The AOL users don't know any better. Once you've experienced an ISP
that doesn't have busy signals, signal loss, stupid solicitations from
other users, carier loss...it's very hard to go back to AOL. Most AOL
users are not very experienced internet users and as a result, they want
a turn-key easy solution to internet use. Trust me, if you're not using
AOL and are getting by fine, don't even waste the typing to sign up to
AOL.
There are a handful of very good national and local ISP's that ar much
better than AOL.

i was just wondering what everyone's favorite song was out of the new
material that was played at the shows...
i don't know about anyone else, but, although many might say 'Acid Rain' is
the best, 'Biaxident' is just too mighty! it just has a great feel to it,
and it has a kind of soaring quality that's hard to put into words (it's
kind of uplifting (in a weird sort of way)...it puts me in mind of 'Freedom
of Speech' (which, IMHO, is the best song on the 1st album...), which is
probably why i like it so much...)
what's your opinion? we'd like to know... :o)

Piltdown man was the name of an ancestor of modern day Homo Sapiens.
It's been a while since I was into anthropology, but I believe that it
was basically just a few skull fragments found in some European cave or
quarry in the early part of this century. As to whether it was an
Austrolopithocus, a Neandertal, or Cro Magnon, or whatever, I don't
remember. This info might not be entirely correct - I'm basing itoff a
class I took 8 years ago. OK, I'm done being a geek.
Oh, btw, I'm back. See? I'm gone for a couple of months and Sherrinean
decides to split from Dream Theater. Good thing I'm back now... I hear
that John P was ready to send Korn some audition tapes.....

What? I'm on AOL, I realize how bad it is. I hate it. It pisses me off
everytime I sign on. But my ISP just isn't important enough to me that I'll
change it.

That's my favorite cover too, and if it weren't for that cover, I never
would've heard of DT. First album I got was Awake, which I ordered from
Columbia House for free. I got it on a whim. They showed the cover and I liked
it, so I bought. Pretty empty reason, but it worked.

Me too. The FII cover was sub-par for DT. Yeah, I understand it. Infinity. The
2 guys seeing the reflections of themselves looking at the other through the
binoculars. I guess it's like the reflection of a mirror *in* a mirror. And I
hated the OIaLT cover. It's just plain ugly. But I like the font as if that
matters.

Heh, you're not even close. Piltdown man was the supposed "missing link," a
fossil discovered in Britian in the late 19th or early 20th century (don't
remember offhand). It was eventually revealed that the specimen was a hoax, a
product of the race among anthropologists to be the first to solve the mystery
of evolution. If I remember correctly, the remains of the fantastic creature
were a combination of various primates, including humans.

Well, first of all, the reason I used "Punkass" in the post you are
replying to is because the guy I was talking to uses the handle "Punkass"
on IRC. Anyone who has ever been on the Ytsejam IRC channel knows this.
It was not an insult in any way to anyone.
Second, I can't consider ANYONE who sells boots for more than the cost of
blanks/postage a "Fans for Fans" operation. To me, boot trading/taping in
general is a grey area of moral/legal issues, but SELLING the boots is not.
A "Fans for Fans" operation would be someone who tapes the shows and maybe
starts a tape/cd/dat/etc tree with other fans. I don't want to hear about
the time and energy put into remastering the tapes and making liners, etc.
These are common arguments from boot-sellers. Remastering is not difficult
once you know what you're doing - it's just time consuming. One of my
computers is in use 24/7 for this very purpose. And as for the great "full
color magazine quality liners," are we in this for the music or some
worthless piece of paper? In fact, Scott Sturdivant (the very Punkass I
spoke of above) recently put out the Philly LTE show on CD for -trade only-
with excellent looking, full color liners and superb sound. And he didn't
have to cheat fans out of $25 for it.
As for your Moose example, I feel that if the only way top quality boots
can get out is to have them for sale, they shouldn't get out at all.
However, I find it very hard to believe that this stuff "never saw the
light of day" even though this guy somehow "collected and traded" for it.
Doesn't that seem like a bit of a contradiction? You referred to this
company as a "Fans for Fans" operation. I think it's very obvious to
anyone that if this guy quit the game because many people got the music
WITHOUT PAYING HIM for it, this Fans for Fans label is not accurate in any
way. He left the scene because he wasn't profiting off the music that
should have been free in the first place.
Bottom Line: Why should fans pay one person with absolutely no
affiliation or support from the band for recordings of live music? They
shouldn't. Many do, but it's mostly from laziness (they don't want to do
the work involved with getting a collection going) or ignorance (they don't
know HOW to go about doing it).

kinda of a side note to this discussion, but some of my friends have had trouble getting on pages of other ISPs that i've recommended while using AOL. i was wondering if this was an ambush, or just their stupidity.
Honestly though, i'd have to plug my ISP. Unlimited access at 56k nationally is well worth $9.95 a month. no busy signals either.
also, with aol you dont get access to newsgroups and you're stuck with their software. later.

Well, I went to the www.empeg.com site, and the "Empeg-car" (as it's called) holds between 35 and 500+ *hours* of music! ...depending on how much you're willing to pay for it. It's really a fantastic thing, and you should all check out the website. It comes with software so you can categorize all of the music that you put onto it, and then you can use a random function to play the music back from within a given category. I'd be pysched to have a DT category and a Rush category, and a general prog category, etc. No more changing CDs or tapes in your car while you drive (although I've gotten pretty good at it). No more trying to guess what you might want to feel like listening to before going on a long road trip. It's great! It's damn expensive too, but that's because the makers want it to do all the things it does. Anyway, I'm *pumped* ...despite the fact that I won't be able to afford one for a year or two. The Empeg-car player will be available in March for about $950, if anyone's interested.
What I want to know is why can't they just make a CD player that plays CDs of mp3s (like Scarred Records sells)? You can hold upwards of 11 1/2 hours of mp3-stored music on a 650MB CD. I could have all of my mucic stored on 10-15 CDs. *That* would be *money*!

AOL's signup kits tell you that they are the fastest, easiest, most reliable Internet service out there. Is that true? Not by a million years. AOL offers its users horrendous service. The company is so ov erloaded with customers -- and is so far behind at installing equipment -- that busy signals have become more common than an actual connection when dialing into AOL. In addition, if you do connect, you are condemned to use badly written AOL software to read and send email and to browse the Web. For a service that is still more expensive t han its competition, is the sacrifice worth it?

Not to beat this point to death, but I think that's only part of it, but another part of it is that they read all this stuff about how cool the internet is and they want to get an internet connection just to say they have one. How many ISPs can you can you name that advertise on TV? I can only think of two, plus AOL. AOL is the most visible, so that's where they go. I wonder if people know they can go to www.aol.com and download AOL Instant Messenger for their non-AOL ISP...

AHEM, I beg to differ, but when I am home from school I am subjected to the woes of AOL. Put me in the category of Class AOL Bombers or something, because I'm ready to take that whole system out. I want to get RID of it already. And probably the phenomenon of people not being on AOL but hating it comes from the fact that they once had it, realized the nightmare it was and switched ISPs....God please let my parents realize this too.... although spending most of the year at school is a godsend in that regard.
Anyway, to go onto something more music related, although still not really DTC at all (so flame me) I have to send some inane comments about YOUnique. They're all along the lines of KICKASS! (tm), IT ROCKS! (tm), and other classic favorites. I can't make any comments about it blowing my balls off, because frankly, I have none. :) In more extended form, this is a great CD. I'm going to let it sink in a bit more, but I can tell right now after owning it for several daysies (thanks Mark M.) that it's good. There's a whole variety of different musical styles in there - frequently I catch myself raising my eyebrows and mouthing WTF is THAT?!?!?! - and they all WORK! Cha-ching, success to Bernd and the guys. They also kept that fabulous crunch from the guitar that so hooked me when I heard Behind. Mm, yummy. No, sickos, the guitar work! Highly recommended - both albums.
