    Greetings ye 'jamanoids.....

Two of the best new releases of the year are being slammed. I must speak up.

    CyberDuke remarked:
    >Crystal
    >Planet? IMHO, this is far, far worst Satriani albunm. And I really love
    >Satriani and have albums albums! When I first heard the title (Crystal
    >Planet) I thougth "Woow, what can this be, sounds so science-fiction!" I
    >really expected some mind-blowing new sound from Satch. And then ... :(
    >I found NONE stuff in this album that can make me become really into the
    >music. Like a cliche album done according some written Satch
    >compositionary rules. It IS Satch sound but a lousy one.

It is Satch's *trademark* sound, that tone and style that is uniquely his.
And it's this trademark tone which sounds so muffled and washed out on "Joe
Satriani". That's why I like "JS" less, and why I love "Crystal Planet" so
much; every note of every song just screams out that it's Satriani playing
    from the get-go.

    >While Joe Satriani album [ SNIP ]
    >sound SO joyful, isn't it? There's some happy mood floating
    >all aorund this album! :) Definitely an album with which you can tap,
    >sing, snap fingers, shout, jump ... :) It's just ... moody!

I find this interesting, since most of the people I've played the disc for
say (and I agree) that it's much cooler in tone than most of Joe's work,
with less instrumental fire and more smooth mellow groove. Less upbeat.
Nothing wrong with that, o'course; it's just different and definitely not
Joe's "normal" approach to a song.

Opinions differ, of course. Your mileage may vary.

Case in point: the remarks below from John J., regarding Shadow Gallery's
    "Tyranny":
    >i concur. the instrumental parts are listenable, even good. i'm sorry. i have
    >taste. i can't get past the lyircs and vocals.

I could make a cheap shot and say "yeah, poor taste", but instead I'll just
remark again that opinions differ. What burns me about this remark is that
you're assuming that because YOU don't like something, it doesn't have any
merit. Bullshit. It just doesn't have any merit *for you*.

    >anyone wanna buy/trade my Savatage Dead Winter Dead?

Somebody take him up on the offer. I hate to see *another* good album go
    unappreciated.

    Ta,
    Phil

What constitutes a song that calls for keyboards or "keyboard liquidation?"
(What is keyboard liquidation anyway?) I'm sure that a song like New
Millenium would sound a lot more different without keys than UaGM or
Metropolis would. Those songs could survive without the keyboards. New
    Millenium couldn't.

Yep I am back from the dead, I am sure you all missed my flames and
opinions, so hear goes with a recent batch of new music :)

    ANGRA 'Fireworks'
The long awaited follow up to 'Holy Land', I had very high expectations
of this. Sadly as much as I want to, I can't put this anywhere near
Angra's previous 2 releases. The songs are all well written and played
what lets it down for me is the truly awful production.
The sound and songs are quite different from 'HL', but I feel that
Angra are capable of much batter than this. Surprisingly the Japanese
only bonus track is by far the best song and sounds better than the
    other 10 songs.
    My rating 7/10

    LABYRINTH 'Return To Heaven Denied'
Italian power metalists deliver the most unexpected brilliant
2nd album. Nothing new or original, just a superb all round CD.
Power metal with a touch of prog throw in, superbly played, great lead
guitar. New vocalist a more than capable replacement for Fabio Leon, who
is now with Rhapsody. I describe them as a similar sort of band to
Stratovarius, lots of uptempo songs, but with a touch more prog.
    My rating 9.5/10

    ENCHANT 'Break'
Back with their 4th album, Enchant deliver an album similar in style
to 'Wounded', but with a heavier, slightly more rawer sound this time.
Ted Leonerd is 'singing' more this time. If you have any of the bands
other albums, you know what to expect.
Sadly I believe that the band are still with a label in the USA
so this at the moment is only available on the InsideOut label in
    Europe.
    My rating 9/10

ROYAL HUNT 'Paradox - Closing The Chapter' CD/Video
This is basically a live version of the 'Paradox' album released in
Japan only as a CD/Video boxed set. Exact same tracks as the studio
album, this was recorded on the Japanese tour. The video is superbly
shot, the sound as you would expect from Royal Hunt is awesome. An added
bonus is the two female backing vocalists are very cute :)
    My rating 10/10

spoil the enjoyment of those who are about to watch!

He also says in the message to the web site that he actually gets a director's

    Hope that clarifies things.

If you wanted adrenaline, there was a lot of it being distributed

Here's an interesting thought. (NDTC, sorry)

What is the best way to archive some stuff, keep it for the future????

Seen from perspective of distant future, or at least 20, 30 years later. For example - music: You REALLY wanna keep something and you decide, let's say, transforming some music into MP3s and put it on few CD-ROMs. Sound quality - perfect, text included in word doc., txt etc... = the history is recorded!

But the question is will the future technology be able to read all this stuff and have the ability to edit them. I know that one of the biggest problems in the fast progress of computer technology is making the new stuff compatible with the older ones. Otherwise much money is wasted. Similar to the problem of US standard of video signal. I heard that it's definitely weaker than European but replacing all your VCRs would cost ALOT and so it just stays the same (don't know for sure, don't jump in my trout for this!)

But for the future humanity definitely must find a way to globalize things, make them according one single standard. Otherwise we can't talk about unification, right?

Do you think that in year 2020 all homes will have music players on which you can play your present (let's say) "Awake" CD??? The question expands on all possible information storage devices/keepers: RealAudio, WAVs, DOCs, HTMLs... you name it!

I sincerely expect interesting thoughts/comments on this one! Don't let me down. :)

Here' s some quick comments about these two new CDs I got:

Galactic Cowboys "At the End of the Day" Well, I must say that I am dissapointed with this latest effort. I think it is a step down from the very good THTBB. For some reason, after all the hype on the jam, I tought this one would compare in style to SIYF, but it's not even close. The one it compares to the most is MF, but I like MF better. Every single song is in 4/4 (I know, there don't have to be time changes for it to be cool, but I expected some prog elements), and it's just more of the same thing. The songs are not as catchy (yet) as in previous albums, and none of them compare to songs like "Evil Twin" or "Trip on Love". There are some good songs and it's listenable, but I have to say that the variety factor has gone way down.

Shadow Gallery "Tyranny" This one, opposite to the last one, really impressed me. This CD is amazing. As many have said, if you liked Carved in Stone, you will definitely love this one. BTW, no one has mentioned (at least I haven't seen it mentioned) that James Labrie does a few lines on one song, and he sounds great. I wish he would have sung all throughout the song like D.C. Cooper did (I love this guy's voice. Does he sound this good on Royal Hunt?), but that's fine. To any of you who have their doubts about this one, give it a try, you won't regret it.
