I posted a message about Bill Dickens before. An awesome bass player. I
went down to Bass Alone in San Diego and got to get my hands on one and it
was an awesome experience. They didnt have the 7 or 9 string bass but the
Conklin 6 string was just awesome. Oh and the tuning on a 7 string is the
same as a 6 except for the lower F#. It kills the yamaha TRB 6 II bass I
own now. Also in musicians freind I noticed John Myung's bass being sold
now. Anyone play it yet? I am curious to see how good it is since it is less
expensive. Also Happy Birthday to Mike Portnoy.

Hi all,
After missing about 2000 digests, I'm finally back on
the Jam. Glad to see nothing's changed. :-P
(My first post was a reply to Hairball, for you old-timers).
"Bernard, Chris" asks for:
> instrumental(preferably solo), acoustic guitar works
Adrian Legg! I saw him open for G3 at Valley Forge - amazing!
The bastard messes with his tuning pegs in the middle
of songs. Check out "Paddy Goes To Nashville" from
"Mrs. Crowe's Blue Waltz", but resist the temptation
to smash your guitar against the wall.
My first DT experience: a friend almost literally forced
me to go see them play in Philly in '93. The first note I
ever heard from them was when they started playing.
I still haven't recovered.

Well, seeing that this is my first post, I thought this would be a good topic to start with. I had thought that 90's rock was dead; so I spent much of my time listening to old Rush, Kansas, and Yes. Some guy (to whom I will be eternally grateful:-) raved on DT on the Rush mailing list. I figured that if they were held up in the same light as Rush, they had to be nominally decent. I got ACoS at a used cd store; the title track was ok, but I was really impressed by the covers. So I decided to get "Once In A LiveTime". It was just spectacular!!! I was especially blown away by the JP guitar solo (I used to think no one could touch Lifeson:-) Since then I have managed to acquire a DT bootleg, and I plan on buying everything I can buy them.
This list has also opend me up to the world of Prog Metal: Symphany X, Shadow Gallery, Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, etc. Thanks!

Hey everyone,
This week's "From the Vaults" selection at Lines in the Sand
is the import, "InstruMENTAL".
InstruMENTAL contains demos of material which ended up on
When Dream And Day Unite in some form or another. However,
as the title suggests, Dream Theater did not have a vocalist at
the time the demos were recorded. They were in the process of
looking for one.
Anyways, you can find MP3s from InstruMENTAL at Lines in the
Sand. The URL is below.
Take care,
Bogie

I tried to stay away from this one, but I guess I'll tell my intriguing litle story. I'm sure you're all dyin to hear it: Well I was listening to a lot of classic rock stuff just a little over a year agoand gettin a little bored with i, then one day I got my first issue of Guitar. Inside there was a transcription of BMS, I was about to get a 5string bass, so I noticed that the song used a low B, then looked at it closer and realized some cool stuff ( the 3/4, 7/8, 3/4, 4/4 section). Then i looked through the rest of the magazine and saw them named best band in the reader's poll, continued on and saw JP's top 10 favorite albums, noticed some cool stuff i was already into like Rush and SRV. All this made me curios enough to go out and buy FII, it slowly grew on me, saw their show in Philly last may and i was hooked. Now i'm a big fan. The End.

>ironic paradox. (But I'm not saying that Britney IS >good, I've never heard her.)
Actually, as I mentioned before, Britney was in the Mickey Mouse Club. Basically her entrance into the MMC was likely based upon looks >and< talent. Alot of her success is likely based upon association of this. She's not the only Disney sponsored siren to hit it big in the solo department. Jennifer Love Hewitt spawned from Kids Incorporated and made like two or three not as successful solo albums but went on to enjoy a lucrative acting career.
It's not that Britney sucks, her music isn't that bad. It's generally what wakes me up in the morning. (heh, stupid KZDX plays it at the same time every morning.) It sure beats when I woke up to Pretty Fly for a White Guy every day.
So, in short, had not Britney gotten her big break on the MMC, even with her looks, I don't think she would have had such an easy shot at the Billboard charts. But those Disney bitches are somewhat talented, I suppose. -- KorgX3 is playing golf in his pants.

>recommendations, please. Style isn't necessarily important -- Classical, >Spanish/Flamenco, etc... doesn't matter at this point, i wanna try it all.
Hmmmm... *probes his CD collection* Although not even completely acoustic (mostly acoustic soloing over keys and backing guitars), I recommend Marty Friedman's two albums Scenes and Introduction. Also, basically anything by Michael Hedges, Jesse Cook, Adrian Legg, and Billy McLaughlin. And even though some people will disagree, I recommend Craig Chaquico's "Once in a Blue Universe." Save that one for last or something though... It's alright, but nothing astonishing. :)
Friedman's two are probably the most accessible as far as laid back acoustic works go, but to me, Hedges was (sniff) THE definitive modern solo acoustic guitar player. Jesse Cook's style is Spanish/Flamenco/Gypsy sounding stuff, and Legg and McLaughlin's styles somewhat mimic Hedges, although Legg's has more of a cajun flavor to it. Chaquico, well, he was the guitar player for Starship, so it's basically acoustic pop.
And while I'm here... I just kiped a CD-R my friend was made by some fellow at school today, but there's no labeling on the disc and the guy didn't tell him who it was, but there is a really cool Speed Metal version of Mr. Sandman on it. heh. I'm sure someone here knows who it is. I'm tempted to say Stratovarius or Helloween, but I can't say for sure. Thanks in advance! -- KorgX3 thinks it's time to go golfing again.

>< This brings to mind an interesting point...Does looks/image really effect the music? I don't have the faintest idea what Britney's music sounds like, but since she's supposedly so attractive, some people accuse her of being only a pretty face. But what if she wasn't so attractive? It's quite possible that she could release the same music, and be taken much more seriously, just because she wasn't attractive. ><
No it's not. If her music were different, original, creative, any of those, then that's a different story, but she's doing (white) r&b, if that's such a thing, and if you don't have the perfect body and the perfect face, then no record exec will give your music a listen.
>< "Jack Starr, ex-Virgin Steele guitarist, is now releasing the "Conspiratos Santos" EP. Vocalist is Chris Collins (Majesty)." Any of you heard anything else about this? ><
I don't ever want to hear anything w/Chris Collins.

Well, most of my recommendations come from the world of jazz, especially Latin Jazz.... If you're looking for any acoustic guitar, the first person I always mention first is Charlie Byrd, the guy ONLY plays acoustic, and is phenomenal. He can play Latin, straight ahead jazz, standards, you name it. He has great technique, and has a great touch and feel to his guitar. I highly recommend him. Another couple of Brazilian guys I might mention is Laurindo Almeida and Joao Gilberto. Both did alot of Bossa Nova recordings with Stan Getz(a tenor saxophonist), as did Byrd. All three are some of the most respected in their field. Also, here's a guitarist many wouldn't think of, but Andy Summers(of Police fame) has some really fine stuff out there, he's drifted more into the jazz world as the years have gone by. I got this cd of him with John Etheridge, all acoustic guitar, and they really do some nice things together. hmm...who else?? Well, this isn't jazz but Dave Matthews has some good stuff out there, I really like the album he did with Tim Reynolds, though I miss the full dave matthews band. It's got some new material mixed with older matthews material, certainly worth a buy if you're into either acoustic guitar or dave matthews. Hope you like some of these...:)

I don't know much about actually making music - I can't play any instruments. But I know what I like and I like DT, as well as Metallica and Dire Straits. I was just wondering whether anyone could help me with a nagging question I've had for ages.
I don't know whether virtually every albulm by any band these days is recorded with drum machines or not, but I was wondering whether I&W was recorded with the use of a drum machine? Of all the DT albulms I've heard (all of the albulms they've produced), I&W sounds most like it has a drum machine.

I think I have the most original first-time-dt. The first thing I heard was my friends copy of Live at the Marquee! That's rigth the first thing we noticed was the rather 80's-solo from Petrucci on Surrounded. But all in all it was good stuff. Later on he bought A Change of Seasons, no don't tell nobody dislikes DT because of that song. It was a turning point for us. Since he was going to work I listened to it first an was high on the world when i told him about The Darkest of Winters. You know what I mean. A few weeks later I bought Awake and When Dream and Day Unite. Needless to say Awake won. Later on FII and OiaLtime. Anybody out who was won over by OaiL? /lurking's gone to far. . . . prepare to be answered.
