I would describe "Heavenly Creatures" as a cross between "The Sound of Music"

To add a little bit to the bass players using picks discussion, I personally really like the hard edged attack that picks can give a bass, but I cannot, for the life of me, play with a pick. I have to use my fingers (it's how I learned). I've tried a number of times to use a pick and just can't get it down. Once, I tried growing my fingernails out to sort of use as picks, but, well, that didn't go over too well, either. Any tips on how I can get that sort of sound without actually using a pick?

I used to pick the bass, but once I took enough time to practice the fingering enough I couldn't use pick anymore. I've been playing with two fingers on my right hand for a long time, but now I have learned to play with three fingers well enough... Of the picking bassists the best one wuld certainly be Dave Eleffson. But still picking the bass is not a good thing to do - that's what my band-mates always tell me when I attempt to get back to picking, once qwhen I had blisters on my right hand after dubbing the doublebass part with the drummer I wanted to use a pick, it sounded awful compared to the think'n'fat sound when fingering, that I had to keep playing with blisters... I believe that a lot of bassists do not finger because of blisters they have (a lot of my friends have this problem)...

Ehh...I have to disagree. Cream, Hendrix, etc, were popular, but in an underground sort of way. The charts at that time were dominated by stuff like Aretha Franklin and the Monkees and Pat Boone. Not that there's anything wrong with Aretha. Genesis were never big until the 80's when Phil sang. Yes had about three charted singles.

You are in the unique position to test this theory yourself. Install only factory music CD's and see if the problem reoccurs. As far as the CDR issue goes, I have my suspicions, I just have no clue how to put it to words. (without a measurable degree of educated guessing) That's one of those *I'd have to be there* things.

Are octobans what mike hits to kick off 6:00?

Also, what does it mean to say a drum can be pitched? Can't any drum be pitched? I know they come in all different pitches. To be pitchable would mean to change the default setting, then?

And while we're on the subject of my percussive ignorance, why is there a pillow in a bass drum?

LOL! Okay, bass drums have a hole in the middle of the front. It creates to open of a sound, so to deaden it, we drummers place pillows, blankets, or anything else inside.

    yes.

i wonder the same thing - octobans cant have their pitch changed during playing, as umm, that big ass drum they use in symphonic bands that has a pedal below it to change the pitch. i forget what its called :) anyways, i don't own any but i believe the only way to change their pitch is by tuning them, same as other drums. however, you seldom mute octobans, since they have such a small head as it is (6" usually), they don't ring much so i guess its easier to tell the pitch. a muted drum sounds very percussive and not very melodic. which brings us to the next question:

    >And while we're on the subject of my percussive ignorance, why is there >a pillow in a bass drum?

to mute it. as i said, an unmuted drum rings and sounds melodic, which isn't a good thing for a bass drum. you want it to sound thumpy. most drummers also mute their toms and stuff, because in general a percussive, "thom" is preferred over "thoooommmmmmm" when you're doing a fill. however, some drummers don't mute them or barely mute them to keep them from sounding too dead. moo.

Hey If this has been discussed already I wasn't paying attention. Deal with it. I have been trying to write out the intro to TTT (drums mainly) and I get stuck right at the part where the keyboards come in at bar nine. You'll notice that the bass drum continues the rhythm while the snare drum and keys do a different rhythm at what seems to be a different tempo. I think the keys and snare play triplets in 4/4 at a faster tempo than the bass drums' sraight rhythm. The bass drum ends on beat 2 of bar 4 of that tempo, while the snare and keys ends on beat one of bar 5 of tempo2, which continues into the double bass groove. The begin and end on the same beat...I've tried to find some kind of polyrhythm in there and all I can come up with something close to 3 over 2...but It just seems to be two overlapping tempos. Anyone wanna comment?

On another note, is there anywhere I can find the piano music to "Wait for Sleep"?
