I just checked the Warner Brothers Publishing Awake tab book. It's a B
power chord according to the sheet music, and I think that probably is
right. Now, perhaps it's a different chord if its Pups leading into JLMB,
like on the Live CD, I'm just not sure. It would depend on what key JLMB
is in, but I know for sure that The Mirror on Awake's beginning is a B
    chord.

Where he hits the harmonics are immaterial, IMO because you can
hit harmonics on the second fret and play in C# Minor or whatever. My
    memory tells me it's a B, but I certainly don't care enough because I
can't play the 12th notes anyways. It's not even worth checking, IMO
because I'm going to play it how I think it is, and I wouldn't care if Joe
Jammer tells me to stick my head up the ass of the deaf school principal.

    > He wasn't about to do a tree of 8-12 CDs, now was he? :)

            Quite possibly.

Oh, and leave it to Rogerio to turn a musical flame war into
something that can be answered by science. Bastard.

    I'm a cactus!

Well, I have a 7-string and when I play along to 'The Mirror' it
sounds exactly the same when I play it in B. Maybe you're doing
something wrong...way wrong. Since you have a six string, play it at
the seventh fret (B) of the low E. Then play it at the eighth fret
    (C) of the low E. Which sounds better?

By the way, where do you live? To clarify this, I have some days off
next week. I'll just drop by to prove this to you because I can't
believe how someone would argue that the riff is in C. Just to prove
to myself that I am correct, I put 'The Mirror' in the CD player last
night and played along in 'C'. I have been known to make mistakes in
the past. I am correct on this matter, though. 'The Mirror' is in B.

    Subject: Poughkeepsie Show -- SPOILERS!!

First of all -- "Hi" to the guy on the 'jam that I met standing outside
The Chance, freezing my ass off. I was one of those two guys from
Rochester, talking to you about living in Oneonta. You were the Dream
Theater Virgin. :) You know. :)

The show blew my mind away. Very simply incredible. I had no idea what
was going to be played, because I was out of town just before the show and
hadn't been reading the 'jam. All I can say is -- these guys are truly
the best there is. Every time I go to a concert of theirs, I get put it
my place like there's no tomorrow. They're just amazing.

TLF -- I was hoping they would play that, and they did, right at the
end. Of course, LITS being one of my favorite songs, it was all good to
hear just a little bit of it in the outro.

WAYN -- The song that I've dreamed of hearing live, but never thought it
would ever happen. It was absolutely awesome.

CME -- The electric version got played, and I'm not sure if I like it
better than the acoustic version or not. Either way, it kicked ass.

O Holy Night -- Another song I never thought I'd hear live. Absolutely
incredible, with James hitting the crazy high notes.

The whole show was one to remember, seeing the retirement of Where Are
You Now? and Cover My Eyes, also seeing (according to Mike) the final
performance of Nightmare Cinema, the special encore of Peruvian Skies,
Nicky Lemons singing (actually, he's pretty good with the screams and
stuff), and the lack of security guards outside the back door of The
Chance pushing us away like the last show. The guys were all really cool,
standing out in the cold for a long time talking and signing shit and
answering questions. And, of course, it was nice to get the laugh in
about James's Canadian Caribou Farm. :)

If ANYONE taped this show, I would love a copy. Of course, I would get
any compilation CD made from all the shows, but I would also love a copy
of the Poughkeepsie show all the way through.

Thanks, guys, for an incredible concert and a fun night! Later --

                    -- Bert

For all those who threw those insults at me for claiming the note for "The
    Mirror" was a C, I apologize. You're right, it is a B. As an
explanation, "perfect" pitch (as my teacher calls it, "absolute pitch") is
not always perfect. At least not the way that I get the notes. The way I
explain it to others is that in my head I have a middle C whenever I need
it, and I can reference notes to this pitch in my head to find out what
    they are through the intervals.

However, notes that tend to be close to C are tougher for me to find,
because the pitch then tends to slide in my head a little. After that,
it's near impossible for me to figure out what notes are being played
unless I hear another C played distinctly for me. In the case of "The
    Mirror", I heard a B, thought it was a C, and therefore couldn't
re-reference the note afterward. However, when I was reading these
emails, I started singing it in my head and, lo and behold, it was a B.
So, I do apologize for being so emphatic in my wrongness. As is said in
the music business: If you're going to fuck up, fuck up big.

Just Let Me Breathe is in E major (4 sharps), but I believe an illustrious member of the Ytsejam community pointed out that the solo (with trade-offs) is in the E Phrygian mode. Since E is the third scale degree in the C major scale and the Phrygian mode is the third relative scale to the Ionian (or major), it could probably make sense that Puppies On Acid might be played in C in order to segue into JLMB. However, the chord (according to the tab book) on the Awake version of The Mirror is a B power chord. It is fretted as follows: D:-4 A:-2 E:-2 B:-0

B and F#. An interval of a major fifth, doubled an octave above.

Maybe I'm listening to the wrong version of Puppies on Acid, but I am pretty sure it is a B5 chord. Maybe it is different on the video than the final version of The Mirror. If I recall, Petrucci was using HEAVY PALM MUTING on the video - so he may have actually made the pitch go sharp. Or maybe he transposed it up to C to lead into Take the Time, which I think I recall being in C#. A half step transition is a very dramatic effect (C to C#), so that may be the case.

I hope you two don't jam together. Both of you arguing who is in the correct key, meanwhile nobody being in tune with each other. Don't worry. Mike Portnoy has better things to do than hunt you down if you play Puppies on Acid a half-step transposed. Fuck it. Tune your 7 string down to A and play it in A to show just how tough you are.

well come into my office. ] im glad you asked. yes, i do have perfect pitch. and puppies on crack ( acid hehehe ) does in fact start on a C major power chord progression ( ok you non technoids, in other words " its a fucking C chord at first! " ) and then after listening further..there's a thick mix of a steady C note ( probrably JM ), versus a c chord and b played on the guitars. its neighboring half step chords.(B and C played at the same time) i call em "chords that sound kinda cool...if your into bad editing ( no offense ) "

PS; There is no way those ads in guitar and bass mags can give you perfect pitch. you just know after a few years of hearing notes...and hey...YOWZA! you revognize em....and viola! youve got the gift of perfect pitch. try it on tone deaf friends!

Threshold - Psychedelicatessen (sp?) I've had this CD about a week now, and it's definitely rocking me hard! For anybody who likes their prog with a healthy dose of CRUNCH, you should check these guys out. The closest thing I can compare it to would be Superior's Behind (although Superior is the better of the two). I really enjoy almost all aspects of this CD: Nice crunchy guitar, pretty good vocals, some nice vocal melodies, and not too DT clone-ish (the influence is definitely there, but it isn't a DT ripoff). My only (minor) gripe would be that the keys aren't very forward in the mix at all (on most of the songs). Also, there's just a hint of repetitiveness in a few songs, but nothing too damaging.

As good as I think this CD is, I'm really suprised that I don't ever hear Threshold's name on the 'Jam (explanations anybody?). Also, does anybody know any websites for these guys? Are their other CD's as good as this one? For that matter, do they HAVE other CDs?

    ---------------

Anathema - Alternative 4 OK, I don't know a whole lot about the whole doom-metal thing (I honestly haven't heard much except Anathema, Theatre of Tragedy and Tiamat), so my word definitely isn't Gospel on the subject. That being said, my first impression of this CD (I've only had 1 1/2 listens thus far) is that it's really excellent. I have their Eternity album, and enjoy that one quite a bit - but IMO Alternative 4 is definitely better. I'm not really sure in which way I like it better....... I just do. Definitely a good CD to pop in to mellow out to, and make you think at the same time.

    ---------------

Apocolyptica - Inquisition Symphony For anybody who isn't familiar with these guys, the name of their first CD says it all: Apocolyptica Plays Metallica By Four Cellos. Yes, Apocolyptica IS four cello players (NO other instruments) who like to play metal music! Unlike their first CD, this one ISN'T all Metallica songs. There is a few Met tunes on here ("For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Nothing Else Matters", "Fade to Black", and "One"!), but there's also a Faith No More tune ("From Out of Nowhere"), two Sepultura songs ("Refuse/Resist" and "Inquisition Symphony"), one Pantera song ("Domination"), and there's also three original songs. The Metallica songs are very well done, as is the FNM song. I'm not too familiar with the Pantera song, and I've never heard any Sepultura - so I'll withold judgement on those tracks. I also think the original songs are pretty good.

Oh, while I'm on the subject, for anybody who has this CD: Did you guys notice a Metallica bit (forgot which song) in the first (original) track "Harmageddon"?

    Later folks,
