NAMM is a cool industry trade show to go to if you
are a musician or at least interested in musical
instruments, etc. You'll need to get a pass to get
into the show and some of the special performances
that always occur during this thing... Passes are
usually only available to music merchants, vendors,
etc... but there are ways to get one. ;-)

Mark, not skirting the legalities :) contends that Entropia is far less of
an album that Concrete Lake. Even to the point of being willing to part
with it for the $20 it cost me.

I think that they improved a ton in terms of songwriting on Concrete Lake.

It might be true. Well it's little childish to say "better than the
studio version", but I get his point. I know for sure Comfortbaly Numb
will have the extended guitar solo, which I love it. I don't doubt it'll
be one great live album to possess.

Yeah, like someone said a few days ago, Nightfall in Middle-Earth is
a very good concept album... I've got a question, though: what's that
in the booklet after the lyrics of the songs? Is that some part of
    The Silmarillion?

Another one: I've become really interested in Tolkien's work, and I've
been thinking about getting one of his books... Since there are a few
people here who seem to know well his work, which one would you say
I should get first? I'd be very thankful if you guys could give me
    a hand on this... :-)

    >FII flame wars again? Wasn't FII released TWO YEARS ago? Is SFAM not
    >THAT interesting to argue about? ;-)

If I remember well, this came up again when somebody said SFaM was
so good it seemed like FII had never existed... And there seems to be
a kind of an agreement here in the jam that SFaM is very good, with
a few exceptions... And as people here in the jam need to be arguing
about something all the time, the FII discussion came up again... :-)

Hey... why does almost everyone dislike FII??? Or at least have something negative
to say about it? I thought FII was one of their best CDs out since I&W!!! I really
can't think of anything not good by DT (including WDADU - yeah... I like that album,

Ugh. 5224 was more interesting than that drivel.
Doubledrive rocks nads. They should tour with Dream Theater. (hey, a
    guy can wish).

Dream Theater needs to play Machine Messiah on the tour. It is the
only way I can possibly orgasm during the concert, aside from actual
    sex.

Oh, and I'm working on gathering material for the SFAM movie... made up
completely of clips from other movies and music videos. I'm going to
start with Dance Of Eternit,y and work from there if it works. I
should have something to give to Mike when they hit Portland (you guys
better hit Portland, or no treat for you.)

    Matt out.

The best places to start are undoubtedly: The Hobbit, or The Lord of the
Rings (3 volumes). These are his most famous, and most accessible works. The
Hobbit is a prequel to LOTR and if you can put up with the child-like tone
(it's a children's book) then I recommend reading it first. Things in LOTR
will make more sense, and at times there are things which are supposed to
evoke memories in the reader from the Hobbit, soo... LOTR is much more
adult, so don't get discouraged if the hobbit isn't your thing. Tolkien rules.

    Hey Jammers,
In response to a recent post about a Band of one of the jammers are there
any other jammers oiut there who have a band that has a website to hear
clips from? I usually like what I hear from the websites that are listed
and I think this is a great forum for us as prog and "heavier" music
listeners to support each others bands as we support the DT's of the
world also. i'm sure many of you know how hard it is to make it as a band
these days so if we all check out each other's sites and maybe even get
some CD's of some of the bands that would be great... shit, maybe we can
even compile a Jammer band CD or something crazy like that... who
knows... anyway just my thoughts... I think you all should check out the
"Theater of Pain" site also.. it's pretty cool... My site isn't that cool
but I am not super good at html and front page express sucks but it is
free!!! You can check out my band "Many Deceived" at

let's get prog and stuff to more people shall we... ;)

Well, as long as it's not Tiles. They had their chance, but
I didn't see many people being won over by them.
Mastermind sounds like a good choice.

. and talking about tours with 3 bands on the bill, this
years Freedom Call/Edguy/Angra lineup was excellent.
Those of you in Germany etc have had the pleasure of
seeing a lineup of Glen Hughes (The voice of Rock),
MSG and Thin Lizzy (tour still in progress). Some of
us don't like to spoil old memories though :-)

    Europeans have Sonata Arctica/Rhapsody/Strato
to look forward to in the Spring. Call me a sucker
for punishment, but I plan to catch about 4 or 5
    shows on that tour :-))

There's also some rumours of a NWOBHM tour
featuring Angelwitch (ROFL), Praying Mantis (OK)
and Tank (who - don't remember them). There's
a tentative date down for a gig in London in January,
but they're threatening to do a full European Tour.

Some bands should realize that there time has past
and leave it be. I saw the re-formed Black Sabbath
last Sunday for the first time in over 20 years, but
it was nothing special. I know that the younger
generation :-)) like to say that they've seen the
greats, but its not the same. Now the Who are at
it too - playing 2 gigs down the road from me in
Shepherds Bush before Christmas. Where will it
    end?

P.S. Graham (Borland) I think that there is a very
strong likelihood that I'll be going to all the DT
    shows in the UK.

Side note- recent Cd purchaces include Rush - 2112 and Fates Warning -
APSOG, as well as Yes - Relayer. I love the latter two, but I'm having a
rough time getting into Rush's pre-Permanent Waves material. I think you

maye a few more spins will help change my opinion.

I have a CD player from Phillips-Magnavox with 25 second ESP. In the year
or so that I've had it, it has not skipped on me once. It's been very
reliable. It also comes with a car kit as well. Better yet it's decently
    priced at Target.

Hello sisters and brothers. I just had a relatively
simple idea (which brings with it a rather complex
level of implementation) that we should come up with a
way to organize ourselves into regional factions with
which we could organize parties and group
concert-going. During the FII tour, I met up with a
few Oregon 'jammers (Jim, Zack, and Matt) for the
Portland, OR show and it was a total blast being able
to hang out with and talk to people who share the same
love of DT that I do. It would be really cool if
there were an established way that 'jammers could
communicate separately with other 'jammers (aside from
the usual ytsejam post of "who's going to the
*whatever* show) in our respective areas so that when
certain "Ytse-friendly" bands came to town, we could
arrange to get together before or after the show to
have lengthy discussions about what we all experienced
and maybe even make some new friends. Maybe a new
"regional contacts" area for UACM? Just a thought.

    -Greg

    Temple of the Jam:

For those of you looking to sink your teeth into a ball of razor-blades, and
you HAVE all of the Meshuggah albums already (*grin*) let me introduce you
    to Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects.

He's one of the guitarists for Meshuggah and that's the name of his band.
Album title is "Sol Niger Within". This album is as intense as any
Meshuggah album (all the f*cked up rhythms are there), but with a slight
twist. He adds more variety to each track. From computer modulation to
multiple vocalists, it keeps the listener's attention. (If you felt
Chaosphere lacked variety, check this one out). His vocalist on this album,
in my opinion is better than the Meshuggah vocalist. He's got more
personality and, I don't know, just sounds more "wicked".

If you can't get enough of Meshuggah, do yourself a favor and pick this one
up. It's at CDNow. I plan on filing it under "M" in my collection.

    Later!

    - Dr. Teeth

Well, you asked for it. I can hardly agree with that list. Everyone's got
his own opinions, but IMVHO Conception's "Flow" is a rather forgettable
album. To place it on the No.1 (!!!) spot is quite ... er ... irritating. :)

Other than that, it's pretty well-written (that's the objective part here ;)

I bought this album and it quite a bit... Musically
this thing is great, very cool guitar playing...
Twisted subject matter including alien abductions and
things are fairly entertaining too... About the only
thing I am not real crazy about the vocalist from
Cradle of Filth on some of the tracks... "Beavis on
crack" as I call him... hehe

            Gay shit. Well...

Why so much hate about all the "true metal bands"? I am myself not a fan
of those bands, although I like to listen to Manowar just for fun. Of
course, there are not as much 122/457 signatures or technical stuff in it.
But can't you let people like what they want to? If I told you I was a
Morbid Angel or a Charles Mingus fan (in fact, I am both), would you blame
me because your personal opinion is not according to mine?

Please let people think what they want to. No intellectual dictature.

I got one of those stupid "Sign up with BMG!" letters in the mail
yesterday and I had just opened it. Out of curiosity, I started flipping
through the stamp listing they had (you have to apply these stamps to the
order form for some ridiculous reason) and, to my complete surprise, they
actually have Dream Theater on the stamp listing! Once in a LIVEtime was
on there, as was Fates Warning: Still Life. I was blown away. Just
thought I'd share my amazement with everyone. Too bad SFaM wasn't on
    there, though.

I have to agree with you. Although I haven't picked up WDADU yet I just
got Awake and I freakin love it. It is so Hard and different from alot of
their stuff. And ya know, the first album I ever heard by them was FII.
The guitarist in my band played it for me after he got it. He was/is a
huge fan and he didn't really like it and wanted to see what I thought. I
freakin loved it. i had never heard ANY prog up to that point and now I
am really into it. ANyway, just my two cents!!! i like it all, they just

hello, hello there... It's been a long time since I posted to the jam... so I though I'd ask you for a few recommendations :-). Okay... this is what I'm interested in: Explorers Club - Age of Impact, Rush Tribute - Working Man - are these any good? I have heard only two albums by Rush (Fly by night, Grace under pressure) and since they have alot albums, I though I'd get this tribute... or maybe i should get some "best off" album? I like Grace under pressure ALOT so if anyone can recommend something in that vein I'd be grateful... I've read some reviews about Shadow Gallery's albums... so, just go ahead and name the one I should start with :-)). I've recently purchased Vanden Plas' Far off Grace and I think it's great! And today I bought a promo copy of When Pus Comes to Shove by Platypus... I listened to it 2 times today. The music store where i usually buy cds had a Platypus poster on the wall and I didn't even see it... hell, they had a few copies of the album and me, the blind idiot who has become a part of inventory in that store in the past few months, didn't even see the damn thing! So, anyhow, I asked the guy if they're gonna order it again and he said that he already ordered it but they don't have it in stock anymore... and then he said that he has a promo copy which "he shouldn't sell" but luckily, he made an exception. He brought this big box with, excuse me for saying so, shitload of promo cds... he has 2 copies of Vanden Plas' "The God Thing", then 2 copies of Winter Rose cd and lots of others and he's ready to part with them... which is fine by me! Oh, btw... I finally got Mind's Eye by Vinnie Moore. Thanx again to all of you who listened to the mp3 and told me what it was... it's been a few months since i first heard the clip on the radio, but I finally got the cd. Finding those Shrapnel Records Cds here in Europe is sometimes pretty hard... but it was worth the wait, In Control rules! :-))

NP: Platypus [WPCTS] - Bye Bye :-))

p.s. I'm getting Mullmuzzler and LTE 1 tomorrow! This will be a nice weekend!
