    Hello,
Oh, Phil... I'm the one who has to learn? :)

    >1) it's out of print or extremely hard to find

This perplexes me, as Dreaming #11 seems to be the disc I can find at EVERY
store used. Even though my catalog is complete, I always check to see who
was fool enough to sell back a Joe CD. I never fail to find this one.

    >2) it's only got four songs total and many stores charged full price for
    >it anyway

Agree completely. Its really only an EP, but stores charge $11.99 for it.
That's a travesty, but it will be twelve of the best dollars you'll ever
spend. But again, I see this everywhere used for $6.

    >3) the three live tracks are represented on "Time Machine" (unless I've
    >forgotten the tracklisting). The studio track is also on TM, except in
    >live format.

Here's where you stray, Phil. The three live tracks on #11 are Ice Nine,
Memories, and Hordes of Locusts, none found on Time Machine. There are
however, three songs from the same show as this (with Stu and Jonathan) on
Time Machine's live disc: Circles, Lords of Karma, and Echo. And though
Crush of Love is in live format on Time Machine, the versions are
    drastically different.

    Here endeth the lesson,

Can any of you give information on the following Dream Theater
bootlegs. Most importantly their sound quality (compared to a
studio/official live recording) and a tracklist, of course all
    additional info is also welcome.

    DANCE OF ETERNITY (BUFFALO, 18.5.93)
    DREAM CONCERT (DUSSELDORF, 11.2.95)
    GUITAR TALKING (KR)(ACOUSTIC AND CLINIC)(HOLLAND)
    INSTRU MENTAL (UNRELEASED 87 DEMOS)
    ANCIENNE BELGIQUE (BRUSSEL, 26.2.98)
SMALL CLUB ADVENTURE (2CD)(AMSTERDAM THE MAX, 14.4.97)
TOURING INTO INFINITY (2CD)(DEN BOSCH, 3.12.97 & BONUS)
    UNCOVERED (KR)(2CD)(LONDON, 31.1.95 AND BONUSTRACKS)

PS. Yes, I'm fully aware that there's an OFFICIAL Dream Theater Live
coming up and I'm sure to buy it the second it hits the stores, so don't
worry about DT not getting their share of my money.

LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT - SELF TITLED (94%), Magna Carta, 1998

In some albums, the musicians are having so much fun, that you can actually hear it in the music. Take Contraband, for example. What made that album so special, is not because some of the biggest names in rock came together to jam, but because the musicians involved were having *fun* while making the album. The reason Liquid Tension Experiment works, is just for this reason. They're having oh so much fun!, and that somehow comes through in this album. You want proof? Then turn to the very end of track no. 8, Universal Mind. It's incredible that they can purge the tension with teasing phrases like that. But you don't need to wait that long to listen to 4 accomplished musicians run riot. The album hits you right between the eyes from the first note of the first track, Paradigm Shift, and never let go the tension till the very end. The album can be intense (Paradigm Shift, Universal Mind), dramatic (Freedom of Speech), beautiful (State of Grace), or just teasing (Chris and Kevin's Excellent Adventure), and it is this versatility that i find amazing. It is just me, or is it Jordan Rudess' influence that John Petrucci sounds like a heavier Steve Morse at times? I feel that this is a very strong candidate for the album of the year, it is scary to know that the whole thing was recorded in less than a week. This one completely blew me away. -KJ

    Hi all,

There is basically one reason that John Myung's tone has to be the way it is: Mesa/Boogie guitar amps. JP plays with so much chunk (after all, balls and chunk is where it's at!), he leaves virtually no sonic space for JM to dick around. Add a keyboard on top of that, and JM's tone has to be boomy to be felt (since to be heard he'd have to add mids, which would interfere with JP and DS). Personally, I prefer a more flat sounding bass, say, like Gary Willis. I don't really know of any bands whose players have equal access to the frequency spectrum. Does anyone out there know?

I agree that he could cut the bass a little and flatten things, and maybe get a little higher in the mix, or even (oh my!) turn some others down a little.

Dunno, but I also saw a car that said Vanden Plas on the back. It definitely wasn't a Jaguar and it was fairly knackered, but had the words 'Vanden Plas' in the form of a badge just right of the boot (or 'trunk' for all you American lot).

I hope to meet some of you (party afterwords?) for the Finneus Gauge/Mastermind/Flower Kings show Thursday night at the TLA (downtown Philly, 3rd & South). I know some jammers are going, but I hope more of you are able to make it down to what probably be the #1 Prog show of 1998! I know D-Man will be in attendance, so I hope you will be as well! Feel free to email me if you have any questions, comments, or are in need of directions. I *may* be able to drive a person or two (depending on location), so if a lift is the only thing keeping you, let's work something out! The price is $15 and is sponsered by EC - which means you can call TicketShaftter (215-336-2000) and pick 'em up.

Hope to see many of you on Thursday night!

Hi all. Lately I've been expanding my CD collection, and now it's turn for CAMEL [the UK band, not the cigarrettes!] to be assimilated. I've stumbled upon a problem: most online stores I know (CD Universe et al) carry them only as imports, making the prizes go dramatically up.

I found out that Camel is carried by the www.artist-shop.com store, but I don't actually know these guys (and their WWW page is a little scarce in the gory details I want). So:

    1) Is artist-shop a US based store or a UK based one?

    2) Are they trustworthy enough to give them my credit card # and not be worried about this (as I'm not worried by giving it to CD Universe, Amazon ,etc)?

    3) Will DT ever come down to play in Chile?

    Thanks to all.

Someone asked what the organ stuff was right before DT came on at the 8/28/98 Warfield show. This is part of the opener DT always uses, but when they are the headliner, they put Alice in Chains' Rooster. At least that was last tour. Maybe they will change it for their next tour.

I kinda like the Clockwork Orange opening. Since waiting in anticipation for DT is the only impression I have for that song, if I ever wanted to flashback to the concert, I would only have to get the CO soundtrack.

I am going to be FIRST in line for the new LTE CD, thats for sure.

Just wanted to say a quick hi to everyone I saw at the Warfield show (In no particular order): Scott L., Paul H., Matt B., Neil E., Nicole ?, Lisa, and some others...Cant quite remember everyone. I saw Carol there too, but didnt get a chance to say hi :(

I was really impressed with Steve Morse, but not with DP. I can absolutely see where Petrucci gets the influence from him. DP was too straightforward for me I guess. Cool music though. I got into it in the concert, but I dont think I would want a CD full of it. It probably wouldnt get too much time in the changer in the car. Didnt really get inot ELP either. K. Emerson is pretty impressive, but I cant get into that kind of music. Too masturbatory for me sometimes. Their songs C'est La Vie and Lucky Man were cool though. Everything in their set seemed a bit too random for me. I was going to watch Carl Palmer's drum solo, but I just couldnt take the volume anymore. Had to get out. So I heard a massive bit of rumbling from the lobby, and I figured it was Palmer going off.

I kinda liked Mike's hair personally. THought it was much neater than the messy shag that he had during the FII tour. I think JP either needs conditioner or a haircut. His hair looks kinda ragged. Great player though :)

Set was great, and I think Met I was a GREAT decision for a closer. I LOVE how they play that real charging section from PV a second time after coming out of their bit from Metallica's Enter Sandman. Best part of the song. Petrucci's little shred solo right before HY on his new acoustic type guitar rocked...Great sound.

I did NOT like the volume though. Maybe it was the fact that I was right in front of the band. That could be it. What? What did you say? Huh? :)

Unfortunately, I can't comment on artist-shop, besides, the fact that they also carry Kevin Moore and Annie Haslam. But I can recommend some of the the albums Camel has released:

    * The Snow Goose; * A Live Record (2 CD set, containing the entire TSG performed together with the London Symphony Orchestra); * I Can See Your House from Here (or something like that).

Killer records. Kudos to Bernardo Pulgar for helping me out with them (kudos also to Opeth's vocalist, Mikael Akerfeldt, for mentioning this incredible band as one of his influences).

Oh, but Camel is *NOT* progmetal. It's prog *ROCK*. Don't expect to find fast stuff or metal or high-pitched-screaming vocalists. There are some vocals on some songs, but they're usually very sparse. And TSG is a beautiful instrumental album (it's a concept album).

    Definitely recommended.
