Does anyone know if any Symphony X or Conception t-shirts exist, and if
so, where they might be found? I've searched and searched to no avail.

Dude, you know that AC/DC will get into the soundtrack - Tolken has the orcs say "OI!" when they're capturing the dwarves and bilbo. (Of course gandalf is busy dropping quarters into his sock to bust dem orcs upside dey motherfuckin' heads, BITCH BOYEEEE....) I could see Angus Young screaming "Down, down to goblin town...OI, OI, OI, OI..." We could definately use some DT in there, although since Hollywood sucks, they'll no doubt stick Nirvana, Hole, Weezer, and Presidents of the United States in the soundtrack somewhere. Oh well, at least maybe we'll get lucky and they'll cast Leonardo DiCaprio as a dwarf. Leonardo: "Kili at your serv---"*SMACK* Bilbo: "SHUT UP, BITCH."

I want the part of Gollum. I'd dress up in a gold sequined Elvis costume and start singing

"Oh one last Fish, oh baby one last fish... it never felt like this...oh baby one last fish... Oh baby... SUFFER..." (Bye-Bye Birdie, for those of you who weren't in the know...)

PS, wouldn't there be 4 movies, not counting Silmarillion?

Greetings jammers. I have been away for a while, so I realize my question is outdated and therefore may be answerted with several "where the fuck have YOU been?"s....I am prepared for that. Basically I was wondering if anyone has any idea if there are any available versions of Raise the Knife with lyrics. I have the instrumental one, and I think it's some of DTs best stuff...so I really wonder how the vocals are (I heard them before their show in Tampa last year but don't really recall). Also, maybe some of you jammers with technical computer wisdom can help me on this one: I have in the past downloaded several MP3 files and when they play back, I hear it osunding all garbled, like bubbling...I can hear the music, at the right speed and all...but it just sounds horrible. This has happened to me with many DT MP3s, but the most recent and most disappointing was the classical piano version of ytsejam. I really wanted to hear that. So any jammers with some info on these things please write, I figure there may be a few other jammers like myself waiting for such information. Thanks to all.

Yeah I had a feeling that it wasn't Paganini. In fact I believe that the piece that Vai plays is called "Eugene's Trick Bag". I don't know how similar it is to the Reprise of the Turkish March that you mentioned but I haven't heard that piece. Eugene's Trick Bag is transcribed on the net if you can get into OLGA (parts of it are still up).

    Hi

I know this is totally NDTC but by helping me you will save yourselves a lot of grief. I have just changed ISP's and I can now use Outlook Express yet when I try to reply to the jam it insists on quoting the entire digest instead of just the section or message that I want. I used to use AOL and found it much easier since you just highlight the part you want and create a new message. Sorry for using the jam for this but any help would be appreciated. Please email me privately so that I don't take up space on the jam.

    Thanx Simon Christie

I keep seeing info about "Dream Theater Live '98" + bonus tracks being released in Japan. I have seen this at the Artist Shop, Jart Music, and other places. Is this the Japanese version of Once in a LIVEtime? Apparently there are not supposed to be any bonus tracks on the Japan. release. So can someone clear this up?

    Thanks - Everett

Here's my initial non-compensated thoughts on the new bootleg from OAN records (e-mail = Oanrec@aol.com). To true VDP fans, this is probably a must purchase. To the casual fan, it may depend on your current financial situation.

Two CDs, US$30, postpaid (first class and not turtle class) to the US. CD double jewel box included in the price. CD liner included and even pre-cut to fit. Audience DAT recording with what I would have to assume is some post-processing to clean up the sound. Reassuring to be paying for CDs and not to be financing the purchase of somebody's fucking gaming store.

Well, it's not a well kept secret that I love to be anal, so here are some nit-picks. The CD liners from OAN seem to be quite sticky. Both of mine have stuck to the jewel box although by extracting them and letting them "dry" for a day or two remedies this situation (???). Maybe after OAN prints them, they could let them dry a bit. The mailer was a bit wimpy and my CD jewel case cover was broken slightly. This is no problem for me because I keep many extras around, but others may bitch. Maybe by putting some cardboard around the CD before putting them into the mailer may be helpful. Last nit is that I am not sure if they wanted to identify the band members in order on the back cover picture but if they intended to do so, the order is wrong. I know for sure that Gunter is in the middle and I think that the order from left to right is: Andy/Andreas/Gunter/Stephan/Torsten.

The overall sound was decent, and quite similar to Static Progress. The CDs are taken from basically four shows, with two being acoustic. All shows were from the last 12 months. The sound on some shows was better than others but for a boot, the quality is at least as good as almost anything that ever came from "you-know-who". In fact, one portion of "Fiction" came from the same show as Static Progress. Shit, was that a great show to be at (ha-ha-ha, Skadz) !! The sound on the last three tracks (bonus songs from the Carolina IV gig in Paris this April) was tops. I am starting to like audience boots better than soundboard boots for the live feel of the reaction of the crowd.

I understand that it may have been difficult to decide whether to make this one CD or two CDs. For the casual fan, I think that the many repeats (3 renditions of two songs, 2 renditions of at least five other songs) may not be appreciated and one CD would have been better. But for the real fan - which is probably 90%+ of the people who are looking for these - the various renditions (electric/acoustic) are probably even welcome. Some highlights include a satisfyingly different acoustic treatment of "You Fly" and "How Many Tears".

High quality and efficient service once again with under a two week turnaround time including a US holiday which had to add at least 2-3 days of mail delay at my end !! I am really looking forward to future releases, especially one from a band that rhymes with Mangra !!

    Hey Jammerz -

I have a question about the new Angra single for "Lisbon". One of the B-Sides is an acoustic version of "Make Believe". Can someone confirm for me whether this is a live recording from an acoustic show, or whether it's the original recording from "Holy Land" with an acoustic guitar track substituted for the electric guitar (like The Acoustic Remix of "I Dream In Infrared" by Queensryche)? I'd really appreciate some feedback... if someone can either post to the Jam or e-mail me privately, I'd be very grateful. Thanks!

well, actually, have you noticed how the playstation CD-ROMS are black? That's for piracy protection. You can still make copies of the games, but the playstation will not recognize them unless they are the black variety, which I think are not available to the public. If you have a playstation emulator on your computer, then you might be able to get around this little problem, but you can't play copied games on a playstation (my friend has already tried).

not on a regular playstation, but you can get a mod chip installed (or install it yourself) for like $15-20 which prevents it from checking the copy protection and that way you can play copied games, foreign games, and homemade games on it. your first trip to blockbuster more than pays for the chip :) i don't have one in mine or anything, just passing along information for the curious. Wow. Here's some encouraging (*gag*) news about the entertainment industry. Forbes just recently it's list of top earning entertainers for '98.

Included in the top 40 are the following musicians...... 9. Rolling Stones 57.0 Mil. 10. Master P 56.5 Mil. 12. Celine Dion 55.5 Mil. 14. Garth Brooks 54.0 Mil. 15. Sean (Puffy) Combs 53.5 Mil. 20. Spice Girls 49.0 Mil. 36. Will Smith 34.0 Mil. 38. *etallica 32.0 Mil. 40. Dream Theater 30.7 Mil........ Oh hell, just kidding about that last one. I WISH though!

I must add that it's really nice to see so many of those nice rapper boys up there. ;-)

Oh by the way.... Jerry Seinfeld was #1 with 225.0 Mil.

Odd bit..... Howard Stern wasn't in the top 40!? That seems really surprising to me.

Hello everyone, I know this is probably old news, but did anyone go to the Deep Purple/Dream Theater concert in LA on August 31? If you did, please email me. I guess I should explain that I met DT at Guitar Center before the show (but didn't go to the concert), went around and told everyone how utterly awesome the guys were, and hence wound up with an assignment for a DT article in my school newspaper. Sorry if my motives aren't pure, but I really would appreciate any comments anyone might have on the concert. (A set list would also be very nice.) Please help me enlighten the herd of sheep-like ignoramuses with the light that is Dream Theater...

Sigh... being a programmer, I hear this kind of stuff all the time. First of all, the computer industry is one which is evolving incredibly rapidly. When a lot of the affected code was written, the technology, software engineering practices, etc. that we have now simply didn't exist. In addition, it becomes unfeasible to replace a lot of systems because so much money was put into developing them in the first place. It's not easy to replace software that's been tested with 30+ years of real-world use with brand new, unproven code. Just ask Bill Gates. For all of his billions, he still can't build a decent operating system - nothing that measures up to some of the software that's been around for decades (such as UNIX - since the early 70's).

Secondly, the real problem isn't in whether your PC will "run". In fact, the Y2K bug has hardly anything do do with PCs. It's the legacy code written in the 60's and 70's before PCs were even invented that form the problem. The actual problem is not in the date itself, but comparing dates.

If you think it's bullshit, you should try writing software. I'm not old enough to know what it was like prior to the 80's. But I remember hacking around on an Apple ][ when I was a kid, and even then, EVERY SINGLE BYTE of space you could save meant a lot. A date of the form mmddyy is 25% smaller than a date of the form mmddyyyy, and at the time, that could make a huge difference. And this was in the 80's, not the 70's or 60's.

    > I can't help I'm worried, though.

Good, because anyone who says "it's no big deal" is full of crap. Look at the effect the Asian and Russian economies have had on the rest of the world. If Greenspan sneezes, the markets go nuts. It's not like airplanes will start falling out of the sky, or nuclear missiles will be launched at random targets, but a LOT of companies are way behind in the game, and there will likely be a HUGE economic impact.

It isn't just poorer countries either. For example, the UK, from what I've heard, is way behind the US and Canada as I know in dealing with the problem. And there are already a lot of organizations here (the City of Toronto for example) that probably aren't going to have the problem fixed in time.

BTW, the first problems will begin on 9/9/1999, not 0/0/2000...
