To refresh your memory, John DiBella was talking about how people trying
to disperse live material among the fans and trying to put the boot sellers
out of business was a bad thing. BWAHAHAH. Man, if those same boot sellers
weren't so damn egotistical about which boots they have and how no one else
has them, then EVERYONE could enjoy the music, not those willing to shell
out the big bucks! If those people would just join in normal trades, the
rare stuff would be common and all would be great! Who cares if something
is rare, especially if its illegal anyway?! Its music damnit, and its meant
to be heard!
Kyle Semenoff was the first person I ever traded with...and I must say
he really opened up my mind. I had gathered from discussions on here that
some boots were hoarded by those close minded "collector/boot sellers"
people and that I was just plain outta luck if I wanted one. Kyle, being
the awesome guy he is, just said, "Whats the difference? Its a 74 minute CD
just like all the rest, theres no difference for me in copying it!" This
really made me think..."man, then how come if its just like any other CD,
its supposedly so hard to get?!" The material on that CD is great (Im
referring to The Dance Of Eternity) and EVERY Dream Theater fan should hear
the original ACOS. So to those who choose to hoard, because they're only
concerned with making a profit...try to find that "fan" within yourself
which got you to bootlegs in the first place.

Adam, those liners I sent you were crap! Thanks to The Cow God (Dan
McCormack) who's a genius at Photoshop, I now have HIGH QUALITY great
looking liners to complement your LTE: Testing For Tension CDs. I'll upload
them tonight to my webpage, so for everyone who's already traded with me and
didn't get these new liners....I'm terribly sorry, but go download them and

Most of you know my take on bootlegs, but I wanted to chime in here
because of some things that were said a little while ago on this list.
Bootlegs are good, if the band is cool with it. Bootlegs are recordings of
events, so that people can re-live a concert or experience a band live that
they might not have been able to see otherwise.
Bootlegs for sale, are generally NOT cool. Some are reasonably
priced... $25 for 2 cds is not highway robbery. $25 for ONE cd IS. The
common response by bootleggers is "I have to pay for my equipment" or "I
have to pay for my source tapes" or "I put a lot of work into this stuff...
I deserve money for it." I think that's pretty shallow. If you have the
gear to record a show, you have it because you wanted it. You don't buy
that gear thinking "This stuff will pay for itself in 2 months!" If you do,
you're a businessman anyways, and you're not doing anyone a favor. No one
owes you allegiancem and hopefully EVERYONE will dub your boots. If you're
paying for your source tapes, you're more than likely a fool. You're
perpetuating the CRIME involved in bootlegging. You're helping people make
money off music they have no right to.
Fact: There are MANY ytsejammers who will provide copies of boots ON CD
for free (or for cost). Many of these people are the same ones who put the
work in to record and master the boot themselves. They do it because they
love it, and because they like providing this stuff to fans of the band.
The argument that this reproduction for free sends bootleggers out of
business, forever losing the trading community precious soundboard boots is
somewhat upsetting. That's the same thing as saying that it's cool to be
greedy. I'd rather see 20 bootleg sellers go out of business altogether and
lose those soundboards than send the message that this stuff is cool to
sell. I don't think greed helps ANY of us. Someone who decides not to give
people copies or trade copies of their boots when they realize they aren't
cutting it as a businessman are ASSHOLES. Don't pity that person. Don't
agree with that kind of logic. You're screwing yourself (unless of course,
you're that kind of person).
Listen, I don't make the rules, and I hope I'm past the point of getting
in flame wars with booters.... I mean I'm good friends with at least one
dude who sells... and he knows where I stand. I am not on a crusade to end
boot sales, but I think this is a side of the coin that should be heard. I
don't think it's cool to blame the fans for not wanting to pay for boots.
That's the way many of us believe it should be. The dude with the Rush
boots who went out of business and kept all his boots... that's not the
fans' fault for subverting his system. That's his fault for relying on an
income that he had no right to. Being a scrooge was his choice, and that
says a LOT about the kind of person he is.

totally blown away.
i've just heard the amp-eggs of the lte phil. show and the new material
is enormous good stuff. very hard indeed, yet with biaxident (which
reminds me of Freedom Of Speech, as well) they again offer that orgasm
like tension increasing prog stuff i love. impressive arrangement. acid
rain impresses with its sheer power. what i was not so happy about is,
that JP finally got introduced to the whammy pedal. i am totally crazy
on this stuff and own it since the first days of the whammy II, it
really gets on my nerves sometimes. listen to jennifer battens above
below and whatsoever and youll know what i mean. JP doesnt use it to its
limits, but, wtf, why bother...
i love the new LTE stuff!

Well, I've been an AOL user for 2 plus years now, here is the only reason I stay on AOL: My parents pay for it! My father and I are patiently awaiting the day that the cable company installs the fiber-optic cables in my neighborhood, so we can get a cable modem, and a decent ISP. Though busy signals are a rarity in my area, there are other annoyances. The 46 minute timer, the "you have been idle for a while, would you like to stay online?" message, and getting knocked offline. I could bitch for hours about forgetting to open some of my "hacker" programs, which keep me online, and trying to d/l a large file, only to get knocked offline, because I was "idle". Of course I was idle! I was downloading a huge file!
AOL does suck.

a bit off topic but it's been buggin me that when tagging an mp3 in winamp "progressive metal" isn't in the genre list. i'm constantly making compilation mp3 cd's and it's good to differentiate between prog rock and prog metal.. anyways.. only reason i post this on the jam is because i thought that if enough people would write winamp the could make that addition with their next patch .. i know lotsa people on the jam use winamp and i'd like to think that most people on the jam listle to progressive metal :)

As promised, I have the nominees for the DT Quotable Awards -- the best quotes *by Dream Theater members* from 1998. This year, I'll be loose with the rules (because it's the first year for the awards) -- quotes said in 1997 but first made public in 1998 are legal, but, again, the quote has to be from a member of DT (in 1998).
Here are the current nominees.
1) Mike: "What are you doing today Derek?" Derek: "Making history. And you?" Mike's set up is merely that). For those who don't have 5YiaLT yet, the situation is this: Mike and Derek are in the studio during the FII sessions. Mike asks the question, and Derek in a slightly feminine and non-chalant voice, says his line from above, which illicits a hearty laugh from MP.
2) James: "Derek? Derek... We're not doing it." my site: http://thanatos.uoregon.edu/~ryoga/meanstreet.mp3 Basically, Derek goes on and on about how Elton John was his idol growing up and that, since they each got to pick one cover song, he wanted to do an EJ song. Just as he's about to start, James says the above quote ("Derek... we're not doing it.") It was a good laugh.
3) James: "I truly believe Robert Plant has no nuts." end of "Since I've Been Loving You." The mp3 of this song is available at Lines in the Sand (http://dreamtheater.mite.edu) in the audio section. The quote should be self-explanitory. ^_^
4) James: "I don't understand your language, so go the fuck away!" This is the only non-sourced quote nominated. Normally, I wouldn't accept it until it was sourced, but Jon Parmet, the nominator, is a stand-up guy, and I remember reading it in one of the jams and laughing. I'm currently looking through old jams to find it, but so far, nothing. It's worth nominating, though.
5) A fifth nomiation would be really great. Actually three more would be great. How about some Petrucci or Portnoy quotes?
What I'm going to do is extend the nomination deadline one week. Send me (matt2518@gladstone.uoregon.edu) your nomination, and where you heard/read it, and I'll stick it on this list when I send it again in a week's time.

My personal response to that question:
I had AOL several years ago, it was my first experience with the Internet. I liked some aspects of it like the chat groups and relative ease of use of their network. However, when it came to the actual internet I had nothing but trouble. I couldn't access many sites and if I'm not mistaken (this is what I've heard) AOL was/is very censored and it actually wouldn't allow you to access some sites. I may be wrong about that, but I did have trouble finding LEGIT sites. They're easy when it comes to accessing their network stuff (anything from their graphic links all over) but World Wide Web was a different story.
The thing that finally got me to quit AOL, and the biggest reason I wouldn't recommend it to anyone (besides the busy signals) is that they started sending me stuff I didn't order and charging up my credit card. I know it was them cause I was getting "AOL Store" on my Visa statement! When I questioned them about it they denied it of course, saying that I or someone using the account pressed the wrong button, however they had a security measure that you can only order from the MAIN account. Not even I used that one, I used a second user ID I'd set up. So once I got a refund I cancelled them and never went back.
Like others have said, stick to a real ISP. You can find all the same info you would on AOL on the Internet with less hassle. I finally chose Ameritech cause they're the phone company here, they own all the lines, they seem to be dedicated to good service and therefore I've had VERY reliable service.
No ISP is perfect, but AOL has been the overall worst for me.

Hmm. I've never had any trouble accessing newsgroups with AOL. Plus you're not limited to using its crappy default browser.....Netscape and MIRC work just fine with my AOL ISP. Not that I endorse "AOHell", because indeed signing on can be a real ugly bitch sometimes, but a lot of people generalize AOL'ers as naive or computer-illiterate. That's true for the majority maybe, but let's keep a stereotype a stereotype. Please let this not become a common thread. :-)

It's easy to like something when you've never been exposed to something better.
I will admit that AOL is easier to learn for people with a limited amount of computer exposure. Finding a local ISP, setting up your dialer properties, installing a browser and other net goodies can be a overwhelming task for the computer illiterate. That's why AOL is so popular. Then again... So is Hanson. :)
That was below the belt.
P.S. I have several customers and friends that are AOL escapees, they are much happier with other providers.
