This is a strong debut album from a Prog Metal band from Sweden
with influences of Dream Theater and Queensryche. Maybe you could
say that they are a Dream Theater clone, and you could criticise
that they aren't that original. That was the negative things,
here's the positive.
The musicians are skilful and the singer is a little bit
reminiscent of James La Brie of Dream Theater. And although he
don't reach the same high standard as James La Brie, he's isn't a
bad singer at all. Most notably is the bass player that is very
talented.
The best tracks are "Caught in Reality" and "Two Worlds".
I think that Timescape have the ability to make it big and I'm
sure that their next album have the capabilities to be a very
strong album. You can't really expect a debut album to be perfect,
but this is close.

secret is that there actually is a Dream Theater FAQ (Frequently Asked

After listening to OIAL several times, I have noticed that James' singing
seems almost human (and not god-like as on ie. Live At The Marquee). When I
added this conclusion to FII's corresponding "humanity" i asked myself (and
you): are the guys at DT losing their divinity? Hopefully the new album will
prove me deeply and utterly wrong :) This is just MHO...what's yours?
Another thing:
About the pattern on the floor on the IAW cover: Doesn't it remind you of
the Majesty-symbol? (ie. the one at the top of the bed). And if anybody
knows any fun facts about the engravings on the vase on the same cover,
please enlighten me

The power ballad (or just ballad) is one of the ultimate metal cliches. Just because a band has a ballad does not mean they're not metal. Case in point: Nevermore. Probably the heaviest band I own CDs by...but even they have ballads every once in awhile. And they are melodic as well. I'll give you that Pantera and Slayer may be what the mainstream thinks of when they think of metal, but there are so many melodic metal bands as well (with plenty of ballads).

Ah well.... where to begin?
I headed out to Detroit's I-Rock club last night, along with my cool cohorts Christian Kremo (from the Ytsejam), and Romy Bahri (from the Dream Theater International Fanclub). I'd also like to mention that it was awesome meeting fellow Savatage-fans Jenny McGregor and Bart! Both of them were very cool, and I look forward to seeing them at future shows!
We arrived at the club at 8:10, and were in time to catch the second of the six (yes, SIX) bands (two locals), which was Powertrip. Powertrip was pretty good, but sounded a little too unoriginal, and a little too 80's perhaps (although they had keys, which was cool). The singer was good, by the way, and I wouldn't mind seeing them open at a future show, so I could further my opinion of them.
The Quiet Room - These guys kicked ass. If you're not familiar with them---- pick up Introspect. It's very similar to Fates Warning guitar-wise, and also resembles Dream Theater at times, although The Quiet Room is heavier. The drummer was a monster, and the new singer was pretty decent. And yes, it's true that's he's a lower-range singer than the guy on Introspect, but contrary to reports, he IS NOT a cookie-monster growler! I have to admit though... he didn't LOOK like a prog-guy like the rest of the band.... he had more of that rap-metal look. In addition to the Introspect stuff, TQR played several songs off of their upcoming 2nd disc, and this stuff rocked. It was also more original sounding than the Introspect material, so that's a good thing. Cool moment: Talking to TQR guitarist Jason Boudreau before the show. What a nice guy! He had no problems spending some time talking to Christian, Romy and myself. BTW- Romy asked him if Jim Matheos was a big influence, and he said that YES, Matheos was - and that it really showed on Introspect. I got the impression from him though, that this will hold less true on the next disc (which seemed to be backed up by the fact that the new tunes we heard did sound more original, and less Fates-ish)
Jag Panzer - I don't know much about Judas Priest, but these guys seemed like a bit of a Judas Priest clone. The most memorable thing about them was the ridiculous leather-and-spiked clad singer, who was incredibly cheesy. "Yeeessssss....... we are the MIGHTY Jag Pannnnnzzer......." Gotta love a singer that goes on about leather trouser-vipers and shit. heheh. Oh, and I thought his little "Leather Viper" hand motions were really cool too! *LOL* Needless to say, the three of us had a good laugh about the JP singer. On the bright side: I thought the lead guitarist kicked some ass, and I actually did enjoy a couple of the songs. All in all, they aren't my cup of tea, but I have to admit they were pretty decent at what they do.
Anvil - I hate to rag on a band...... but these guys really weren't my kinda thing. All the songs sounded the same, and all the speedy guitar solos sounded exactly the same too. I think "Speed of Sound" and "Smokin' the Green" and most of the others were all the same song, with different words. If you're into that kinda thing though..... and think that singer/guitarists who use dildos as guitar picks, and that are real Dave Mustaine wannabees (even down to the facial expressions,only exaggerated), ... then you might want to check these guys out. Positive note: I'll give them a few points for the guitarist coming off the stage, and playing in the middle of the audience. That was cool.
ICED EARTH - Well, what can I say. Iced Earth fucking rules. If you're into straight-forward melodic heavy thrash/power metal and you haven't heard Iced Earth ------- go pick up Something Wicked This Way Comes (their latest), or at least check out the page at http://www.icedearth.com
If you ARE into Iced Earth, please don't hesitate to see them live. They are VERY TIGHT musically, and sound just as good live (if not better, actually) than they do on their discs.
They were very solid with their drums and bass, and I thought the new lead guitarist was pretty good too. Of course, the heart of the band is Matt Barlow (vox) and Jon Schaffer (rhythm guitar-songwriter). Barlow was excellent live, pure and simple. He carried the power of the music to us excellently. His singing ranged from the deep power of the more recent material, to the high-pitched stuff from the first two discs (and some moments on the newer ones). Not to mention, the guy's just an excellent frontman, in general. Jon "Fuck Posers" Schaffer is just unreal. His rhythm guitar just blew the roof off the fucking place (he was the real highlight of the night, IMO). I really can't think of many (if any) heavy metal bands that wouldn't really benefit from having Jon as their rhythm guitarist. And geez.... talk about a guy who's just 100% true metal. =) He's the one musician I could never picture selling out.....
I won't spoil anybody with the exact setlists, but they played lots from Something Wicked This Way Comes and The Dark Saga, only one from Burnt Offerings (*grumble*), two from Night of the Stormrider, and one from the self-titled disc. All in all, I was pleased that they played MOST of my favorites, with the exception of a few from Something Wicked, and I missed not hearing some more from Burnt Offerings.
All in all, a really cool time with some cool people, and some great music to boot! =) Can't wait to hear what Iced Earth has in store for us next, and I'm also eagerly awaiting the next Quiet Room disc!

Hum actually really kicks ass, if you can get past a mediocre singer. I saw them about a year ago with Swervdriver (sp?), both of whom had new albums in late 97/early 98. True, they've only had one hit, but they're still around. Liberty Lunch, the venue I saw them at, was just about full, so something like a thousand people were there.
