have none of y'all heard caught in a web in the first riff? Right when the
guitar first comes in after the keys like 5 seconds into the song, that's
the first part of the cool band unison part of CiaW reworked a little and
put in a diff't key. Also, the first few chords by the keys are
reminiscent of the Innocence Faded outro (I might be stretching a bit here,
though). I actually haven't noticed the silent man part, but I'll look for
it. but that's all that I've noticed.

Union? Nah... I'd start with these: The Yes Album - Yesterdays - Relayer - Yessongs - Going For The One - Time And A Word - Tales From Topographic Oceans.
IMHO, The Rabin & Kaye offerings were sub-standard as Yes material went.

That would be Tales from Topographic Oceans without doubt. Union is good but in no way comparable to the old ones.

At the following web site, http://www.mindsedge.com/cgi-bin/mtv/index.cgi, you can read the letter to MTV, and sign the petition to try to get metal back on MTV. There are already 194 signatures, and considering the number of people subscribed to the YTSE JAM, i thought we could really improve that number.

Hey, I already replied to Arash personally, but I just *have* to get rid of some comments here:
Yes, get Relayer. One of my all-time-favorites. Very irritating sometimes, but incredible songs and playing. Especially Patrick Moraz is all over this album. It's a shame that it was his only work with Yes.
Get Going for the One, and if it's just for Awaken. This church organ is killing me!
Get The Yes Album, it has some nice stuff, and is the album where Yes started to show off.
And finally get Drama. Maybe the most underrated Yes album. Just because Anderson isn't singing doesn't mean it isn't a great Yes album! It's quite accessible, has great songwriting and some great playing. Not the kind of mad and crazy playing like on Relayer, but solid and groovy. No fascinating classic like CTTE or Relayer, but a lot better stuff than Tormato or some 80s albums...

Talent manifests itself in a variety of ways.
My brother is a professional drummer who has logged a couple of decades of session work. When he speaks about a drummer's talent, I listen. When I was 20 and thought I knew it all, I remember he looked up to Mr. Gadd. He was 28 at the time. Not sure but I think Steve still regarded as one of THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER session players!

You go boyeee! Prog applies to a wide range of musical genres. "Friends" is classic on my all-time favorite list! This guy has done too much to even attempt to list, but for the jazz lovers:
Check out the other stuff he's done with the other jazz greats such as Stanley Clarke, Al DiMeola, Larry Coryell, Maynard Ferguson, Eddie Gomez, Hubert Laws, Lee Ritenour, Joe Sample... The list is so long on his discography page, http://www.intrepidsoftware.com/sgadd/discog.html, he's got a link for each letter of the alphabet :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In other "SICK DRUMMER" related news, I remember someone asking a while back about recommendations for FUNK. I caught Two Ton Shoe Friday night at Berklee Performance Center. This is the Dave Dicenso now plays drums for. Some of you probably remember me mentioning how sick he was in Jon Finn's band. The parting was not on bad terms, Dave has just moved on to do his own thing now. Well, Dave blew the roof off again Friday night playing funk. Progressive and a solid groove with a fusion edge to it.
Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers came out and played a couple of tunes, then he and Dave did this dueling drummer jam. Dave showed an incredible amount of class holding back. Chad's a good drummer, I'm not slagging him at all, he had some cool cymbal stuff happenin'. Dave is fucking scary!!!! TRUST ME!! http://www.twotonshoe.com/ has some samples. They're playing some gigs this week in PA and VA:
April 8 at Grape Street April 9 at Bad Habits April 10 at Fat Tuesday's
Even if you aren't a FUNK fan, at least go check out Dave on drums. The other guys tear it up too! If you like that driving bass beat, with plenty 'o slappin, it's there. The guitarists have plenty of groove. Just fucking go and enjoy it :))) You may even find yourself wanting to move your feet!
BYE!
The best songs on Union are really composed and performed by what was called Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe.
So before Union, I would recommend the first ABWH album. It's a very good Yes album. ;o)
On the subject of Remastering:
I think that sometimes it's a money making issue, just another way to get you to purchase. Are there any Black Crowes fans out there? They have re-released their entire catalog as remasters with additional tracks. These were fairly recent recordings! What are they saying? They screwed up the first time?! I don't know who's responsible for those re-releases, but it's pretty cheap and cheesy...
Of course the other great rip off in practice today is to release a "greatist hits" disc, and add one or two new songs. Great way to stick it to your long time fans who already have all of your other recording. Make them buy a disc for just 2 songs.
I guess The Black Crowes combined both techniques, re-master the disc AND add a new song or two.
My favorite trick is when a band releases a boxed set with all the hits, some not so big hits, unreleased tunes and some "new" songs. Generally speaking, the amount of new and unreleased songs could fit on a single disc... which makes you question why the band wouldn't throw together a compilation for those songs and release them outside the boxed set. This would make the boxed set cost less and be less of a target for diehard fans that would only buy the thing for the unreleased and new songs. Just my opinion. === *Trent
You ought to do your homework. Think influential singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer from the 70's through today. If I tried to list half the projects with which he has been involved, I would have a jam unto myself. Go to www.allmusic.com and look him up. You'll be glad you did. If you want suggestions on what solo material to start with, let me know. I'm always glad to share my vast intellect. Damn, I'm modest.
As a quick reply to the bovine deity: >i believe he's (Sean Malone) been on something like 14 cds total? not >sure but its a lot :) moo.
Well, I guess I'm just the master of understatement, then, you think? :) And is it just me, or do a lot of these "supergroups" sound like they would not work well together at all? There are many good musicians, but you just can't stick them together like a mismatched jigsaw puzzle and force them to fit. Some of those group combinations would be nightmares. But don't let me influence your opinions. :)
Jordan Rudess :
Well, with Falling Into Infinity, the band definitely had a slant towards making it a little more commercial. With this album, the slant is trying to make it as musical and cool as possible. And by "cool" I don't mean heavy necessarily or anything other than we just want to give the fans and ourselves the most musical, cool experience we can think of. There's going to be some mellow things, some really gentle things and there's going to be some amazingly heavy and progressive things. We're not limited by thinking that we have to produce this particular kind of commercialism for the record company. I think the record company realizes there are a lot of Dream Theater fans out there who want to hear Dream Theater.
Which of the live tracks do you really like on the KTA albums? You might want to let the answer to that question help determine which album you buy next.
If you want my recommendation, I say get Relayer, The Yes Album, and Going for the One. After those, you can try Yessongs (live), Drama (different singer), 90125 (Trevor Rabin on guitar), and "Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe" (almost a Yes album).
> Which other Yes albums are a must have ?
All of them! Well, if you're not a die-hard fan like me, then I'd say the "must-have" albums are Close to the Edge and Fragile; and to a lesser extent, Relayer and Going for the One.
> What about "Union" ?
I would recommend that you put that album at the very end of your list of Yes albums to buy, along with Open Your Eyes. :)
