tomorrow, at least I am pretty sure it comes out tomorrow. Doesn't
our very own John Myung contribute to a coupla trax?

Makes me wonder how old ........

Well there ya go, cos Chris Squire's sound was my original inspiration to play
bass. John McCoy (Gillan) was another.

In fact Yes feature heavily in my overall inspiration, the song Roundabout
(Fragile) started my desire to play classical and acoustic guitar.

Alan White/Bill Bruford are in there too (just listen to side 4 of Topographic
Oceans when all the band play drums)

Jon Anderson's voice too (SO feminine)

Rick Wakeman was my original keyboard influence.

But ALICE COOPER put the shock into rock and roll!!!!!!!!!!!

I knew about Bonham's and Ulrich's bass drum sound, but to me Vinnie
Paul's bass drum has always sounded really sharp (at least on display of
power and far beyond driven). I guess you're talking about the sound he
    uses on southern trendkill?

Another Paul-related question: I read a Portnoy interview in a magazine
where they briefly discussed engineering in the studio, and Vinnie Paul's
name came up. The interviewer right then mentioned that Paul likes to
duct-tape a quarter to each of his bass drum heads, right where the beater
strikes it. They didn't make it clear why he does this (except for the
sound that results). Does this give the crisp sound from the bass drum
which is one of his trademarks? If not, what does this accomplish?
    >>>>>

As a fellow Pantera fan and VP worshipper, I must comment. First off,
Vinnie not only is a great drummer, but is the man when it comes to getting
a good sound out of ANYTHING. He engineered their live sound for a long
time (he may still), and has always had what I consider to be a PERFECT drum
sound for their music. The toms are extremely resonant, and if you've ever
been to a Pantera show on the FLOOR, the toms shake the earth (I remember it
very vividly during "This Love"). Anyway, he duct-tapes quarters onto the
heads to get a little 'click', which assures you can hear the attack of the
bass drum over everything else that is happening. This is one reason why
his sound is so sharp and tight, but a lot has to do with mic placement (and
    selection) as well.

sort of an acoustic alternative to triggering? does he tape it on the
inside or outside of the drum head? i assume outside, but just checking.

    >when I think of country, I think of Shania Twain, Garth Brooks stuff. This

That's because they are what the country crowd considers mainstream country.
Shania, Garth, Reba, LeAnn, etc. Basically they're just a different flavor
of pop. (hehe, I'll take a cherry coke, please). It's the same stuff on
different instruments. Slide guitars, pedal steels, quivering nasal voices
(not always). I've often seen the drumsets consist of just a bass drum, a
snare, and a tambourine. *shakes head dully* Alot of country songs can
rock as hard as anything. Country, though, mostly is dedicated to the
lyrics and the rythmn. There are songs to make you laugh and cry, but
seldom ever do they make you want to leap at the nearest person to you and
cave their nose in. The rythmn is about the most disgruntling part of
country. It's almost always a 4/4 bass/snare beat without hardly any
exemplification of cymbal technique nor drum fills, etc. The drums are very
generally BORING to the point of irritation. Ah, well. There's some that
aren't bad either, like when they actually start getting percussive on the
    slower songs.

When I first joined this list, I remember having a terrible despisal of
country music (and I live in Idaho for Jimny Christmas). I've grown to have
a great tolerance and even a subtle appreciation for some artists. A big
problem I have with cracking a genre is I try to jump in headfirst. I'll
pick up an Alan Jackson CD and suddenly start spitting nails listening to
it. Start from the outside of the circle and work your way to the center.
It's like those circular labyrinth mazes. You'll hit a few dead ends (bands
you don't like) on the way, but the trip is mostly always worth it. (Unless
the bastards forget to put the cheese in the middle). For country, I found
that if I started with folk music, I could start working my way in. I found
a damn cool folk group that I like alot (Chris and Johnny) that was like
something of a foundation for what alot of country songs are based on.
Modern country is mostly a pop derivative of folk music. I eventually would
hear country songs afterwards and see where they are coming from. And some
of their guitar players and such can kick ass, too. hehehe. Maybe someday
I might like rap as well, but I just haven't found any worthwhile starting
point to get into it. (Although I DID like DJ Jazzy and FP a long time
    ago).

    >that I dont like. There is some old country fiddle stuff that I think is

For some reason I've always like that Charlie Daniel's Band tune. hehehe.
Even through my country abhorring days.

    >sound like a pseudo light metal band with a vocalist who is a cross
    >between Primus and the B52's, and I just cant take that seriously.

Holy crap! That just described my reasons for why I don't like alot of
stuff. I may not seem to take anything seriously, but the music is the only
thing I can think of that I do. Maybe the bands who write the stuff I don't
like are sincere and serious about their work, but even knowing this, it may
still seem rediculous to me. I refuse to listen to "party" music. I don't
    "party."

    >sucks makes no sense. it's the same as saying that all black guys suck.
    >there's no way you've met all of them. (warning i'm not implying that

Good analogy, but IMO, if I was treated like shit by every <insert culture
here> person I'd met and someone told me that there were some good ones out
there, I still shouldn't be expected to get a wild hair up my ass to weed
through a bunch more dickheads just to find one nice guy. :) Note, that
was just in reference to Cow's analogy and definitely isn't meant to offend
anyone. If you were offended, blow me.

    Doh! That was mean. :)

He does this to increase the attack. As far as his crisp sound this is definatly one of the factors, he also does some pretty inventive miking in the studio.

Hey. Sorry to disappoint, but this style was hit upon in the late 80's and early 90's, just many people don't seem to remember it, never got into it, or are just not down with it, yo. So if you remember the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Infectious Grooves, RUN DMC, Scatterbrain, Faith No More and my personal favorite, Mordred, these are a few of the excellent bands BAFORE their time. Of course, they also combined alot of funk and blues and jazz into their funkaholical mix, but you want to rock out, jam and move around like crazy, and listen to impressive, for the most part, shredding at the same time, check out any of the aforementioned bands. Especially, MORDRED and SCATTERBRAIN and the RHCP who are still around.

Yes. Keep in mind that I am NOT anti-bootleg. I just don't see the need to SELL music that the band has put out of their own pockets to give to the fans. Of course, the music should be heard - which is why trading kicks as much ass as it does.

You don't need to listen to every rap CD there ever was to form on opinion on that musical artform. I don't like most rap b/c most of the rap (I'm just continuing w/ your metaphor) I've heard sucks IMHO. I like Busta Rhymes, Dre and a few others. I can honestly say I don't like rap. Same for hip hop (is there a real difference???). Same for modern country (and "modern swing" too. Now THERE'S some real shit). The criteria for liking a form of music is the same for disliking it- I don't have to hear every rock CD there ever was to figure out that I like rock as an artform. Which is just as well b/c there's some real good rock and there's some real crap too (same for any other genre). When you've sampled a fair amount of what that particular genre has to offer, you can conclude for yourself that you don't like it. It's that simple.
