Hi, Ive been having a problem that maybe some of you can either relate to, or help me with.
Im naturally left handed, yet the first guitar I ever picked up was standard, and Ive been using
standards ever since (5 years). last year, when I first heard Petrucci, Ive wanted to shred fast.
Ive been working on it for a year and have gotten it up to mabe 160 BPM (for about 4 or so
measures). Though I have noticed that, while many people claim to be able to perform at top
speed after a 15 - 20 minute warm up, it takes me almost an hour, and then if Im not playing
constantly after that, I lose some of it. Im wondering if this is because Im left handed, and
my right hand (the weaker hand) is the picking hand, or if its just something beginers go through
and as they get better the time needed to warm up the right hand gets less and less. Are there
any shredders that are like this too? Does this mean that I may not be able to reach speeds of
Joe Stump and Petrucci? and yes, I do alternate pick, and as far as I can tell, my technique is
fine. I would greatly appriciate feedback. Thanks

    Matt

Well, after picking up a whole lotta new stuff in the last month, I
have to ask a question. I picked up the Angra - Angels Cry/Holy Land
double disc without ever hearing Angra. Everyone seems to like Angra,
so am I the only one who thinks that Andre sings like he has the
microphone shoved up into his nasal sinuses? This guy has one of the
whiniest voices I've ever heard (and I really like early Rush, so it's
not the "style" I don't like). I just don't get this one. I've been
listening for a month and it still irritates me (more so when he adds
    the extra whine!).

On the other hand, I picked up Stratovarius - Live Visions of Europe
without ever hearing Strato before. I can't remember the last time I
liked a recording so much on the very first listen. It's one kick-ass
live recording! It reminds me of classic melodic metal (like Y&T) with
some Yngwie thrown in. I guess with that mixture, I had to like it!
I'd highly recommend this to anyone who wants to check out Stratovarius!

    my $.02, BH

Eckie's description of Slayer at New Year's Evil brought back
some interesting memories of my experience at the Slayer show
         a few months ago.

My seats were in the 2nd balcony area and my guitar player (with whom
I attended the show) was on the floor. I thought that I could just
kind of mosey in there and be lost in the crowd. It turned out
that you had to go through a lot of rigor mortis in order to sneak
into the floor section, as they assigned neon pink wristbands at
the main entrance to the theater to those who had floor tickets.
I had to pick the pocket of the guy frisking me. I got away with
a pink wristband and a condom.

ANYWAY, Slayer comes on and begins to do their thing and about
halfway through the set, some dude fell down in the mosh pit.
And then, before my disbelieving eyes, this absolute bombshell
in a red and black mini (and I mean MINI) who clearly wasn't
wearing underwear, got knock over as well. Her ass landed DIRECTLY
on prone dude's face. Time seemed to slow down. I saw the guy's
legs stiffen (I assume some other stiffening was in effect as well)
and he began to writhe. The chick vainly attempted to get up was
knocked back on the dudes face, not once, but twice.

I'll leave it to your imagination to figure out how his nose didn't
get broken. They both finally managed to resume the upright position.
Throughout the remainder of the set they were kind of checking each
other out, and, as the show ended, they left together. As they walked
by me, I slipped the contraband condom in the dude's jacket.

What a great show. If only Slayer had played a song in E minor. :)

    Hey TCG,

Right now, you can't add a specific titled bootleg (stuff like "I want to add The Dance of Eternity to my collection)

What you can do is add the 5/16/93 (or whatever date that show is from) show to your collection. (I'm working on adding a specific bootleg to your collection. So, when you go to the site, go to trading post and log in at the given prompts. Then, go to "Tourography", select a tour, and you'll see options to add shows to your list. You can even click on a specific show to see all the details about the show (set list, band lineup, bootleg releases), etc.

Anyways, I hope that clears up some confusion -- and if you wouldn't mind, can you cc: this to ytsejam@ax.com or something? I don't have the power to do so right now.

    thanks! bogie

    >I think Metropolis would be best for a new listener. Space Dye Vest is

*laughs* I'd say NOT. It all depends on who the person is. If you want to show them off to a musician, I'd rather show them Learning to Live. Metropolis is a big spoon to swallow for anyone on the first attempt. Although, if they can take Met, they can take anything. :) If the person is your average AOR type of listener, show them Eve, To Live Forever, and Take Away My Pain. Lifting Shadows is a great one, too.

If the person is a metal freak, I'd say Pull Me Under, Just Let Me Breathe, Burning My Soul, and Caught in a Web. Non-chalant music listener: Another Day, Hollow Years, Speak to Me, You Not Me... :)

These are just my opinion, but I've tried showing maximum DT songs to the undisciplined and they tend to panic and devour their mate. Not good. Just remember the average person only listens to average radio. Nothing flashy, nothing great, just rythmn and harmony, bridge, chorus, bridge, chorus, chorus catchy shit.

I think I've only known one person who listened to DT and liked them. The rest all waved their hands and reached for the eject button. I've noticed the very best way to trick someone into liking DT is to play it in the background and draw no attention to it. Eventually, they'll hear something they like and go, "Who's this?" Don't act over-eager when you respond, I've known people who spread Cheese Whiz[tm] when asked the question. It's best to trick them into putting the Ytse-neuronullifier helmet on themselves than try to tackle them to do it. :)

Patience and Subtlety over Pressure and Persuasion and soon the Cult of the Ytse will sacrifice another upon the holy altar of the Trinity (Derek's Korg Trinity that is).

I really wish those >Megadeth fans would've understood the nature of the relationships >between mass and time, and understand that 2 people can not >exist in the same exact place at the same time.

Speaking as a Megadeth fan who no doubt would have been trying to crush you in rhythm to "Darkest Hour", I must apologize. We are an unthinking breed of fan who live only to disprove all laws of Physics. I saw Deth in Portchester, NY once and despite the fact it was 105 degrees outside, and there were a couple thousand people in the non-air conditioned theater bringing the temp up a couple more notches, there was no abating the crowd's energy. My friend Stu calmly watched from the seats as I stood with one person pinned between myself and the security barrier desperately trying not to puke from dehydration. I learned a valuable lesson later that night at a Kwik-E-Mart: never down a 32 oz. Gatorade if you're dehydrated. Can you say "cramps"?! Your story also reminds me a great deal of Ozzfest two years ago. The show order was Fear Factory, Type O, Pantera, Manson, Ozzy, Sabbath (never mind the second stage). Leading up to Pantera the audience was fairly sedate (even for FF), and just pleasantly basking in the Jersey sun (when it peeked through the smog) and soaking in the sounds. I still remember how supremely sublime it was to exit Giants Stadium and re-enter to the powerful melodies of Love You To Death. But then Pantera came on. I am neither a mosher nor a Pantera fan, but I couldn't help myself. I was in there with the rest of them, pounding and pummelling, trying not to get bled on. After Pantera's set, it was as if the whole Stadium had to take a collective breather in total exhaustion while Manson played. I sat down after trying to find my friends who had given up the fight. Then Ozzy took the stage and the real hell broke loose. I have never in my life been that... there's no expression for the crowd's rush of energy and what I experienced. In the span of one song, I was whisked from the back of the main crowd (right in front of the soundboard) to being pinned against the barrier at the foot of the "T"-shaped stage. For the next two hours, through Ozzy and Sabbath's set, I got no relief. Luckily, I didn't need to support myself, the crowd held me up. That was one hell of a day... Ah... the memories...

"Already?" Are you implying that there's ENOUGH guitar content here? I don't believe that's possible. :)

    > but I'm going to ask this question anyway. It was said on > http://www.stevemorse.com that JP, on AOE, picks 32nd notes at > around 200bpm. I'm not much of a musician, but my uneducated guess > always put him playing 16th notes at around 215bpm, significantly slower. > So, to anyone who knows (probably Ptacek among others), who's guess > is better?

    1. Your uneducated guess is better. I can pick 32nd notes while playing along with "Pachelbel's Canon," and that's about it. I can't imagine a song of any fast tempo whatsoever being 32nd-note-pickable. But there's lots of stuff I can't imagine, so who knows. 2. What is "AOE?" 3. I can't tell if the notes are 16ths at 215bpm unless I'm familiar with the time signature, and even then I only understand 5/12, so I can't help you there.

So to anyone who can answer my question, is it ever accurate to say "Xth notes at X bpm" without knowing how the measures are broken up? Does bpm measure each beat itself as something to cram notes into and thereby "derive" a time signature? How do 16th notes fit into a "bpm" measurement without a time sig being included in the explanation?

AND is there anyone reading this who has the soundtrack to the movie "Tron?" I've been looking for this soundtrack for a long time. I know DT didn't do any of the songs on that soundtrack, but Ytsejam is full of people who remind me of the Master Control Program, Flynn, Tron, Ram, heck you're all trapped in a video game.

"I put a new guy in the band for you to play with. He's a shredder." "But shredders... play FAST. A shredder can even play faster than YOU." "No shredder can play faster than me. I was here before 16th notes even existed. I am that which subdivides the beat." "Master Control Program, I acknowledge."

Musician Magazine did an article similar to this one several years ago. The cover of the issue had the headline "The Death of the Music Industry" with a picture of a wide open mouth that appeared to be shouting. Anyway, the article opened with a dreamy paragraph about sampling Madonna's new album on the internet, then downloading the songs you like and burning them onto your own cd on your fancy shmancy cd-burner. (It also mentioned something like "paying" for those songs with your credit card over the internet in exchange for being able to download the entire song. Anyone a Latin major? What does it mean to "pay" for music?) That article has stuck in my mind since then, and I'm kind of shocked that it's all become a reality in so few years. Did anyone with any power or influence ever take notice of that article? Did they take it seriously or were they as dis-believing as I was?

Back to Jason McCabe Calacanis' "Radiohead Effect" article, the only part I couldn't understand was his mention of having "400 tracks" that took up "1.5 megs" on a hard drive of "8 gigabytes." How short would each of those 400 tracks have to be in order for them to equal 1.5 megs? Are those the 3-second songs where Smurfs clear their throats and make clapping noises?
