Hi, just trying to help a friend out here!

He is interested in this album, he read about it in some drummer
    magazine (Zildijan ...).

Neil Peart solo album around 1994 - 95!
He said that many drummers are guests on his album (Hmm, drummers guests
    on a drummer's solo album???)

Anyone know this album, any more info, anything ...?
    Private or jam mail! Thanks!

Ptacek" <someone@prognosis.com> > Subject: Don't kid yourself > > I was so disgusted when some dude responded to this with "I can't > afford it... maybe where you get your cds they are cheap but blah > blah blah" it's all a bunch of bullshit,... I buy a lot of cds, and > I am NOT rich. I make less than most people on this list as a student > who only works for part of one day a week. I manage to buy all the > imports and domestic cds I want. A strong percent of my cds are > imports. I pay my money too.

You see, this is your personal point of view. Why you define/put things according your life? Yes, we are mainly students (me too) but you put it as "we ALL work part of the week!". Sorry pal, maybe in USA or somewhere else, but not in other countries! At least not in mine! Means I DO NOT have my own money except the pocket money from my parents. But I try to buy my fave CDs, although it's very hard! I CANNOT find the music I like in my country! Some pals over here were falling unconscious when they saw the Bulgarian bootlegs of OIALT! Why? Ask yourself? Because it seems too much to be true!

    > I don't know what you guys are > doing... but if I can afford cds,.most of you can.

    No we can't!

What if someone if starving to death BUT also chooses to listen music? Can you take that right from him? I don't say that we should consciously try to rip off our fave bands, but do you think ppl with way bigger problem on their heads care about these topics? Heck, there are many ppl in my country that would beat me to death if they see I'm wasting time for "MP3s thread chats". You think they CARE about if bands get their 20$ or not at all? C'mon, they don't care AT ALL. All they care is laying their hands on the music they want. End of story! No nightwares, no conscience-striken, nothing at all!

We can't make generalisation based on our lifes. The first dude who replied about this full-length album MP3s reuqest sounded like it was a matter of life and death question to him! OK, he might do that, but tthere are ppl who don't care at all about that kind of view!

My mom said that when she was buying for me Joe Satriani - "Time Machine" CD for some 40$ in America (buisness trip) ppl were looking her like she was completely nuts!

    Let's hear that again:

    > I was so disgusted when some dude responded to this with > "I can't afford it.

????????? Disgusted????? Can't it be that he was speaking the truth? Do you know him personally? Do you know his incomes? Even he if lies, some others are really in that kind of situation, which makes this "disgusted" statement pretty not-supported-with-facts.

I realise that all this MP3 stuff is really worth of analysing, what are the influences and consequences it brings to the whole music selling industry but don't draw the conclusion so soon! Someone said some time ago - "Ppl slowly realise that music is becoming what is supposed to be - free!" Think about this kinda philosophical concept!

P.S. Oh yeah, Ptacek, this was by no way attack on you, just commenting the subject!

Definitely! That is one of the coolest moments on the CD: the first time I listened to it, I imagined I was in the audience. DT got the audience so caught up in the end of "Learning to Live" that they missed the switch to the next song. Without looking at the setlist (or the description on the back of the CD <g>), you know it's music you've heard before, but it takes a while to place it. It turned out VERY cool and I assumed that's how they planned it!

    >Kevin was more constructive and keyboards were more important >part on Images And Word/Awake than on Falling... But I didn't say Umm...No. Well, I&W obviously true, but Awake? More keyboard heavy than FII? I think not. Guitars ruled the roost on Awake much more than FII. You're new so I'm not going to start flaming you, but...Who composed most of LITS? Anna Lee? And you're going to say that Lie was more Keys-heavy? Err...NO.

And now for something completely different. >DTC: I was just listening to OiaLT. You ever wonder if during DT >jam sessions, KJLB just just puts the mic down and says, "How the hell >do you _do_ that?" to JP? I swear, I've listened to the OiaLT guitar Actually, I believe the exact syntax JLB uses is "-----", which roughly translates to an open mouth gawp. There's a lot of JP's parts that I don't know WTF he's doing even when I've got the damn tablature in front of me. But why stop at JP? I mean, I'm a guitar player, and I dabble with synths. Drum solos? I don't want to know. Normally. MP's solo on OIaL? I sat there for 5 minutes, going "-----"! How can he PLAY like that? Same with watching Derek on 5YIaL, during TLF and LTL. HOW fast are his fingers going? Fuck...

(and most people have heard of them[Rush, that is-sjd]). No they haven't. I'm not even going to argue on this, MOST PEOPLE KNOW FUCK ALL ABOUT PROG. The average John Doe (fuck, I'm turning into a yank. I even said "College" on here instead of "University" the other day) hasn't even heard of Led fucking Zeppelin!

I won't quote it, but Issac disagreed with me about trading MP3s of albums. Everything he said was true, but utterly irrelevant in this context. I was talking about some spotty oik trying to expand his CD collection (PC-housed CD burners cost peanuts, remember), not bands selling via the internet. Isaac: you're absolutely right, I think that the internet is going to kill record company exploitation stone dead one day; but I stand by my point, which was about some kid helping RCs to bleed bands dry.more dignity than to be MTV material.

    >I'd rather metal and any music that is good *not* get played on MTV. I'd rather KORN weren't played on eMpTyV, because they give metal a bad name because they're SHIT. HOWEVER, I did hear their latest single, and what of it I heard was pretty good. But then, it was only the last 30 seconds, so... >MTV is like the AOL of the music industry. HA HA! LOL!

Chris: > SRV, Clapton, Robin Trower, Bonnie Raitt, KWS (who I hate), Johnny Lang

Trower's awesome! Power Blues/Rock! Pick up "Bridge Of Sighs" if you dig heavy blues with lotsa distortion.

Also, I saw Bonnie Raitt back in the mid-70s when she used to rock a lot harder on the blues. Ever since Duanne Allman left the planet she's been my favorite slide guitarist. During one song, she put on seperate little slide thingies on each finger that only went to around the first knuckle, and proceed play a mean solo. She was all over the neck!!!

Matt: > to sum up KWS and johnny lang, and all the other BB King wannabe's I mearly > [snip-o-roonsky]

Two words: Muddy Waters......oh, wait!!! he was't white :) He wasn't no fucking BB King wannabe either(*) :) If anyone can find me a rarity of his known as "Electric Mud", I will instantly buy it. It quite possibly could be the first instance of heavy metal ever :)

(*) I happen to like BB King quite a lot, have "Live at Cook County Jail" on vinyl.

Chris: > cutting the artist out of the cycle completely?

Change the cycle then :) See below for the full skull leak...

    > God forbid YOU ever try to make a living as a musician.

Or perhaps a dude who wrote a cool computer program and is just trying to pay the bills. Round and round we go... reminds me of a very similar concept known as software pirating :) I defy ANYONE (present company included) on this list to tell me they never copied a piece of software w/o paying for it (or sending in that modest shareware fee the dude asks for :). Not a cut on your post, Chris, just reminded me that human nature is human nature. You're sensitive to that little example of it becuase you are a musician :)

As noble a goal as it is to try and stop it the reality is that you know deep down neither you or nor anyone else has the power to overcome the inertia. Isn't alt.binaries.sounds.mp3 like the most accessed of all newsgroups now with some ungodly amount (>10,000?) of posts PER DAY?

About the best you can hope for is that, since the technology isn't going to go away, a better level of access control will be put in place. We are humans, out of control, by definition... help us!!! :) Sign on the highway says 65?.....yeah right :)

About the only way I could to have any major impact would be for everything to go completely MP3 (replace MP3 with your favorite format, this post is not to debate the technical merits of one verus the other). As long as there are programs like AudioCatalyst/WinAmp freely available (heh, did you register your versions yet? :)), it's just too damn easy to go CD->MP3->Ears :) CDs ain't goin' away tomorrow though, we all know that.

I don't see any problem with making songs available perhaps the way a trial version of a piece of software is. It works for say 30 days. I realize this is a non-trivial thing to implement on a large scale, as it would involve much more, to prevent people from doing things like just taking the Audio Out and jacking in a recorder. But, it might give you an incentive to go out and buy the disc (or purchase the set of equivalent MP3s) if you really dig the sound, and on day 31, the sound is no more... The problem becomes a non-issue when the ability is taken away, although I'm no way suggesting the death penalty here :)))

    Comments? Suggestions? Venture Capital? :)

Raivo: > Hell, if we started to judge Dream Theater (*) by only one line in one of > their songs, what would we get if the line was "under the sun there's > nothing to hide"? It rocks! I have them both and they'r constantly in my player. They clearly show who brings what in King's X. Dougs is much heavier while Tys almost reminds on Beatles, but still rich in harmony (and I LOVE guitar sound). They are sometimes like Ying and Yang separated :)

Can't wait for King's X show in Ljubljana on March 27th. Anyone knows what's bands policy on videotaping? I'm planning to bring in my digital cam and minidisk. (Anyone interested in a copy?)

Which brings me to a question: Did Jay B tour with DT this last time out; or was it just a one night appearance for the live recording? If he didn't, did anyone tour with the band playing sax?

    Just curious...Thanks for listening.

Since the jam has been spammed so much lately, thought it may be a good time to pass this information on to everyone.

    ----- From Yahoo:

What not to do when you're spammed...

Never respond to unsolicited email/spam. To the individuals who send spam, one "hit" among thousands of mailings is enough to justify the practice.

Never respond to the spam e-mail's instructions to reply with the word "remove." This is a ploy to get you to react to the e-mail -- it alerts the sender that a human is at your address, which greatly increases its value. If you reply, your address may be placed on more lists resulting in more spam.

Never sign up with sites that promise to remove your name from spam lists. Although some of these sites may be legitimate, more often than not, they are address collectors. The first kind of site is ignored (or exploited) by the spammers, the second is owned by them -- in both cases your address is recorded and valued more highly because you have just identified it as read by a human.

    -----

Additionally, be careful about going to any web address that is given by the spam messages. They will also use this to get your e-mail address. Depending on how your web browser is configured, many websites can get your e-mail address just by you going to their website. The whole point of some of these spammers is to get YOUR e-mail address and sell it.

(FYI - If you're using Netscape as your browser, you can go into "Options"/"Mail and News Preferences"/"Identity" and make sure that your e-mail address is NOT entered. This will prevent websites from capturing your e-mail address.)

I believe its none of the above, i remember reading on the jam that the sax stuff on OIAL was actually a studio overdub. Even more so, i remember someone saying it wasnt even recorded for OIAL but that someone dubbed in old sax tracks from Jay B. The question now is.. why didnt DT use the sax player they "auditioned" and were gonna feature in that concert? Did he suck?!
