Before being sacrificed upon the altar..., szebro1@gl.umbc.edu thus begged:

    >So, it appears that the only once-or-ever DT member who ever demanded to
    >look different than anyone else was everyone's beloved Kevin Moore.
    >Derek's wardrobe and stage antics do NOT make him "stick out like a sore
    >thumb" as you people are so find of saying. They INTENSIFIED the show,
    >and brought out the performance in all members of the band. That will
    >most definitely be missed in the upcoming incarnation of Dream Theater.

Yeah man... I love that INTENSITY... those pelvic thrusts... whoohaw...
I felt that strip club atmosphere... who's onstage?? Some lame ass
progrock/metal whatever band... forget them... who's this guy in the tight
shiny pants with the nice silk shirt grinding over those lava lamps??

Man, you don't know how many times I wanted to stick a dollar in his
keyboard... oh man... it was just so hot... who cares if he could play
keyboards or not... forget the music... it was all about his carnal
movements, the way he caressed those keys... oooooh yeah... man, he could've
    been playing polka...

Kevin Moore? Forget that wuss... he just played keys... who cares if he
played them really good... who cares if he looked like the rest of that
dumb band... who cares if the music was good... he didn't have that
INTENSITY... he didn't oooooze sex appeal... yeah... fuck that... it's all
    about stage antics...

Max your foulth mouthed vulgar language impresses NO one. The posts are not funny in the slightest. Your ragging on people cos they have a different opinion to you is a sure sign that the are an immature little boy who needs to grow up. I think you should seek some professional help. I seriously doubt that you are a Dream Theater fan, because no fan would speak to other fans like you do.

Please do us all a favour go away and don't post anymore of your verbal diahoria to this list. The other 1500 or so members of this list thank you in advance for this.

I offer two thoughts for reading: 1.) An analogy: If it's a rainy day, it's a rainy day. Some people don't like rainy days, but it's going to be a rainy day none the less. One has every right to complain and say it sucks and they don't like rainy days, but I think getting mad and calling each other names while fun is counterproductive and perhaps ultimately a waste of one's time. One who responds to such with the same IS the same - perception is reality (a jam or two ago, someone's response to someone else ended with "This is a Dream Theater fan list. And if anyone calles their music shit here, I'm going to your house to rape your sister." I agree with the message behind it, but that last part while perhaps meant it humorously offended me a bit). When you insult someone or try to make your point aggressively, the person your talking to doesn't care what you're saying - they'll only care that you're talking shit to them. Even if they deserve it. It's like someone yelling at you - do you think about what they're saying, or just think "shut the fuck up!"? Anyway, we are Dream Theater fans - we are not Dream Theater. They did what they think is right - it's like breaking up with someone. It may hurt one or more of the parties involved and friends as well, but it's life. Although there may be more to it, they seem to have left on decent terms. At least it wasn't ugly like Van Halen and Sammy (although I guess we have yet to see that). 2.) I liked Kevin Moore. Although my personal taste prefered Kevin,I like Derek too. He was perfect for the music of FII and sounded great on ACOS. I have yet to hear Jordan with DT, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it at least somewhat as well. My thoughts.

    Rock on Rob

    OK guys,

so I've become one of the select group of Jammers to catch Bernd and the boys live. There were at least two other Jammers present (if we include the celebrated Mr Johannsen), but I haven't seen anyone else post a review, so I'll make a stab at a review.

The concert took place at 'Le Zenith' in Paris, France on Saturday 16th Jan. The big headlining gig of Angra's tour of France and at a venue holding up to about 6000 (I believe). Informed sources claimed that there were around 4500 present that evening (including guests) and Superior were the ''special guest' and 3rd on the bill - not a bad little opportunity for the band to make themselves known to a wider audience and possibly the biggest audience they'd ever played in front of.

Unfortunately the soundchecks for Angra and Strato must have over-run for the doors opened 1/2 hour late, leaving Superior a mere 30 mins to prepare themselves for their spot at 7PM. I think that they started a little late, but the hall was reasonably full when the lights went out and the band launched into 'The Truth aint kind'. Unfortunately the sound wasn't perfect and I could hardly make out Bernd's guitar - though I could see that he was playing it. By the time the song came to a close, the engineers had obtained a better balance, but regardless of the sound problems, the French fans gave them a big, welcoming cheer.

Michael Tangermans's voice was every bit as good live as on record and 'Amok', 'Think' and 'Not with Me' gave plenty of further evidence of this. The band sound was sufficiently heavy and chunky enough to satisfy the crowd who bounced around and sang along to the music. All too soon it was time for 'Why?' and as the crowd swayed along to perhaps their most popular song, hundreds of souvenir 'Angra' cigarette lighters were held up. From where I was standing (about 15 metres from the stage) it all looked very impressive and one could see that the band were pleased with the crowd-reaction.

The band left the stage as the house lights cam back up. We'd seen a mere 26 minutes of Superior on stage, when we'd been originally promised 40- enough time for the band to make an impact but not enough time to really exploit it.

    ------------------------------------

As for Strato, I saw them two nights running with Mark Meztger at Strasbourg (5-600 people) and the Saturday night show in Paris. Both sets were identical, except that we got a encore on the Saturday night - 'Father Time'. using material mainly from 'Destiny' and 'Visions'. They play a set of their best songs - ' Destiny', 'SOS', 'Kiss of Judas', 'Will the sun Rise?' just as you've heard them on disc. The playing was excellent, though the band were a bit static on stage, singer Timo Koltipeti aside, but what the hell, it sounded fine and I thoroughly enjoyed them. They were also bowled over with the crowd reception, knowledge of the lyrics and singing. Absolutely excellent, if you like that style of metal.

Angra get bigger by the day, though I'm not as taken with 'Fireworks'; as I was with 'Holy Land' and the fact that songs from 'Fireworks' made up the majority of the set, meant that I didn't enjoy the shows quite as much as I had on the earlier occasions I'd seen them in concert. The solos in songs like 'Paradise' and 'Speed' slay me, but the songs as a whole don't, in the same was as 'Nothing to Say', 'Make Believe and 'Carolina IV' do. The old favourites were still there, but I would have made a few changes to the set order and setlist. Anyway the French love them and the feeling seems to be mutual! So being the big gig if the tour, we had fire-breathers, fireworks and 5 encores including two Iron Maiden covers with Bruce Dickinson joining in on vocals! OK the sound wasn't perfect, but it was a big event and one of the biggest metal gigs I've seen in a few years. Proof indeed that there is a market for this sort of metal.

Angra and Strato continue to tour together until the end of February and Superior will make an acoustic tour of France in a few weeks time.

Angra may also return to Europe in May to play some festivals (The Dynamo in Holland is a possibility) and some further dates - certainly in France and possibly elsewhere - catch 'em if you can.

i realize that as of late i haven't posted much of anything but derek flames.. it's just that i'm very tired of everyone defending that guy.. he was kicked out of DT for a reason.. i didn't want to bad mouth him when he was part of Dream Theater because he WAS a part of the band. it irritates me to see people comment on how sorry they are to see him go and all that.. the fact of the matter is that he had a regressive influence on dream theater..

"After our experiences of working with Jordan in LTE, we came to the decision that his playing, writing and personality was more representative of where we would like to take Dream Theater into the 21st century." Derek is obviously a good musician but did not adequately fit the hole left by kevin's absence or they wouldn't have given him the boot. i've always hated derek but was willing to affirm him as long as Dream Theater was.. now they're not so i let loose.. anyways.. it's possible my comments were out of line but that doesn't make derek any less lame. i don't like him as a person... viva la jordan!!

Like a drummer.... Hidden behind the set. Its all how you set up the stage and handle yourself for a performance.

I'm a drummer and guitarist myself, and stage presence is up to you. Not the instrument.

    Greetings fellow jamsters,

I just wanted to say thanks to ALL involved in this list for turning me on to some of the best music ever written.

Fates Warning: I love this band! they stand along side Dream Theater for all time favorites. Ray Alder is incredible! so is the rest of the band. Jim's music writing intrigues me.

    Symphony X: kicks my ass.

Superior: This band is quickly gaining ground. "Behind" just f*ckin' grooves, and Younique is starting to grow on me.

Royal Hunt: What a refreshing change of pace.

    LTE: Nuff said.

Vanden Plas: This band has a killer groove. Love the keys. But... The singer could be a little better.

Anyway... Thanks for all the great reviews, commentary and MP3's!

/Al tips his hat, and smiles :-)

P.S. I'm also desperately trying to get KorgX3 to resub. The Derek/Jordan thing has him rattled.

I just wanted to post one last time on this topic:

Al(?) I read your reply to my post and I understand where you're coming from abit more now. Granted, my post when you explained it, sounded derogatory to DT... I didn't mean it that way and stating that Evan was the fan and that I belonged to the Joni list was more of an explanation of where my perspective was rather than a slam on DT. Admittedly I'm not a big fan but that's due more to the fact and I just haven't heard enough to even begin to form an opinion.

I do know however, how much they appeal to Evan and how highly he regards them and this I respect... so that's where my remark on clothing came from.

True, clothing does maketh the man but I should have stressed that in regards to music... to me it didn't matter. I just felt that belittling a person in lieu of their clothing was harsh and baffling. To me as Music is 'entertainment' as well as art... there is a degree of exhibitionism as well as showmanship. So, artists who choose to be flamboyant are just giving the crowd a thrill. Yes, what I have seen of DT (Evan's videos and pictures) they appear casual, laid back and in their concerts it 'does' appear to be about the music... so hence my comment! (Thanks Andrew!!)

I will say that I shouldn't have been harsh back to you but the vehemence of your post threw me. I just couldn't believe you slammed me so brutally when in retrospect... all I did was ask a question. I guess this teaches me to be more careful about how I post... :-)

I felt I had to post to this List rather than just privately as I feel childish for giving into the nastiness.

So, yes I respect DT (What I have heard) and I respect your opinion and defence of the band you love.

Vanessa- learning a lesson and admitting to fault.

I refer you to "The Way It Used To Be," listen to the keyboard break in the middle. Yes, it's a flute/recorder sound. I wish that Derek had done more of this type of thing, but it's there.

]From: "Isaac Trumbo" <inferno_one@hotmail.com> > i hate derek and always have and have always said so!!! > anyone who supports him obviously hasn't read an interview with him.. > he admits openly to disliking prog and even dream theater..

Hey, "I Suck," here's a quote from Derek taken from an interview done by Greg Rule just before the release of FII,:

"Even when I was a sideman, the band always treated me like I was a member. One day we were on a ferry ride from Sweden to Finland, and I had a nice dinner with the band and the tour manager, and then they told me they wanted me to be a member. It was great, but I'll be honest... the next day I woke up and didn't feel any different, because they made me feel like a member the whole time." Lest you think Derek was blase about joining the band, though: "There aren't too many progressive bands on major labels anymore," he says, "so I consider this the ultimate keyboard gig."

Learn civility or shut up, okay? I promise to knock some sense into your goddamn head, should I ever get the chance.

Scott Sturdivant asked about a piece of music called "4:33" written by John Cage. This piece consists of three movements, none of which contain notes, only the word "Tacet," which means, in effect, silence. Cage wanted people to listen to the sounds happening around them and place a "frame" around those sounds, in which they could be accepted as music.

    That's all, Mark Peters swifty@auburn.net
