MY POINT ::sigh:: was.. that certain types of arguements like the one used
by "the enlightened jammer" can be used to defend even no-talent hacks like
the ones I mentioned. That the arguement travels little distance towards
proving any kind of worth. For example; people say in defending other types
of music:
RAP - "you just cant feel the groove" or " you dont know what its like in
the hood!"
COUNTRY - " you just dont get the subtlety of quiet, beautiful music"
REGGAE - "You just aren't high enough, MON!" (I'm exaggerating here.... )
and
PROG - "you just don't comprehend the intricasies and emotional impact"
Its not that I dont comprened the intracisies, or appreciate the subtlety,
or cant feel the groove its just that I DONT LIKE IT! What I dont like also
is when people push off a person's opinion of what they like or dislike as a
failure on their part.

not at all.... you're pulling that one out of your own puddin' ass. I was
just saying that just because I dont like something doesnt mean I dont
comprehend it. What my comparison was trying to suggest is that according to
the "enlightened jammer" if you dont like Brittney Spears it might be
because you haven't taken the time to fully comprehend the intraciasies and
emotional impact that she conveys through her music, and the way she wiggles
her ass. She has a very intricate way of wiggling her ass that I just dont
think you've spent enough time watching. You've totally dismissed her art
based on just a few minutes of watching her ass wiggle I bet! I bet if you
would just keep watching her ass you'd eventually start to notice that there
are lots of subtle emotions there that are lost on the average butt watcher.
She's got a very prog way off wiggling. Sometimes she can have her cheeks
moving in odd time (instant prog credibility). One cheek is wiggling in 5
the other in 7. And its not like she's just started on the scene, she's been
wiggling her ass as an indie for years. She's hardcore into the wiggle scene
and you just think because you're just now hearing of her that she's new to
the ass wiggling?!?! I say she's sold out... wiggling for the majors. I
liked her better when she was ass wiggling on her own independent releases,
much more emotional stuff. Check out her earlier releases "This Way That
Way" or her debut stunner "My First Little Wiggle for You".

I have to say that I'm a bit surprised at the response my post got...
I only mentioned the camaro thing as an example of the point I was trying
to make, not as a statement about the relative superiority of certain
types of cars (FYE: I'd NEVER own a camaro).
I'll refrain from analogies in the future. Sorry from any trouble this
may have caused to those of us who thought this was a mailing list that
has nothing to do with cars in the first place.

I know this has been asked a few times on the jam a while back, but i was wondering, because not too much good DTC has been on the jam in a while: where did each of you first hear of Dream Theater and when? I think itd be cool to see the different answers. FYI: I first heard of them on the radio in New York in 1990 and started reading about them in guitar mags soon after. Just post ur responses on the Jam and id be cool to see where everyone comes from with this subject.

nothing wrong with calling it progressive. in fact, that's what i say when peopel ask me to describe Death - Progressive Death Metal. Lots of odd time signatures, tempo changes, meter changes, interesting riffs (i.e. not just power chords). in fact that's someting i discovered lately - i sat down and tried to learn some songs off of Sound of Perseverance and i was amazed at the riffs - i would never think of stuff like that. Maybe it's simple to someone who knows more theory than i but to me it seems totally strange. hehe. Besides, chuck schuldiner and, well, all of their drummers, kick major ass :) so yeah, i would say pick up Sound of Perseverance, followed by Human. If i remember correctly, Sean Reinert played drums on Human... after that, get Symbolic, which has Gene Hoglan on drums. moo.

well none of these bands are as technical as death but definately check them out (via mp3 or other audio device) if you are interested.
-Atheist (all around intelligent) -Opeth (same as above with intermingled clean vocals) -Dark Tranquility (perhaps not that technical, but chock full of changes and very melodic) -Nocturnus (technical, lyrics ok) -Arcturus (highly recomended) -Covenant (pretty technical musically, lyrics aren't bad) -Ved Buens Ende (very different?!? can't really describe...)

"pvoc -N2048 -T2.0 -Ye:\mishoe-seg.wav -0e:\mishoe-seg-stretch.wav"
will stretch e:\mishoe-seg.wav to twice the length without affecting the picth, and place the result in e:\mishoe-seg-stretch.wav. Excellent tool for transcribing, for instance!
