How did I get into them?

Yul Brenner came to me in a dream, surrounded by a glowing yellow light (not
unlike the color of urine), and admonished me to stop smoking. Standing
there, bathed in his golden glow, in his Persian silks, he said to me, "You
really should stop that shit, kiddo. It'll kill you. Hell, look at my
friggin' head!" Then he stood there and gave me that glare that he used to
give, you know, the one that'd curdle milk and make all his concubine's kids
run screaming for their very lives? Yeah, that one. And the background music
    happened to be "Lie."

    So I'm still smoking.

After almost Passing Over Josh Rasiel's post, but reading it anyway, I thought I'd reminisce. I remember being home for October break after Awake was released and buying it. I remember changing the process name on the vax system to "I got Awake Over Da Break" and only a few ppl. understood. I remember this was _just_ before I joined the jam. I wonder if the Vincent- Soulstlr guy who was friends with Chad - Rainbird from bitnet masrelay (pre-irc) is still on the list. They were the ones who told me to join the list (you can blame them if you want :)... I had I&W and had no idea there was an album before it, or that Awake was being written, etc... Anyway, fast forward a bit and I was back home on LI for winter break or something.. and I always used to check the listening stations, cause sometimes they had stuff to check out.. so I saw they had Awake and I listened and listened, and was happy, cause my cd player was back at school. I got home kind of late that night and everyone was wondering what happened to me. It was fun. That doesn't answer the question of how I first found DT,either you've heard my story before, or e-mail me and I'll tell you, or check out my web page (though outdated) at www.li.net/~wisha Sorry this post is a little incoherent. Going to see NEIL YOUNG tonight (@MSG) (tonight's the night) and I'm quite happy. If anyone else is going, let me know, or find me or something- gonna be good. Gotta go back to work.... -Rachel

I know that we've already had far too many of these...but what the hell?

I was at a friend's playing computer, and he put on Awake in the background. Without knowing, I started airdrumming to Erotomania...which nearly broke my arms :) Anyway, I just sort of thought to myself to remember to ask my friend what the music was and then went back to the computer. Then, all of a sudden, my friend asked all of us (we were 6-8 guys playing network) to be quiet and listen to the JP's guitar-solo (the one at 5:05-5:25) and then i was sold!

I also had a more recent experience with DT...wanna hear??? Sure you do! My mom just told me that she had just washed my DT-T-shirt, but she couldn't remember the name (Dreamtheater) so she went MOM: "I just washed your ...whatsit...Megadeth-T-Shirt" ME: "It's Dreamtheater, mom" MOM: "Sure...Dreamtheater...Megadeth...what's the difference anyway?" WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?!?!?!?!? If she wasn't my mom, i don't know what i'd have done...

    well...that's it. Have fun now.

OK, since we're ALL talking about it...

A couple of friends of mine got me into Rush in spring 1994. I became a HUGE Rush fan and bought nearly 20 albums over the summer. (Kinda expensive for a high school student with no big income!) I also subscribed to The National Midnight Star, the Rush Internet mailing list. (Do y'all need the description? I bet 80% of you are subscribed to TNMS now...)

Anyway, in spring 1995, I had read a lot about a lot of different bands, from Queensryche to Pink Floyd to Dream Theater. I was on vacation in San Diego and saw two books of sheet music for DT music. (I believe they were Awake and I&W, and piano/vocal sheet music as opposed to tab, but everyone tells me that a published piano/vocal score doesn't exist <g>.) The cover art looked kinda cool, as did the song titles, and I figured I should pick up the CD someday. A few weeks later, I found Awake at a local Best Buy, and bought it as a spur-of-the-moment purchase.

I put it on in the background, caught the drum intro to 6:00, and thought, "These guys are pretty cool!" Within a week, I couldn't put the CD down. I remember long car trips that year where I would listen to Awake on repeat; I remember taking the CD to school and listening throughout study halls (and classes? <g>) To this day, Awake is my favorite CD in my 150+ disc collection. It's SO disheartening to see my favorite CD in the $3.99 bin at record stores, but I suppose that's what I get for being a progrock fan!

Speaking of the discount bins: Found two copies of Rudess-Morgenstein Project for $5.99, a few copies of King's X "Dogman" for $2.99, and one of their self-titled album for $3.99, at the local Tower Records. Unfortunately, they were all cut-outs. The notch cut out of the case indicates that the artist gets NO money for the CD, correct? The discs were reported as "destroyed" to the artist, correct?

I bought two King's X discs to try to convert some of my friends. (My goal is to get a couple of friends to go out and purchase more of their albums, therefore using the cut-out CD as a "marketing" item.) If the artists DO in fact receive royalties, I'll try to pick up the RPM discs for any of you that want them. Otherwise, buy a legit copy so that Jordan & Rod can earn *something* this year... :)

This brings to mind an interesting point... Does looks/image really effect the music? I don't have the faintest idea what Britney's music sounds like, but since she's supposedly so attractive, some people accuse her of being only a pretty face. But what if she wasn't so attractive? It's quite possible that she could release the same music, and be taken much more seriously, just because she wasn't attractive. It's an ironic paradox. (But I'm not saying that Britney IS good, I've never heard her.)

Let's just suppose that Aretha Franklin and Shania Twain both have music that is equal in artistic value. They both had problems/benefits with their careers based on their appearence (but for opposite reasons).

I guess the real test is time. If music can be respected years after the marketing, hype, trend and looks of the artist are gone, then it must have been good music.

    just rambling, BH

I was at the Ice Age show on last Saturday and I'm glad to see others on this mailing list were there as well. Well, Ice Age was awesome! I was completely blown away from the first song on. Never was there a dull moment throughout their flawless performance. As stated before, they opened with Perpetual Child(formally known as The Great Divide), great song! They also played Sleepwalker(the new sound clip just added to their website), an incredible instrumental entitled Spare Chicken Parts, the epic song Ice Age and a few other songs as well. Josh Pincus was just amazing as he sang and played his busy keyboards riffs and solos. Jimmy Pappas is IMO the "next" guitarist to watch for. The rhythm section is also just outstanding and we were treated to a drum solo that even had a few brothers in the audience dancing. Bottom line GREAT SHOW and I cant wait till the next one!

    Later, Ricky C!

It was nice to see a Magna Carta band that actually plays live gigs. The only problem was that the sound in the venue sucked. You couldn't hear the guitar at all, even if you were on the guitarist's side. Even with those problems, Ice Age kicked major ass. They opened with "The Great Divide," the song that's on the Powermad compilation. Their music is definitely heavily influenced by DT, especially the keyboard and guitar. The drummer uses just one bass drum but has the peddle for the double bass effect (sorry, I ain't a musician, so I don't know what it's called). The opening song impressed me as did the instrumental they played a few songs later. Within the instrumental (I do not know any more song titles) came a kick ass drum solo that would rival MP's or even Carl Palmer's (or for a more obscure drummer, Rich Behrends from Mastermind, who blew me away with his solo at Powermad). The! ! ! vocalist, who does double duty on keyboards and is a very busy man throughout the show, sounds just like Dennis DeYoung from Styx. The opening band for the show was pretty interesting. It was called the Jim Walsh Band (or something like that) and was comprised of vocals, two acoustic guitarists, a really cute female bassist and a drummer who seemed to be out of place and would probably fit in better in a heavy metal band. The double acoustic and no electric set up provided some interesting sounds, but all of the songs sounded the same to me. Like Jim, I received the promo disc from One, and I was very impressed also. As a matter of fact, I think I've listened to the tape about 10 times already. Take care, Adam Perkowsky (a.k.a. I would recommend a disc by Michael Schenker. It's called "Thank You". It's all acoustic, nobody but Michael (though there are overdubs), and covers many different styles and moods. Just ignore the speaking part at the end. I do. :)

Also get anything with Al DiMeola. He's good.
