. He said some sort of tour might also be possible, but no solid word on that yet.

    Spread the word!

    Gary

    >anyways.. from those of us whove heard it already , opinions anyone?

I have mixed feelings about it. In general, the music really kicks ass all the way through, Petrucci is awesome, most of the other guitar is awesome (I'm not too enthused with James Murphey's playing and tone, though) I have more respect for Billy Sheehan now; before I though he was just a wanker. Bozzio, of course, is awesome (he's in my top 3 drummer list with MP and Carter Beauford). But what's up with the trombone? I'm a big jazz fan, being a brass player myself, but that trombone is sorta weird. The one thing I can't stand about the album is the vocals. The words are cheezy as hell, and with words that bad, there's no way a singer can make them sound good. I don't even like LaBrie's performance. "Fate Speaks" and "Going Down down down down down..." are some of the lamest vocals I have ever heard (that's a fact, not a stinkin' opinion! :-). If it were instrumental ala LTE or Black Light Syndrome, I would probably like it better than LTE, judging from the instrumental sections, but the vocals really damage my opinion of the album. Although I do kinda like that Flash Gordon (theme song by Queen) inspired chorus in a nostalgic "that reminds me of that so-lame-it's-cool sci-fi movie" kind of way.

Onto a different subject, can anyone recommend some Al DiMeola to me? I've got his acoustic anthology, some guitar trio stuff with him, John McGlaughlin, and Paco de Lucia, but I want to get into some of his electric stuff, or maybe some stuff with him and Chic Corea. any suggestions?

Nah, my 2nd cousin on my mother's side can kick your 2nd cousin on your mother's side's ass. After all, Allison Krauss (who rules) didn't cover jack shit by Fiona, but she did "I Don't Know Why" by Shawn Colvin.

But then, I've seen your 2nd cousin live (overshadowed by Hooverphonic). No underwear, thank god.

All of this is getting away from the topic of the best female DT singer, Lisa Dalbello. Listen to her track on VICTOR. Whew!

Toyah Wilcox or Serpentine would be good alternate choices.

I was hoping that I could benefit somewhat from the "Satch = recommendations" thingy, but it ended up leaving me even more confused = where to begin.

Now, it seems like I have to listen to ALL the stuff by myself, relying = on my own opinion... But on the other hand, isn't that how it always should be? This proves that people's recommendations are worthless.

Hmmm, sound samples? I don't know, i don't even know if the link I provided still works, it was printed on the cd-booklet (1995). There do not seem to be any Time Machine links around, on UBL there's only a broken link...

About the vocals: the vocals are rather sparse on this album (many instrumentals), but otherwise they're quite good. High pitched indeed, and a lot of falsetto (not really agressive). But be aware that the vocals are not really prominent even on the sung tracks, they're 'integrated' (couldn't find a better word) with the rest of the music...

Also, pronounciation could be a bit better (not that he has a heavy Italian accent or so, but as far as pronounciation goes, he reminds me a bit of the Lemur Voice vocalist).

Hope this helps, since I'm not very good at describing vocals:-)

    Hi all!

Just wanted to ask for an opinion! Does anyone has to say something about the sound of JM's bass? To me, sometimes it seems very messy, like, it's turned on too much bass. Like there's a lack of treble or whatever that makes the bass sound clearer and more "visible". You can't hear it good enough 'cause of that. Especially I notice it on the live gigs records I have (LATM, bootlegs). The bass sound I'm talking about you can hear it good on the bass filled short break just before the guitar solo on live verzion of "Under a Glass Moon".

Now, to chase the bad spirits away, Yes, I like DT, I like JM and everything about it. :-) Just a thought!

    Hi!

I read somewhere about the beginning preparations and plans about LTE #1 where Mike says that they, having on mind the short time for the album to be recorded, wanted to make some covers.

    Suggestions were among others were:

Al DiMeola - "Egyptian Danza" Frank Zappa - "Peaches En Regalla"

These are great songs and I just can't imagine without sssssshhhivering (;-) how LTE will play and arrange them!!!!!

Mike, PLEASE have on mind these for the upcoming #2! :-) I think it'll be the coolest stuff on the album (not that the rest won't be...)

Anyone wants to support this? :)

Stodge wrote: > 2) Dreaming #11 - Phil left this out (I'm sure by accident), but it must be > mentioned as one of the greatest ever live works. Highlights: The whole damn thing.

I left "Dreaming #11" out for three reasons, perhaps none of them good:

    1) it's out of print or extremely hard to find 2) it's only got four songs total and many stores charged full price for it anyway 3) the three live tracks are represented on "Time Machine" (unless I've forgotten the tracklisting). The studio track is also on TM, except in live format.

Something that *should* be mentioned though is that "Crush of Love" is, in fact, a fantastic song. It turns the use of the wah pedal into an art form. I never heard a guitar speak like that before hearing that song.

Ah, Stodge, when will you learn? :) :P

You're right, the band got the name from the car designer. VP's singer fell in love with a Jaguar he saw at a car show, that's the origin of the band name. One thing about the name sucks: If you type "Vanden Plas" in any internet search engine you get a hundred pages full of damn cars!
