i was reading the ytsejam digest and someone brought up a good point...on MTV
theres a show called TRL (total request live) (for those who dont know) we
(DT FANS) should all get together and request a Dream Theater Video to play
on this show...i mean it would be great to get DT on MTV...maybe it would
create a buzz and the executives over there would get it into their thick
heads that all this teeny bopper crap is no good...Dream Theater deserves
more recognition...they are by far the best band out there right now...and
its sad to see that noone cares about REAL music anymore...LETS UNITE AND
    BRING DT TO MTV!!!!!!!!!!

Ice Age is clearly most influenced by Styx. I'm not sure how you can say

Why are you getting this message?

Recently Nortel Networks changed the domain name to nortelnetworks.com. As
a result of this change, mailing lists are consistently sending mail to some
of our older domain addresses. In an attempt to reduce the mail volume to
these legacy domains, we are trying to contact the administrators of
    list-servers for assistance.

    What can you do?

If you could please review your address databases and change the addresses
that have the following domain names to nortelnetworks.com:

    nt.com
    nortel.com
    nortel.ca
    bnr.ca
    bnr.co.uk
    nortel.ie
    northern.co.uk
    nortel.co.uk

    Why should you assist us?

Beginning in October we will start sending an NDR (non-delivery report) for
all messages sent to older domains. In preparing ahead of time, we can
prevent hundreds and thousands of messages from being sent to an incorrect
    address.

What if you do not find any addresses in your database?

Please disregard this message. If in future mailings you keep getting
messages from me and you are annoyed, please contact me and we can work out
    these issues one-on-one.

What if you find older Nortel Networks domains in your database?

Thank you so much for your assistance, send me an e-mail with the list of
addresses and I will forward you a Thank You Gift from Nortel Networks for
your assistance. We appreciate your help and always appreciate the
    co-operation of postmasters, mailing-list and list-server administrators.

    > MTV!!!!!!!!!!

As much as I (and, I'm sure, everybody else) appreciate your enthusiasm
about DT, there is virtually NO chance of this happening, for a multitude
of reasons. First, the obvious reason that there just aren't ENOUGH DT
fans out there to make a difference when it came to requesting a song.
You really should look at their numbers sometime - there are THOUSANDS of
requests a day for these songs on TRL. There just aren't enough of us to
make any real dent in the requests, let alone actually make enough votes
for DT to get a video played.

Secondly, I don't know about the rest of you, but I really don't WANT a
Dream Theater video played on MTV. Why? Because I don't feel that DT
videos aptly show what a great band DT really is. First of all, the
videos are (admit it) kinda boring. Secondly, they cut the songs so taht
they can be shorter. I just don't like the idea of it.

Thirdly, MTV has nothing to do with good music. We've had this discussion
before - MTV plays music for the pop generation. I, for one, DO sometimes
feel like listening to pop music - I don't see anything wrong with this
teeny-bopper stuff... unless they don't like what they're doing (in other
words, if Britney Spears really likes the music she makes, as I don't
doubt, then I don't have a problem with her making this kind of music).
But face it, MTV is not around for the masses. It's a station that is
designed for a specific demographic of person - specifically the 13-19
female group. This is also the same demographic that goes out and buys
clothes at Abercrombie & Fitch, the Gap, etc. It is also the same
demographic that thinks Ricky Martin and the Backstreet Boys are hot. Now
let's see... Somehow, I don't think that we DT listeners fit into anywhere
NEAR that demographic. MTV plays music for the pop culture, and we ain't
it. Besides, there's still a part of me that wants to be able to keep DT
to myself. I play it only for people that I think would like it. These
tend to be more mature, more intelligent people, who can appreciate music
and its many forms. Though that may sound like a mean comment to some
types of people, it's awfully true: I don't know many stupid people who
listen to anything other than pop music (or the really stupid ones who
    listen to nothing but country).

And that's all I have to say about that.

Yeah yeah yeah-- it's great to buy a CD and think that you're doing the artist a service, but the fact of the matter is that you spend $12 to $18 on a CD, and the artist only gets $2.50. Screw that. I'd rather write a check to the artist for $10, instead of paying the record distributors anywhere from $9 to $15.50 in order to give that two fifty to the artist. Now we should ask ourselves-- as one of the largest operative bodies of fans that are "capable" of acting in unison; with a collective average IQ in the triple digits-- how can we make it easier for the artists to get the corporate monkey off their backs?

the answer lies in the same direction that MP3 points out for us.

Well, I think it could be done, but I'm not sure if I want that to happen. I mean, it sounds stuck up but I kinda don't want DT to popular, for them to be consumed in huge quantities and to have poser fans at concerts that keep other fans out. At a DT concert now, it's a given that all or most of the people there love the hell out of DT. Like I said, I don't want for them to be trendy b/c that just sucks. That fits Britney Spears, but it wouldn't fit DT, IMHO. === *Trent

IceAge sound nothing like DT. The sound is very 70's influenced by bands from that era like Kansas, Journey, Styx (ooh the very same bands that influenced DT). The singer does not shout or scream, he's a dead ringer for the former Styx singer Dennis DeYoung, which is even more pleasing for me:)

BTW who the hell wants DT clones ? Not me, that's why recent releases by Pain Of Salvation and Clockwork are so refreshing, because they stay well clear of the plague like DT influences.

DT are the best so why would you want some pathetic second rate wanna-bee's ?

I gotta disagree here. That first riff on Perpetual Child is the heaviest riff on the whole album, the rest are quite mild compared to that (which isn't necessarily a bad thing.... I kinda like how IA is sorta 50% prog-metal, and 50% prog-rock). And even that riff isn't as heavy as DT's crushing riff from the Mirror intro.

And as far as whole songs go, none of IA's are as heavy as The Mirror, Lie, 6:00, CiaW, PMU, UaGM, etc.

BTW Zaphod.... I'm not trying to be a dick, just giving my opinion.

This is a quite normal 5/8. The beat (or stress) is on the first and the third note. So it goes like this

ONE two THREE four five ONE two THREE four five ....

    It is easy.

We have something like this here.

    1,2,1,2,3,12 1,2,1,2,3,1,2

This is a quite normal 7/8.

You can check out some 9/8 when listening to Surrounded. The first part of it is 9/8 (after 'She will slowly yield the light, as I awaken from the longest night' and Guitar 'solo'. Now that part is in 9/8).

So it goes like Ma'sfe'l, Akosh (which is named here as A'kos), and Kora'n O:ro:m is not Kora'n O:ro:m, but Korai O:ro:m. Anyway Kora'n has a meaning also.;)

But I was just thinking a bit.

On a Hungarian list we were talking about the Americans. They said that Americans do not know anything about Europe, they are too proud of being 'American' while in their opinion the American nation as a nation just does not exist. Of course, I was defending you guys with some 'forwarded' e-mails. One of you has written some words in Hungarian replying to my Intro, which really shocked me. Its alright that you guys welcomed me, but this guy just wrote in Hungarian. :-OOO

And now, you come up with these - not that popular - Hungarian bands. Thay are not at all popular here in Hungary! And you know about them. Amazing.

So I just told them to shut up, because some Americans really _do_ know something about Europe, and they know something about Hungary and Central-East Europe.

    Okay.

    Enough from me by now.

    Bye:

    ZZZZZ
