I must say... This CD (Manifesto For Futurism) is great!

I had heard "Whithin A Stare" on an mp3 before buying
the album. I didn't really care much for the song at first,
but when I listened to it for real I thought it was pretty
cool. The next couple of days It was impossible to get
    it out of my head...

So, I decided to get the album, as I loved the mp3 more
and more the more I listened to it. When I actually got the
disc (long story), I was a bit disappointed. I didn't like it
too much. But, just as the mp3. all it took was a few more
listens, and this disc went right up as one of my favourites.

    I bought LTE2 at the same time as D's D, and I haven't
had the time to listen to it for real yet. Every time I have
the opportunity to play music, I put on D's D...

I think the best tracks must be "Whithin A Stare" and
"Living in Fear". At leat those were the first songs I came
to love. Other good songs are "Despite The Waves",=20
"Can't You See" and "Ashen Days". I think all the songs
are great, but these are my favourites.=20

One complaint though. The verse of "Hills Of Memory"
sounds too much like a U2 song! It's a nice song, but
everytime I hear it, my brain sais U2, U2, U2...
And am I the only one hearing some DT riffs in some
of the songs? I don't have the CD here, so I can't tell
you where it is, but I swear...

Does anyone know if the new Tiles CD is good?

Had to throw in my two cents on some of this stuff...

    > It's illegal to record songs off a radio station, download them
    > off the web, copy them from a friend... All illegal methods.

Actually, I think the first is covered under the "Fair Use" law
that came about when the broadcasting industries tried to kill Sony's VCRs
in the early 80's. The courts decided that it was OK to have a copy of a
TV show on tape as long as it wasn't then used for public display or
profit. I can only assume the law applies to radio as well. Maybe not,
it's sort of a vague law...

    > Actually... as far as I know, Mike Portnoy is the only member of
    > Dream Theater who is pro-bootlegging...

Yeah, it was my understanding that JP is downright hostile toward
the idea. But since we chased the only other member of DT to be on the
'jam away in a midieval-like torch parade, Mike's the only one here, so
his opinion holds more weight. <suckup> All hail Mike! </suckup>.

That's my speil. Gotta get ready to haul ass back up to school...
have a good one, 'jammers everywhere.

Hey guys.. I am pleading with you to please discontinue discussion of this
subject. It was a topic hashed out by everyone on the jam about a year or
so ago.. to the point that I thought it was dead. To revive such a
discussion is like digging up a dead relative for one last hug...its just
    disgusting. : )
If you purchase bootlegs.. thats your business, if you sell them...well,
good luck. If you own them, enjoy them. End of story.
As for MP not minding bootlegs.. thats cool. The rest of the members of

is a mailing list devoted to discussions about Opeth.

I just thought that you might like to read this if you are a

It is not DTC void (read and you'll see why).

Subject: Opinion of a new Opeth song

    Hail,

I guess the main reason I'm writing this to divert all attention from the
extremely tedious and mind-numbing tirades against Shayne, to more fertile
    grounds, namely Opeth.

Anyway, I recently got a chance to listen to a track from "Still Life" are
here are my initial opinions of the song

    Disclaimer:

KEEP IN MIND THAT I HAVE ONLY HEARD ONE SONG OFF THE ALBUM. AS A WHOLE,
"STILL LIFE" WILL HAVE A DIFFERENT FEEL, SINCE YOU CAN'T JUDGE THE WHOLE
    ALBUM ON ONE SONG.

The songs starts off with a bang and heads right into a typical Opethian
"heavy part", complete with Mikael's awesome growls. His distorted vocals
are similar to MAYH, but it's good to see he hasn't changed something that
wasn't broken. Along with the heavy riffs are some interesting clean
melodies being played in the background. On a related note, one thing that
really struck me about this song it contains a lot of Iron Maiden-esque
    soloing.

    >From the heavy riffing comes a riff that sounds akin to a technical melody
found on a Dream Theatre release.

At the 3:00 min mark comes the first solid bit of clean singing, and I must
say that I'm mightily impressed. Mikael has improved his vocals
exponentially and I think no one will be disappointed with that fact. The
acoustic guitars have a more natural sound to them as well. One thing I
dislike with MAYH, was the very weak production for the acoustics. It's
good to see Fredman has rectified this problem.

A the 5:00 mark, comes a very different style of music that Opeth have not
used before, namely almost pure folk. Maybe Mikael's 70's prog/folk
influences are really coming to the fore here, and I have mixed reactions
about this. Firstly, although it's well performed, I swear I've heard this
melody before from somewhere. Maybe not note for note, but something
nagging me in the back of my mind about this.

6:00 brings us a soaring Opeth melody, which send chills down my spine.

    >From the 7:00 min. mark to the end of the song (9:40), the song pretty much
uses the same riffs as before. This I have a problem with, but I'll get to
    that later.

7:20, it's the Dream Theatre riff but in clean guitar style. Sounds very cool.

    Small peeves:

Barely any dual-guitar melodies. The trademark sounds from Orchid and
Morningrise may be lost forever (note: I haven't heard the rest of the album).

I didn't notice the bass guitar that much. Unlike Johan's upfront playing,
Martin doesn't seem to be using the same initiative and inventiveness.

The drums seemed awefully subdued. Unlike MAYH, with it's interesting drum
fills and such, this song seems lacking in this department. It's competant,
    but unadventurous.

On a whole, this song seems very careful and timid. It's almost like Opeth
has held back a bit. Maybe this has something to do with being on a bigger
    label?

I really dislike the fact that although the song is close to ten min. it
only feels like a 6 min. song, because of all the riff repititions, esp. at
the end. When I heard Demons of the Fall, with it's "chorus", I had a
suspition that Opeth may try to make songs more similar to the verse,
chorus, verse format. Of course, it's not exactly like that, but's it's
    something that I wonder about.

I'd say this song contains very little Morningrise influences, and I can
safetly say that it sound more like a progression from MAYH.

    Remember my disclaimer!!!!

In closing, it may seem that I dislike the song. This is in no way true. I
think the song is amazing and I really enjoy it. I use reverse-psychology a
lot when it comes to music. I convince myself that I'm going to hate an
album, because I usually love it in the end. It's weird I know, but it
    works for me.

Sorry if this seems rambling, but I wrote this in a very tired state.

    Later,

    Filip

Hey gang, Just bought Risk the other day (shh...) Here's my sypnosis- Insomnia-Weired opener definately explains the title of the album Prince of Darkness-oh my god this song has a heavy riff in it. Crush Em-You all know this, WCW, Universal Soldier 2 CRUSH EM! Breadline-Radio Friendly-sounds like something on Metallica's Load The doctor is calling-sick tune dave will be dave wanderlust-see above ecstasysee 2 lines above seven-good rockin tune Time:The Beginning-Imm hush about this one listen to it Time the End-Duke Nukem theme I think

very good CD in all Very commercial Cd, but still a good "risk" The most interesting thing is that Marty and Dave wrote most of the songs, not dave and Dave.

Dave's voice is a lot better, Jimmy seems to fit with them, he is more technical than Menza was, but NO ONE WILL EVER REPLACE NICK HE WAS CORE METAL!

In other news I went to see Motley the other night with those German fied Scorpions. We got there in the middle of the Scorps set. I rocked like a hurricane. I don't know who there drummer was, but his solo was very impressive. Very nice double bass work. Such a waste on a band like them.

Anyway the crue was everything I have been waiting 10 yrs for. Pyro, lesbians, just good ole rock and role. The high light was the 2 chicks taking off their shirts, and when the kissed, oh, i love the Crue. It was nice to hear the original shout at the devil.

    Kurt NP-Megadeth-risk heheheheheheh
