Always a smart thing to do with technology. There is always time before
standards are settled, bugs are worked out, etc. I know first generation
DVD players have had their problems. The biggest issue with the hardware
now seems to be 16X9 Downconverting. Audio DVD won't be something for
years, esp with a technology that has a dominance of CD.

    >The hard work of those

    competing
    >to build the BEST, rather than the most economically competitive?

To tell you the truth, most people don't care about the quality. It isn't
something that they would notice or pay extra for. The companies above make
consumer gear for low prices at a quality that is acceptable to the general
public. This isn't a bad thing if there are companies that do have the
qualities that you seek. So what if these guys make cheap gear? It is the
nature of the market to have such stuff.

Me, I will probably get some good mid-fi gear eventually. I'm not really a
big stickler for sound, but I do want good equipment that will last a long
time. For the meantime, tho, my 12 year old JVC receiver will work for me.
Lost the display a couple of years ago, but I don't listen to the radio
    anymore anyways.

Cairo tourdates? Haha, good one... The only Magna Carta bands I've ever
heard going on tour were those that toured before joining up with Magna
Carta in some way or other (DT side/post projects, Tempest) or ones that do
the occasional one-off show, like Ice Age (who, for whatever reason,
interested me a lot less when I saw them at the NEARfest as opposed to
Powermad the summer earlier -- maybe it was the competition factor
(NEARfest: IQ, Solaris, Spock's Beard, etc.; Powermad: mostly derivitive
power metal bands)). Magna Carta seems to be a good label only because an
artist can get pretty much anything they want to released released on it.
    Distribution, advertisement, tour support...poor.

If any of you are at all into '70s arena rock (Deep Purple, Uriah Heep,
etc.), or even if you aren't, a good movie to watch is "Still Crazy",
recently released in the US on videocassette. It's the tale of the '90s
revival of the (fake but convincing) '70s band, Strange Fruit. The movie's
very entertaining, and, to top it all off, boasts a kickass soundtrack of
    mock-70s Strange Fruit songs.

In my point of view, this format is just a part of a revolution. IMHO, it
is not going to be a standard format.
Some guys are just going to come out with a better format, whose quality is
better, moreover, the file gonna be smaller.
I think, CD format is now standard. And it will be so for a long time.
    I must admit, that I don't have that much mp3-s. I have only 2 DT albums +
3-4 DT concert shots, some GNR, Metallica, and RATM.
    This is all.
In my point of view, if I want to listen to a new album, I will buy that.
Its a sign that you like and appreciate the band. Its a sign of that you
think the band worth it. You pay for them, because you think, they deserve
    it.

Christ, Dr. Mosh, you're a very angry, probably depressed, lonely little
man aren't you? You have nothing better to do that to piss and moan about
everything (on IRC and in this digest). Shut up and work on improving your
own shortcomings instead of pointing out everyone else's.

Leave Joe alone, let the admin of the list deal with off topic posts, and
shut up because no one cares to listen to you. Oh, and keep turning that
anger of yours inward: it's real therapeutic..

I agree with this for the most part, but I view mp3s as a good way to
experience new things without buying albums you may hate.
I for one do not have the resources to buy every album recommended to me
by friends, people on the jam, etc. However, if I can hear some mp3s
first, I may love what I hear and decide to buy the album after all. If I
hate what I hear, I will most likely delete the mp3 anyway, so no harm
    done ;)

Besides, listening to mp3s that have been sent to me over the past year or
so, I have "discovered" approximately 10 new bands I ABSOLUTELY LOVE. Of
these, I either own a CD by each or plan to own one in the near future.
These are all "non-mainstream" bands, and if it were not for mp3
distribution, I would never have heard them at all.

IMO, this is the core pro for music distribution via the net
(for bands, anyway). It helps them find new audiences.

I was wondering where that 'heavier than DT' thing came from. What the hell
is that? Snob nailed it on the head here, and the Styx similarities are
sometimes so striking as to be suspicious. I still haven't been able to
really get into this Ice Age, but I'm trying. It's gonna have to do until
September, when the new Vanden Plas comes out! Can't wait. Woohoo!

ice age is like DT? ummmm.....maybe.....in the same way that a lot of Magna
Carta bands owe something to DT.....it is, after all, all prog metal, right?

    >Now I just bought his one, and I guess it could be old news but, >this cd

    >Magna's stuff

imagine Dali's Dilemma with James Labrie on vocals rather than Matt Bradley
(don't get me wrong, i love Bradley's vocals)....and you have an idea of
what 2 or 3 mullmuzzler songs sound like....a decent album, that, even if
the songs tend to sound like Labrie singing songs by Dali's, Shadow Gallery
and Magellan, rather than any separate, coherent entity on its own.....

and even a democrat like me can laugh at a song like "beelzebubba," where
Labrie gets to yell "Slick Willie" over and over again....

Of this I am certain. But there's not a group of KoRn
fans in the world that can stand up to every member of
the Ytsejam voting for a DT video on TRL. The sudden
upswing of votes alone would put them over the top,
but to the best of my knowledge no song gets as many
votes as there are members of the 'jam. So
theoretically, if everyone on this list votes for
Buster Poindexter's "Hot Hot Hot" video, TRL will play
    it. It's a sick world.

Oh well, someone commented on Ice Age and said it sounded like DT. I
agreed, adding that IMO IA is heavier though. I dunno any Styx, so I can't
compare IA to them, but I do know DT, so what's wrong in me finding
them slightly heavier in some songs to way heavier than DT in others? Even
the very first riff of Perpetual Child is something DT would never write
