In a message dated 98-09-01 10:57:56 EDT, you write:
<< Just wanted to ask for an opinion!
Does anyone has to say something about the sound of JM's bass?
To me, sometimes it seems very messy, like, it's turned on too much
bass. Like there's a lack of treble or whatever that makes the bass
sound clearer and more "visible".
You can't hear it good enough 'cause of that. Especially I notice it on
the live gigs records I have (LATM, bootlegs). The bass sound I'm
talking about you can hear it good on the bass filled short break just
before the guitar solo on live verzion of "Under a Glass Moon".
>>
Unfortunatly everbodys sound is at the hands of the engineer. Which in some
cases really sucks! Oh well that's the way it goes.

I just read the review of the new live Fates' CD (and it sounds great!).
I'm just curious if it's out yet? If not, when?

>Soundscape-Discovery >I saw this band two years in a row at the Powermads. One question, how >can a band that sounds that good live sound like crap as they do on this >cd. In concert the band is prog metal big time. On this cd they are prog >pop(maybe). This has got to be the worst cd I have heard in a long time. >The cd just does absolutely nothing for me at all. The production for >one thing is horrible. Thorne's voice in the studio is awful. In concert >Soundscape is a must see band, but buy their cds at your own risk...
While I missed Soundscape at Powermad this year, due to an unexpected event (Powermad actually starting close to the time it was supposed to), I did pick up this album and I really can't disagree with your review more. This is definitely not a metal album. Perhaps that's where your problem with it lies. It's well written and well played. The singer sounds just like James LaBrie for the most part -- how you can say he sounds awful boggles the mind, especially when compared to most other prog singers. Same deal for production -- this album sounds good, even when I went nitpicky with headphones. My only problems with "Discovery"...
(1) It's kinda dis-con-nec-ted in parts. My major problem with most progmetal bands, vocalists aside. None of 'em I've come across can equal DT in songwriting ability. (Not that Soundscape is exactly a progmetal band...) But the individual pieces on this album are sweet enough I'm willing to overlook this fact.
(2) The last song drags on a bit.
Beyond that, a great album. A great non-metal album which I've spun quite often since its purchase. Definitely one of my favorites of the 20 or so I picked up at Powermad (which pisses me off even more about missing them play!).
So, I guess I can say this in closing -- I agree with Pat's last statement about buying Soundscapes albums at your own risk. It ain't heavy, there aren't many power chords, there are a lot of keyboards, a lot of the songs are in major keys, the lyrics are overly optimistic, ... If you're willing to accept all that stuff, give them a try. Just don't expect them to sound like something they aren't trying to be.

Hi, Jammers!! (Hey, Simon from Canada. Sorry that I could not write to you. Maybe, Hide with Spread Beaver hit most top selling artists of 1998 on Japanese national popular charts.) Thanks Joe and other people who mentioned about Christian hard music. I really like such comments on Christian groups. I knew that Narnia, Sacred Warrior, Touniquet, Treasure Land, Veni Domine, Saviour Machine, Deliverance, Believer and others which, you mentioned are Christian bands.
In addition, I added Whiteheart, Tidal Force, Siloam, Whitecross, and Recon.
Whiteheart is more soft melodic hard rock band which reminds me of 80's era of Yes and Rush with little bit of Marillion (Steve Hogarth era). I recommend Whiteheart's Tales of Wonder. ToW is really nice melodic album. If you listen to Tales of Wonder, then you will understand why I said that reminding of Yes and Rush and Marillion.\ But basically, Whiteheart is melodic and straight forward band, but it has something special for me. But I do not recommend people who do not like Bible message.
Tidal Force reminds me of Kansas-style hard rock band. Some people think that this band is definateley prog. I think that Happenstance (from DREG record complilation fearturing Clockwork and other independent groups) is also influenced by Kansas, big time. By the way, Kerry Livgren is a strong Christian I heard from my friend.
As for Siloam's Dying to Live album, this is my favorite hard rock reminds me of Gotthard, Fair Warning and Whitesnake a little bit. Sound production is not superb, but "Dying to live" contains nice songs. Especially, I enjoyed supporting keyboard player's work. Very nice clav playing which style is cross between Stevie Wonder and Donard Fagen.
Whiteheart is kind of controversial band, because of their vocalist and LA metal style. I happened to buy High Gear album. I do not recommend this album to everybody, but the song called AMERICA brought my eyes to tears, even though it is very simple mid-tempo ballad. I am not sure other Chrisitian fellows understand why I feel this way. But some songs actually moved me. The another reason I do not recommend this band is that the voice of the vocalist. He sounds like Steven Peacy of Ratt. However, I like his voice better and he can sing mildly on ballad. (I hope no one gets upset. I do not mean putting flame on anybody. So please bear it my opinion.). Although there are some weak points of this band, but I really like this band and music. Especially, Rex Carrol is a great guitar player. Check his playing on the song of "Attension Please" and "High Gear" and instrumental part.
I often see Recon album at Christian Bookstore, but I have never tried to check it out. According to Sentinel Steel Magazine article, Recon has similar style of Sacred Warrior and Queensryche-style power metal. If you are interested in Queensryche-style bands, go to Christian Bookstores immediately!! Recon already split up about a few years ago.
Oh, Impelliteli is also Chrisitian, too. I mean Rob Rock (vocal) and Chris Impelliteli. I am not sure that Edward Harris Ross is Christian or not (keyboard Player who also played Keyboard parts on the video of Fates Warning's A pleasant Shade of Grey).
Before I finish my post, I would like to say something. The reason why I wrote this opinion is just my recommendations of Christian bands. I also love all different kind of music. Sometimes, I check out Thrash/Death/Black metal even though I am not interested in their evil message. I hope my posting about Christian bands is just ok. Anyway, thanks for reading my comments. Have a good one!!

First, I would like to restate my top-priority question: Does anybody know what the band/song was that was playing right when Dream Theater was about to come on at SF on the 28th?
The rest is just a little babble on my part: As for best guitarist; I hardly think that Steve Morse was better than John Petrucci. First of all, what a person should look for (I think) in ANY musician is their songwriting. I mean, if someone doesn't have the technical skill to play well enough, that's one thing, but both Petrucci and Morse obviously have no problem in that area. However, on Morse's first few solos, they sounded like crap! there was no feeling in them at all. Maybe they just weren't the greatest solos in the first place. It sounded to me though, like he was just wingin 'em, and he's been playin for so many years, it seemed like he forgot to try or something. however, the rest of the set was excellent. However, I find Petrucci's songwriting and textures to be way better than Morse's. I might even go so far as to say that the technical skill that Petrucci showed during this show was better, though everything that either of them played was probably easy for both of them. Just wanted to get that out. ;-)

Hi there Jammers
After a month of summer vacation I'm back to base and since I was unsubscribed during that period I might have missed some thinks. I know that there is a live DT album coming up, in about two months and we are all happy about it, but what happened to Met. II???? Does anyone know? Please if Mike P. posted to the list during August, could someone be kind enough to send me his posting in my e-mail address?
Keep Jamming Mike

Well, hello!
There's a favour I would like to ask of you.
I would like to get my hands of either a digital recording (WAV, MP3, = RAM etc.) or a tab (preferrable, since I am VERY lazy! :-) of Jonathan = Wolff's Seinfeld bass line (the one played in the beginning of every = show). I surfed a long time yesterday, trying to find any of it, but = without success.
Can anyone help me out with this?? I'd appreciate it a LOT!!! :-)
(I really don't like the show that much (it's still on air here in = Sweden), but whoa, I do like that bass line!)

Henry Purcell - Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary ---------------------------------------------------
Yep, it's the original DT intro tape. It sounds much better with trumpets and choirs and everything than it does with the swirly keyboards of the Clockwork Orange interpretation. Some lovely stuff here.
Symphony X - Twilight in Olympus --------------------------------
I remember reading about this on the jam, so when I spotted it in Tower I thought I may as well give it a try. It's good, but sounds a little too much like Savatage for my liking. Still, it could have been worse. The singer has a great voice.
Are the members of Symphony X as fat in real life as they look in that photo?
