Hey, does everyone remember that Apocalyptica CD that was a bunch of
metallica songs arranged for 4 cellos? well apparently they have a new cd
out and i'm reviewing it for the radio station i work for and it rocks, i
must say. besides having more metallica songs (fade to black, one (!),
nothing else matters, for whom the bell tolls), it's got some sepultura
songs (chaos a.d. on cello! yess :), a faith no more song (from out of
nowhere), a songs by another band i don't recognize the names of the band
members of (i'm just going by the credits for each song - Domination by d.
abbott, v. abbott, p. anselmo, and r. brown?), and a few originals too. The
originals rock, these guys incorporate different time sigs and stuff and
it's pretty much prog metal on cello. anyways, i like this CD lots more than
the other one, which was a novelty but i wouldn't listen to over and over
again. this one acually sounds cool - their arrangements sound cooler imo,
they use a few effects, like distortion on a brief section of bell tolls,
etc. i'm gonna rip it all to mp3s so i can keep listening to it after i
return the cd :) so yeah. i reccommend you check it out even if you didn't
    like the first one. moop!

Last night on the Sci-Fi channel they played all 4 hours of the classic
Dune. Admittedly I haven't seen it in quite a while but I almost jumped
out of my seat when it appeared to me that Patric Stewart's character,
right before Paul's father makes a water pact with the Freeman, that he is
playing a Chapman Stick! Can any of you Dune-a-philes confirm this for me?
Sorry for the lack of DT related content.

Oh yeah, i'm also reviewing a Savatage "Turns to me" radio single. This
radio station rocks :) the radio edit sorts sucks, tho, as they tend to do.
they cut out 2 minutes worth of cool stuff and turned it into a verse/chorus
kinda thing. so in my review i'm recommending the DJ play the longer version
if he's got the time. We can only hope. moo.

I don't know. Personally I love SG, and think that the storyline of
Tyranny is pretty engaging. Now I just need to take a nice relaxed
    listen while reading the lyrics.

I suppose this would be the time for a (very) brief review of Tyranny:
First of all I'd like to say that I haven't listened to it that much yet
(I've gotten alot of CD's recently, including "The Light" by Spock's
Beard, and have been addicted to that one).

First impression: Actually, at first I didn't think "Tyranny" was as
good as the really fantastic "Carved in Stone". Yes, it was heavier
(which is cool), but CiS has some really memorable vocal harmonies and
keyboard parts that really keep my attention!

Second impression: After 3 listens or so, I'm starting to get hooked on
the new disc. Now that I've heard it a bit, some of what was lacking in
the "memorable" department has now surfaced!

    The guest bits:
First and foremost, LaBrie's guest spot on "Tyranny" is way too short,
but it is still one of the coolest parts on the CD. D.C. Cooper is (of
course) really fantastic (isn't he always?). Laura Jaeger (who is this
person?) is actually rather cool too.

Overall: Excellent progmetal disc with pretty heavy guitar, great keys,
a cool concept storyline, and some nice guest spots. Pick this one up!

    > anyone wanna buy/trade my Savatage Dead Winter Dead?

Do you consider this one cheesy as well?
If so, *WOW* - because this is one of my all-time favorite CD's (top
ten), and I think the story is amazing. Also the emotion on this disc
is unbelievable. I damn near cry when I hear "This is the Time(1990)",
and "This Isn't What We Meant" (among others!) --------ZAK
    RULES-------

BTW...... I'm not trying to be a dick. You're certainly entitled to
    your opinion.

They sounded mean.. and I liked that. Anyways, I got the album and it kicks ass! Very heavy, it grooves and their is some mellow stuff towards the end of the album. Very good stuff. Man, why is it that anyone who mentions Tempest on here it is always that "they suck". I was lucky enough to pick up both of their CDs for $4 each at Powermad. I think both of these CDs are pretty cool. "raped to the point that it sounds like modern commercial bullshit"? I don't think so... Let me have a try at it.. Celtic music with modern influences... Call it Celtic rock. A little along the lines of Tull, but not really. Personally, I think that they are misplaced on Magna Carta, tho. This isn't for everyone. If you want a taste of them, get the Tull tribute, which the members are on.

I agree. I'm surprised this Disc hasn't been mentioned on the Jam that much. The production is awesome. Best 'Thrash' CD of '98 Imo.

Actually, although "Moving Target" has just been re-released here, it's not their latest CD. Their most recent release, "Paradox" is even better (believe it or not)!

I just wanted to pipe in and say that I'm with the original poster (John J) and that he's not just some pocket radical that is so far removed from any "normal" opinion. I personally think that shadow gallery sounds like a heavy metal Celine Dion... uuuuugghhhh, that's not a good thing mind you... The jam has been a little hit and miss as far as recommendations go sometimes. I think that just kinda shows a polarity between people with different backgrounds that meet at Dream Theater's music. I'm in the camp that finds groups like Savatage and Shadow Gallery boring... so sue me.

Personally I think Spock's Beard "The Kindness of Strangers" wins the "kicked my ass the hardest award" for most pleasant suprise. The Light was ok... this is awesome!!! Second runner up... LTE, oh baby.....

What's up guys? I haven't been on the list in a LONG time and now I'm back! Thank God for companies that provide free internet access! ROCK!

Anyway, I'm a little green this year in terms of being up-to-date with my prog knowledge, so please allow me to ask a question or two for the panel...

    1. Is Devin Townsend's CD "Ocean Machine" Progressive in any way? Extensive reviews are welcome!

    2. Liquid Tension Experiment has proven to be one of the year's most surprising pickups! And now I hear of LTE2??? When is this jewel scheduled to be done/released???

    3. What's the latest on future DT releases? Is Metropolis 2 any closer to being a reality? I've heard that a live album is next? True?

    4. Where can I get "Raise the Knife" in CD form? Or if it's on the web, where?

    5. I got a Prog/Death Metal sampler from the ytsejam a couple years back (shouldn't we do this again? So many great bands I heard from those samplers!!!) and promptly lost it. But I remember being engaged by a band called Dark Tranquility. The song was "A Bolt of Blazing Gold" and I think the album was "Skydancer". At least I THINK I've got the right song. It stuck out to me because of the contrast of the male death-metal singer and female melodic vocals as well. The two polar opposites led to quite the sonic experience! I've done a little research though, and found that only a male vocalist is mentioned for that album (and that band). Does she only appear as a guest on one or two songs? Do I have the wrong band? Am I nutzo?

Well, that's about it for now! I suddenly have work to do! Later guys!

Scarred Records is proud to announce "Stained Glass". It has, in its entirety, the Dutch "unplugged" fanclub gig that DT performed this past June.

The sound quality, I kid you not, approaches soundboard quality (it's an audience boot recorded directly in front of the speakers). It's just fantastic. The sound quality by itself places it among one of the best DT boots ever. It's the special nature of the show that propels it to stellar status. =)

The show was also recorded by Kevin Shirley, and the talk before the show was that parts of it were to show up on the upcoming live album. Since then the band has decided to make the live album consist purely of the three-hour Paris gig it did soon after. Parts of this Rotterdam unplugged show will undoubtedly show up on the video and this year's fanclub CD.

The tracklist is: Intro / Speak to Me / Lifting Shadows off a Dream (new intro) / Hey You (Pink Floyd) / The Silent Man (electric version) / To Live Forever / Cover My Eyes / Another Day (w/ soprano sax) / Take Away My Pain (w/ alto sax) / Wait for Sleep / Mean Street (excerpt) / Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (Elton John) / Eve / Anna Lee / Carpe Diem / Hollow Years / Paradigm Shift (excerpt) / The Way it Used to Be / Bad (U2) / Peruvian Skies (w/ Have a Cigar and Enter Sandman excerpts) / The Silent Man (electric version) - take two / Trial of Tears

I made a quickie sampler MP3 of bits and pieces of some various songs. Here it is: http://www.geocities.com/soho/2236/rotsamp.mp3 The sound quality of the final product will be MUCH better than this MP3. I'll not go into many details, but the MP3 was constructed from two analog gens (hence the hiss) and is also subject to information loss in the conversion to the MP3 format. The final CD product I release will be an exact digital clone of the master DAT. This means no hiss and no clipping.. just pure ecstasy. =)

A quickie review of the show: Amazing. =) I haven't been able to stop listening to this show for the past few weeks now (in the car, before I go to sleep, while I eat, etc.). James' singing is extremely top-notch, and he gives me chills when he's hitting the high notes on both takes of The Silent Man (electric version). The atmosphere is extremely relaxed. Lots of joking around, etc. JP does a very cool intro as Mike's daughter Melody makes an entrance. There's a cool new outro at the end of To Live Forever (great to hear that one live again) and a spiffy new intro to LSoaD.

I'm going all out on production of this boot. I'm even enlisting the help of a pro designer who helped design part of the "Awake" liner. It'll have a multi-page, magazine-quality insert and painted discs (not stick-on labels). Nothing but the best for the best. =)

I'm not releasing this title until at least after the official live album is released, possibly even a couple weeks after that. I will be opening for pre-orders in about two weeks or so, so stay tuned to my website for further information about all that.

Also, the URL for my page is changing. Please update your bookmarks. Nick Bogovich is graciously hosting my site now (thank goodness no more Geocities). We will also be teaming up for future projects down the line, so stay tuned for those as well. =)

Take care, everybody! Ryan Whitaker Scarred Records http://dreamtheater.mit.edu/scarred
