Derek wears flamboyant clothes; Derek gets lots of groupies. The others
    don't; they don't.

In Derek's situation, I can see why I'd be tempted to go slightly over the
    top with my stagewear. :-)

Derek's dirty, gritty Hammond sound during Just Let Me Breathe on OiaLT is
phenomenal. I absolutely adore that Hammond sound. If that Hammond sound
were a woman, I'd marry it.

DT need to get Ryo Okumoto from Spock's Beard to play Just Let Me Breathe,
and Jordan can do everything else.

BTW, what's the proper name for someone who plays the Chapman Stick? A
    Stickist? Sticker? Masochist?

    Graham

Okay, after reading Kyle McCabe's post I had to rethink how I decided to assign time signatures to the Take the Time Intro. In particular, the last bars of 9/8 being in compound (triplet) time instead of simple time. Kyle ALMOST had the ending. I figured out the ending theoretically (notes were right but time sigs were not).

In the closing bars of the intro, the band hits are being played in compound time (9/8 - dotted quarter note gets the beat) while the kick and synth bass are playing in simple time (4/4 - quarter note gets the beat). So in answer to Kyle's question about different tempos, in a way there are two tempos going on at the same time. The bass/kick notes sixteenth notes are equal to the ensemble hit's (snare/guitar) eighth note triplets. This means that the beats are lining up in different places (hence two different tempos at once). I didn't take a metronome to the track, but I'm pretty sure the 4/4 bass line starts out at 120. This means that the compound time (band hits) is going at 160. Low and behold, when the band all joins together in compound time in 12/8 after the intro, they are all about 160. The whole reason for the band hits to be in compound time over the bass/kick's simple time is to transition into the compound time 12/8 figure (first theme/riff) smoothly.

If you want to know how to convert a tempo value from simple to compound while keeping the sixteenth notes from the simple time equal to the eighth note triplets from the compound time - here ya go:

Simple Time BPM x 4 divided by 3 = Compound Time BPM If anybody wants to know WHY this formula works, ask and I will explain - but I don't want to get off subject here.

So during the TTT intro we have "colliding" time sigs as such:

4/4 - being kept by bass and kick alternating sigs - being kept by snare, guitar, keys, and cymbal hit

Now I will use "net" text to display the whole intro. What I did this time was stack the Kick/Bass 4/4 part on top of the alternating signatures of the snare/guitar ensemble hits so you can see how they line up against each other.

K - Kick drum being played as quarter notes to bass's 4/4 figure C - Cymbal hit and new key chord B - Bass Guitar X - Snare/Guitar ensemble hits

How many people would be interested (email me privately - not the jam) in starting a DT only music analysis mailing list? No talk about Derek's departure, no talk about similar bands, no talk about concert reviews. Just hardcore analysis of Dream Theater music. This can include what I did above, working out guitar, bass, key, or drum parts, or anything that may come with actual DT music analysis.

This would create a place for us music nerds to hang without bothering the non-musician DT fans. We also wouldn't have to scroll through 20 posts of Jordan vs. Bird :oP to get to the answer you were looking for.

I just got an idea! Since I'm not the only freak collector here I guess it's possible doing it!

Now when Derek is gone I think it would be cool and very worthy to collect all Nightmare Cinema and Nicky Lemons songs available, put 'em on MP3s and upload them somewhere (best if it would be one site).

Derek site already exists so it is a candidate but I'm not the person to ask! :) Christina ....?

I know folks out there loved those Nicky MP3s, so why not gettin' them together! Also, I never saw Nightmare Cinema MP3s, are there and recordings of NC gig??? --

Oh well, didn't mean to cause any controversy or anything... I think it's great that people have different tastes... But that doesn't mean that we can't express our opinions as to that taste right? I'm sure maX didn't mean to flame/bitch/whine etc... (which he didn't IMO), and me neither... I just replied to say I disagreed... That's all...

    Scott,

I'd say that I kinda understand why DT still play PMU... After all, it's their best-known song (well...) so I think every band would like to play those songs that everone knows and that get the crowd all warmed up. Besides, I do think that at an average DT concert it's not all hardcore fans. Some people may only know DT from PMU (although FII may have gotten them a new audience)...And finally: It's a DAMN good song!!:-)

On the other hand, I do agree that there are a lot of songs that are hardly ever played live (LSoaD, UAGM (completely), I don't even know about 6:00: do they play this still? And what about full Metropolis?).

Fair enough. It took some time for my wife to warm up to DT. Now she's a DT fanatic. I have a duplicate copy of "Awake" so I don't have to keep chasing it down. (Her favorite) She always proudly displays one of her DT shirts at concerts, regardless who is playing.

I was never thrilled with Derek's attire; however, I have never made derogatory comments about that. I simply thought and vocalized "he clashed." I've met Derek on several occasions, I think he's a blast. Nice guy, too. I will miss him.

*Shrug* I apologize. I can be just as big of an asshole as the next guy, I usually try to dish it out in moderation. I won't make any excuses for it. (The "Mother's little helper"- "leaking battery" comment was a bit much) It was kinda my demented way of saying: "I wonder why she's so irritated?"
