Hiya Jon..long time no chat!
Wow Power of Omens. Eyes of the Oracle is an incredible freshman cd from
this outfit. It's full of syncopated drumming, some wonderful touches of
spanish guitar thrown in here and there throuhg out some songs and yes a
singer that has been compared to an early Geoff Tate. They have a 17 +
minute epic "Test of Wills" that is an amazing masterpiece. Ask me to
compare it to other bands as a reference and I can't. Maybe others here
can do so. I have often heard this CD referred to as being technical
progressive metal. Thisis one of my fave discs of 1998. I hope others
here have more to contribute.
Cheers,

Oh, no! I've sinned!
Let's face it; I fucked up!
Yes, it is Right; The Karn Evil 9 is in the Brain Salad Surgery!
(I'm hearing the scary sounds of screams, no, actually its some song by
some boys band! And, No! They are all super cute! And they are all
cannot sing; but could dance(?) and wiggle so much! AAAAARGHHH! This
must be the gate of HELL!)
So, to repent, and bath my self again in the light of Being; I will tell
you a story=D6
When ELP made Tarkus, actually it was a kind of concept album; that is
quite a cool thing back then. Another cool thing is the black disk that
you could put sounds and play it again and again and again=D6And the cove=
r
are usually bathed in flying colour (and artworks....)
Anyway, I have that old thing .....:-)
And in it we could see the whole story of Tarkus.
It was like; this ERUPTION (the first song) brought this egg to hatch;
so the Tarkus was born. Tarkus is a mixed up between armadillo and
tanks; fully armed with anger and ammo. With attitude; Tarkus beginning
to crush the enemy that come;the spider/squid-like tank, the Pterodactyl
tank, the Lizzard/locust tank; to pieces.
(hmm. I've been thinking about the connection between these images and
songs after Eruption; but still haven't got any clue=D6:-))
And then, come the MANTICORE ( the fifth song; after STONES OF YEARS,
ICONOCLAST, and MASS) and then, the real BATTLEFIELD began. It happened
that the Tarkus was lost from the Manticore, but do not destroyed. The
Manticore just sting the Tarkus in the eye. And then, the Tarkus
retreated to the sea.
And from the sea, the legend said that one day the AQUATARKUS would
come; and destroy the Manticore=D6
this is when the story ended.
(I'm hearing another sound now; a peacefull and warming; Ah! A band
called "Lucifer's Friends"! So this must be heaven! Thank-You God! )
*snif*. Well, anyway; there is a lot of speculation about the story. One
of it said that it was a personification of the battle between the

Jon, I've had this CD since it came out. That was about 6 months ago. I'm =
just now able to get into it. This is indeed, a very technical, almost =
inaccessible album to appreciate. It takes a little work, but damn well =

Just don't expect to totally get into it right away. There are lots of =

not that the politics of that rock band really matter to me, but (and
apologies if anyone beat me to this piece of information) has anyone
heard what Dan Quayle's slogan is for his (IMO hopeless) campaign for
the Republican presidential nomination next year?
yep....you saw this one coming, didn't you? Q2K
so....if I, and a whole heck of a lot of political commentators are
wrong and Quayle does somehow rise above the Empty Shell (George
Bush jr.) and the Princess of Precision (Liz Dole) and a whole host
of other no name GOP-sters, Queensryche might want to hook up with
the dude and catch some coattails to platinum status....
otherwise, I really really really hope that title isn't final....

OK, I got some questions.
1. Symphony X--Where to start and is there an mp3 of them anywhere? I have
been hearing a lot of stuff about these guys and CDnow has some of their
CDs but no sound clips. I want to hear somethint before I go and buy, so
point me in a good directionaand give me some good starting points.
2. On the same vein, I trust the jam's judgement and once I heard Spock's
Beard, I loved them, so can anybody recommend a good prog or prog metal
band with some great keyboard stuff and point me to an mp3 of theirs? I am
open to anything along the vein of what we listen to here, Rush, DT, ELP,
Yes, SB, any of the magna carta stuff except caliban and tempus, Genesis,
Styx, etc. etc. The info would be great.
3. rudess stuff--I ordered the video of jordan Rudess on 4/1 and haven't
even been billed or received the video. How long did it take for you guys
to get a video? On a related note, Jordan has tons of CDs for sale on his
site, and I am interested in all of his nonpiano stuff, but would like to
know if anybody has ordered them beforehand, how long did it take and which
CDs are good ones. I should know that they will all kick my ass fiercely,
but I am just trying to sort out a lot of money issues. Not that I don't
have any, but what to buy first. By the way, Jordan is not listed in
CDNow's archives and I think we should bitch to get his shit up there.
I think that is all, so if anybody has answers to those questions, fucking
clue me in, OK? Thanks.
P.S. Queen's Ryche's new album title is a bit witty, if not a bit gay, and
I hope they do produce something different, and not follow the grunge
thing. i actually thought Now Frontier wasn't terrible, but I hope they
continue to experiment.

>< 1. Symphony X--Where to start ><
The Divine Wings of Tragedy is their best album, without a doubt. Not many
people will tell you otherwise.
>< and is there an mp3 of them anywhere? ><
I'm sure there is, just search for them. I don't know of any myself. My
computer is such a piece of shit, it would take me an hour, maybe more, to
download MP3s, so I don't bother with that stuff.
>< I have been hearing a lot of stuff about these guys and CDnow has some

Stay away from CDNow, unless you have some discount or something. I've always
said the best place to buy progressive rock is www.lasercd.com. They have all
of the Symphony X albums for $15 a piece, brand new, no shipping and
handling, very fast and very reliable. You just have to e-mail them to make
sure the album you want is available. CDNow is charging, what? $20+ for
Symphony X?
So Divine Wings of Tragedy, lasercd.com, and mp3...you don't even need one.

Well, I've only listened to it a couple of times, but it's not too bad. The
singer sounds almost exactly like Tate, which is OK by me (I mean, I'd
rather hear someone sound like Tate than say, oh, Celine Dion). The music
might be a little too complicated at times. Sometimes it seems like there
are too many ideas in the songs, like the band is trying way too hard to
impress everyone with their playing capabilities. Maybe the next CD they'll
tighten up the arrangements a bit. If you like the samples you heard, you'll
probably like the CD.
I might not be the best judge of this, though, as it takes me a long time to
get into most CDs. I don't like almost any CD the first couple of times I
listen to it. Often they'll grow on me, sometimes they don't (like the new
Spock's Beard CD, which so far does not impress me like the rest of them).
Oh, Power Of Omens is supposed to play at Powermad this year. Those who
attended Powermad last year know what to think of proposed band line-ups,
but you never know. Things could be different this time... (make up your own
Powermad jokes here)
