I read like, the whole thing right before I joined this list a couple nights ago (in fact, that may be where I found out there WAS a list). There's a lot of stuff there about who sings what when, what funny looking symbols mean something, which ones don't really mean anything, and what the hell some of these guys were thinking when they wrote some of the lyrics (I thought the story of the collaboration on "Take the Time" was pretty neat).

With all due respect, you are on crack. Timescape sounds NOTHING like a DT clone. If anything they sound a BIT like Queensr=FFche, but DT they are not. This, IMHO, is a KICK-ASS release The opening track is so far off the map as far as what's been done previously by "Prog-Metal" bands it's not even funny. The disc runs the gamut from sublime to in-your-face, it took me about 20 listens before I even caught the scope of the musicianship displayed in Silent Room Of Time. And much like Queensr=FFche's Operation:Mindcrime, every time I listen to it I hear something new. That's not to say it's on par with O:M, but just that it's a very cerebral disc, there's more going on than you initially realize. These guys are FOR REAL! Just my opinion...

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say that every track on the album is like that. You're right, though, there are some very strong similarities through most of the tracks.

According to some, it's not their best either. Their talent is That's probably the most popular opinion, that chaosphere might be their weakest release yet. I won't agree with that yet. This CD is still hard for me to get into, but I really haven't listened to it too many times. Still, Contradictions Collapse, None, and Destroy Erase Improve all won me over right away. It's hard to put my finger on why chaosphere is taking longer to grow on me. One thing it's definitely missing is some of the grooving riffs that were present (yes, even through the polyrhythms!) on the other CDs, which is unfortunate, because I thought that was a strong feature of their songs. I believe one thing that was a major factor with chaosphere is that the band sort of rushed through the song-writing and recording process for this CD. I remember reading on the band's official webpage that, as Meshuggah went into the studio, Fredrik Thordendal had some doubts as to whether the songs were ready or not. Another thing is, the song "Sane" on the CD strikes me as the most polished, well-thought-out (in terms of how the song moves from one theme to the next) song on the CD. Sane was released in '97 on an EP in much the same form that it is on the Chaosphere CD, so it's been completed for some time now. I don't know anything about the other songs, but I'm guessing they didn't spend as much time working on them as they did on Sane.

    > undeniable and I don't want to give up on these guys. Just thought I'd > give my impressions of this VERY unique industrial-metal band. Unique is right. One thing about Meshuggah is that these guys really have carved out their own niche. If you hear a song by them, you won't mistake them for anybody else. Very distinctive sound and playing.

Well ummm, I would assume it's John Petrucci cuz in the Silent Man video it's him mouthing all the background vocals.. And he usually does backgournd vocals at concerts n stuff anyways so yeah I think it's him.

The person who sang the BG vocals on TSM for the recording of "Awake" was the producer, John Purdell. It's in the liner notes AND in the FAQ. The reason you saw JP singing the BG vocals for TSM on the video is because he does it for all of the live performances.

just a thought on how the average lifespan of popular bands has changed over the years. who played at woodstock? bob dylan, jimi hendrix, etc. these bands/artists are still well-known now. who played woodstock '94? while its true that some of them are still around today (red hot chili peppers, metallica), many of them aren't. who still listens to bands like candlebox (ok i still like candlebox's first cd but that's not the point)? and of the bands who are still around, how many will still be household names in 20 years, when the next woodstock rolls around? just a pre-bedtime thought from everyone's favorite cow (heh). thoughts? moo.

The backing vocals on The Silent Man were done by John Purdell, who produced the album. Check the FAQ.
