Well, you could start off by going to some old school jazz, with the
Dave Brubeck Quartet, who really brought some odd time sigs into the
mainstream of jazz(check out Time Out and Time Further Out), you could
also check out some Chick Corea with Return To Forever, I was listening
to their Album Romantic Warrior(with Al Dimeola) and I couldn't help but
see the similarities to prog. Miles Davis after Bitches Brew also did
some of the same type of thing.
Basically, and this is the way I see it...Prog and Jazz are closely
related in that both types are based around alot of
improvisation...however, I see them different a great deal in
instrumentation, song structures, and basic "feel", for example the more
"swinging" feel in jazz. As for rock bands that tend more toward jazz, I
know these may not be prog, but I look at Blood Sweat and Tears,
Chicago(older), Tower of Power, Bruce Hornsby, and the Ben Folds Five as
having a lot of jazz influence. One thing I tend to notice, and I'd
like to see other people's opinion on this, is that for the most part,
guitar-based rock bands tend to not lean towards jazz as much as ones
with keyboards(I play neither, so it's not prejudice...hehe) Also, the
lack of horns(Another Day excluded) in prog is something else. I'd love
to find some stuff with prog bands with some horns, or orchestrations,
or something like that, is there anything like that???

One other thing, Is all of MMW's stuff like this last one?? I listened
to it a bit, and I didn't care too much for it, too much DJ type stuff
in it(record spinning and all) for my taste, I wonder if their other
stuff is better..

With all the talk of Jazz/Prog/Rock lately, I was listening to one of my
favorite Jazz bands the other day, Medeski, Martin and Wood, and I was
thinking about where to draw the line between Jazz and Prog. Some jazz
has so
many of the characteristics of good progressive music (complex beats,
intricate instrument playing). Where do you guys draw the line between
Prog
and Jazz? What groups cross that line every once in a while (either
way)?

Can PLEASE someone say if the Vai stuff from "Crossrodas" can be found on some kind of release???

How about the "Head cuttin' duel" where this awesome caprice is inlcuded! Will these tracks be included on the new boxset together with other movie music Vai played???

:)) Yo guys, not necesarilly Bulgarian ones, I just wanna know if generally pirate CDs are the same quality as the original ones? I don't plan converting but I just wanna know! Of course, it would be nice to make copies of some desired but not top priority CDs. HEck, who can think of buying some more Jethro Tull with all this new stuff coming out: LTE, LTE2, AOI, BLS, OIALT, ... :(

Geez, really? I'm talking about the MUSIC! I'm serious for God's sake! :) Tell this to your frined and he'll tell ya: "So stupid punk, you pay 15$ more just for the piece of paper?" Lemme put it more easy to you! :) What if the pirate ones are sold with original liner notes????? :)

C'mon all, just answer the simple question! Oh yeah, add magic word - PLEASE!? :) --

Latest extracts from Tony Levin's site http://www.papabear.com/tlev.htm

ROAD DIARY UPDATE - Nov. 28, Millbrook NY.

We're in the last stages of recording here with Liquid Tension. Had to stop work today for the usual photo session - there's always a band debate about those things - you know you need photos, but somehow the shoot usually ends up disrupting all work for most of the day. (I recall a Crimson day, recording THRAAK in RealWorld Studio 1995, when Robert Fripp refused to allow a photo shoot, saying we'd lose a whole day of recording. The record company insisted, assuring it would only take an hour. We let them schedule the shoot. It took all day.)

Anyway, this one went quickly, and I got some interesting shots during it. We're getting so many L.T.E. shots, we've decided to start a new photo page with thumbnails you can click on to see the full picture with captions. Dream Theater fans will certainly enjoy the photos of their group.

ROAD DIARY UPDATE - Nov. 27, Millbrook, NY

Back in Millbrook Sound with Liquid Tension, having broken for a day to eat (burp) with our families. Album is finally getting finished up - one track to go, and we'll be ready to do fixes and overdubs. Considering some January live dates, for sure one at the NAMM show in L.A.

Hello Jammers (especially the bassplayers),

I'm about to buy myself a Yamaha TRB II 6 string bass. Since the local guitarshops don't have it in stock I'll have to order it and spit out the dough before I try it out. I would GREATLY aprecciate=20 it if anyone who has any kind of experience with this axe, wrote a brief review, just stuff you like and dislike about it.

Sorry for NDTC (well maybe it's remotely connected, cause I'm gonna=20 play DT bass lines on it :-)

Thanx a ton,

Hello Ytsejammers,

Just a quick question. In the JP guitar solo on OiaL, he plays a couple of classical pieces (I think). I was able to recognize the Flight of the Bumblebee ( even with my limited knowledge of classical stuff ) , but before that he plays something else which sounds a bit like

<ASCII sound clip> daa daa daa daa daa daa daaaaa da da da daa daa da da da daaaaa ..

Does anyone know what piece this is and maybe who composed it ?

I saw Paganini mentioned in one of the last Jams. He wrote some cool licks, this dude. Imagine that with some delay and a bit of distortion !! Oh, that would be Yngwie, wouldn't it.

I'm sure that Steve Vai person would ferociously disagree, let alone dozens of other guitar players out there right now. I rather doubt rock music would be the same without him.

Try this: rip an original CD. Then burn an audio CD from the wav-files that you got. Then extract the audio data from the CD you yourself burned. Write another CD from the wav-files. Etc. After doing this 4 times, I'm not so sure you'd even understand what band is playing. Three words: jitter and CRC.

For me, three reasons stand out why I mostly avoid pirate and self-made CDs. The royalties, the booklet and THE SOUND. It's actually pretty easy to tell shit from shinola, if you're not deaf as a birch stump.

Raitz, about to get two latest Bozzio solo works and the works from Spock's Beard

Or get that new CD Burner from Phillips, hook up your regular CD player directly to it, and never lose sound quality.

Actually, I think it had more to do with the fact that he was prone to biting the heads off of live bats during his performances. I love P-dawg's work, but I found it very humorous in college - my alma mater (Grove City, in PA) is so anal, it would make 17th century Puritans pucker their asses. Anyways, when we had to study modern music, the professor didn't bother to hide her disdain for all things electric and/or modern, with maybe the exception of Michael Card (one, two, three, POWER VOMIT). She was absolutely amazed with my boy Nicholo though. I just sat there shaking my head, thinking about how if she was born 2 hundred years ago, she'd be the first in line labeling him as being in league with the devil.

I wore my Ozzy "revenge of the dove" T-shirt to class every time the opportunity arose. For those of you not familiar, it's the one where the dove bites HIS head off. Hot damn, it's great to be the only Marine in a school full of pussies.

Kansas-King Biscuit Flower Hour:From 1989 I think with Steve Morse on guitar. I guess it was from the In the Spirit of Things tour. A decent live disc. Never realized that album is a concept album.

Bummer! You bought the wrong CD! "Turn" is not a good CD. George made a major leap with his next one "Mind Over Matter". Its a major improvement. Better songs, more guitar synths. Man, just plain better. Give it a try before you give up on George.

<<<Greetings, I just recently got ahold of George Bellas' Turn of the Melenium. Though I enjoy Yngwie, I thought he had mastered the art of tasteless shred. I was wrong. Bellas can out-play Yngwie in terms of technique, and he does it every note of the CD. It's utterly BORING!!!!!!!!! Yes, it's awesome shred, but to me, there's no emotion at all. Should anyone still like to get ahold of this CD, I'll part with it for a measely $5. Be well. Matt B>>>
