I agree the first one is a nice novelty to have, but it would be great

    Hey there....
I just wanted to put in a good word for Fear Factory.. I first
noticed this band at Ozzfest, not that they played.. but their video was
played on the big screen in between sets. They sounded mean.. and I
liked that. Anyways, I got the album and it kicks ass! Very heavy,
it grooves and their is some mellow stuff towards the end of the
album. Very good stuff. Pick it up!
               later, J

I can only agree here. If ya'll are into some fast ass double kick
drumming get this band. At times it almost sounds inhuman, buts its a
guy doin it. So yeah. Very heavy band, awesome speed and then of
course, the mellow stuff at the end is really cool. What I like is the
heavy guitars with melodic vocals. The singer is much stronger as a
throat damaging "growl" singer, but he pulls off some really rad
sounding vocals. Make sure you get DEmanufacture and not REmanufacture,
cuz REmanufacture is a techno/industrial whatever remix of it all. Its
cool too but if you want the band then its DEmanufacture. Or their new
one came out not to long ago as well which is also awesome. I forget
    the name though. But yeah.

Yeah, might be true, but I just think that we shouldn't spit on JS just
because it's a little different than his usual style. That would be
    quite narrow-minded (NO, I don't call anybody narrow-minded, don't get
    upset :)

Depends from which side you see it. If someone expects fireworks in the
manner of Malmsteen, Friedman or Vai in his craziest moments - no way
    he's gonna like it!
But isn't it wrong to expect from Satch and any other guitarist to SHRED
LIKE HELL on every second of his stuff? JS album emphasize much more on
the melody and mood itself. But also he shreds on many of the songs.
But don't look for "Surfing with the Alien part II" songs here!

    > Nothing wrong with that, o'course; it's just different and definitely not
    > Joe's "normal" approach to a song.

OK, but we agree that by itself it's not wrong, right? :)

    > Opinions differ, of course. Your mileage may vary.

Yeah, I think this is the main reason! :) As Joe DeAngelo said, if you
like blues and has that kind of background - this is PERFECT album!
Maybe tougher for only loud guitars fans.

Conclusion: We just CAN'T expect everybody to like and listen the same
    music we do! :)
    Differences makes the world interesting.

Agreed! Some songs on FII can't be imagined without keys. Actually
keyboards are making the whole mood on the album. Even someone might say
(not me) that FII has too much keys effects 'n sounds.
But I wouldn't go that far to say that UAGM and Metropolis would sound
same without keys! No WAY! ;)

    Ahoy,

I don't post that often, and I usually let threads go their way, but I
wanted to put in my vote for Joe Satriani's 'Crystal Planet'. There's some different
stuff on here like Ceremony and Psycho Monkey, but I liked both after listening to
them a few times. As far as my favorites, there's Up In the Sky (which Satch opened
with here in Houston... a good choice for an opener) which just kicks you in the ass,
House Full of Bullets, a great heavy blues track with some great licks, and plenty of
others that would take too much time to mention here. Besides, the song Time is
completely bad ass... jazzy in parts, heavy in parts, with a dash of Flying In a Blue
Dream at the end. I love this disc, just like I love the self-title. If you don't
already have it and are wondering whether or not to get it with all of the opinions
floating around (mine included now), just go ahead and grab it. I think it absolutely
kicks ass and really shows Joe doing some different sounds with the same great
songwriting and soloing talent that you know him by.

Upon reading recent comments on Angra's Fireworks and the latest from
Shadow Gallery- Tyranny I found myself wondering. Although I don't know
yet if Fireworks will stand the test of time, upon my first month of
listenings and on my intial listen I find it to be, by far, my favorite.
I realize this is my opinion and others don't have the same one, but the
reasons I've read for not liking it aren't that it's not a solid disc. The
reasons seem to be: it doesn't sound like Holy Land and that they've
changed their sound. Well if they put out another album which sounds like
HL then it would have been bashed for sounding the same. It looks like a
Catch 22 situation to me. It seems we're all so quick to find the flaws
in the albums, that we don't enjoy what's there...maybe we're all just
    spoiled.
In regards to Tyranny, I'll admit this album did take a couple of listens
to fully get into, but to say and sterotype this entire album as "cheesy"
is simply ludicrous. Maybe I'm just way off base, but I don't find Shadow
Gallery cheesy at all, especially after I had to endure DT's "Take Away my
Pain" off Falling Into Infinity. Sure, Shadow Gallery is not for
everybody, but like Phil said, just because it doesn't do anything for you
doesn't mean it should be completely dismissed as garbage.
So far, these two albums (and the new Helloween) are my favorites of the
year and I highly recommend all of them to anybody. Sorry if I went on
too long, but I just wanted to get that off my chest. Sometimes I wonder
why we say we like this music when the latest releases are bashed for
sounding a little different. Of course, if they were the same, people
    would complain too. go figure....

    Hiya,

cyberduke mentions adopting global standards for modern technologies. It
would be great for us consumers, but the comapnies involved won't have
anything to do with it. Take the case of DVD. Great new technology, but
to prevent people hunting around on the internet say to get the best buy
for a title, which may be cheaper in another country or continent, they
have added their zoning hardware which makes titles from different
geographical regions incompatible, thus making sure that a British
consumer must buy title X in Europe at the prices dictated by the local
cartels, ensuring their profit margins are maintained, when the price in
Asia or America for title X is 20% cheaper.

This currently happens with CDs except that the technology hasn't been
sabotaged yet. And some people like me have realised it's cheaper to
order from America (including p&p etc) than to buy in the UK.

Just a view on globalisation and market forces ;-)

    Cheers,

    Hiya,

just adding weight to the '"Crystal Planet" is Joe Satriani's worst
album for a long time' argument. I'm a big Satch fan and was extremely
disappointed with it. It seems monotonous in that there aren't as many
mood swings or tonal changes which were a trademark of earlier efforts.

    Supwitchall--
Man, I'm so happy about something that's going down here in Athens,
Georgia. The biggest rock radio station around--WPUP 103.7--is playing
some really good stuff. To make a long story short, they recently hired a
DJ named Kris Harris. He used to have a TV show here in town called "30
Minutes of Rock." It was a great show. That show got me into Fates
Warning, in fact (he played the Monument vid). Well, now that he's a DJ,
he's got his own weekly show also called "30 Minutes of Rock," which lasts
for three hours primetime Friday nights. In addition to a great weekly
Manditory Metallica segment and normal stuff like Megadeth and
Queensryche and such, he's recently played Labrynth, Hammerfall (Legacy
    of Kings--awesome), Symphony X, and...drum roll...the entire "A Pleasant
Shade of Gray" by Fates Warning. It was bloody awesome. This is much
different than, for instance, the progmetal show a friend of mine headed
up on our campus radio station last year; this is THE rock station in our
area; a hugely popular mainstream rock station! A lot of people listen to
this mutha! And what's more, Mr. Harris has just been promoted to the
head music guy of the entire station. We're suddenly hearing a lot more
Megadeth, etc. during the day. That's just so cool to me. Maybe there is
    hope after all!!!!!!!

Unification is not going to happen, no matter how many starry-eyed fortune tellers predict it will. It goes against to much of human nature. Take us for example - what would the reaction of most people on this list be if someone predicted that all music fans would get together and Bush fans would happily listen to DT's music and vice versa. Hell, a lot of people on this list *don't* want DT to become successful because they like having them as "their little secret". I'm not saying that that mentality is necessarily bad, but it is a serious roadblock to unifying anything.

Well, can you still find a turntable or an 8-track player if you needed one? Thise are both technologies that were at a peak 20-30 years ago, and are almost obsolete now, but you can still find them. Hell, most (if not all) IBM PC's still have ISA slots in them, and they were in the first PC's in 1981. The technology may change over the years, but I think as long as there is an overlap between the old and the new (and a way to connect them together), you'll never have to worry about obsolete media.

Call it three. I love Satch's self-titled album. Maybe it's because I'm not a guitar player, but I don't enjoy Satch or Vai or Petrucci or Van Halen or any of the others for the noodly bits - I enjoy them because they all really know how to craft a song. And I gotta say that some of those songs on the Satch album really stick in your head. Cool #9, If, and You're My World come to mind immediately.

Everyone else should give this album another listen. There's some really good stuff on it. -d

P.S. Tyranny kicks a whole lot of ass, too. A more detailed review will follow if I ever get around to it.

Remember when people who got their hands on this kind of thing used to start a tape tree? *sigh*

    Hi there...

Well, as I was too tired to post a review of DT's Monsters of Rock concert yesterday, so I'm doing it (sort of :) now:

The concert was awesome, they probably chose their all-time heaviest set-list, with almost all the seven-string songs. Check-out the set-list:

ACOS I ACOS II Puppies On Acid Just Let Me Breathe Under A Glass Moon Peruvian Skies (w/ Have A Cigar e Enter Sandman in the middle) Pull Me Under Caught In A Web Lie Metropolis Part 1

Highlights of the evening: - People singing all the lyrics, parts and *trying* to sing the UAGM guitar solo... :) - A new shuffle part before the words "Beneath a summer sky..." in UAGM. I don't know if they were already doing this before, but I loved it. - Mike's mistake on UAGM. :)

Well, I think that's it. I was a little disappointed 'cause the set-list didn't contain anything too different from last year's concerts, but that's OK.

On other notes, I also had the pleasure to talk to Mr. Mike Portnoy on friday (I actually had a drink with him :) and he told me some cool stuff about his new material and their brazilian concert:

    - They chose a heavier setlist to sort of match the other bands that were playing on that night, like Megadeth and Slayer.

    - LTE 2 will be done in about 10 days (or else it would be a triple CD! :). They want to remain the same "fresh" and natural sound of the first record, and there may be another improvised jam in the vein of "Three Minute Warning" .

    - His new, yet untitled project with members from Marill10n, Spock's Beard and Fates Warning will be more song oriented, with vocals, opposed to the more "shredding" (his words) concept of LTE.
