I'd recommend "The Kindness of Strangers", as it is sorta the midpoint for SB's style. You'd also be okay with either "Day For Night" or "Beware of Darkness". I'd shy away from "The Light" at first (excellent disc, but harder to get into).

Partha said: > as far as Testament goes, just picked up Demonic yesterday....and haven't > yet heard it, but the rough death metal growl concept isn't making me wanna > rush home and throw it on......

Well, this album isn't really representative of their other material. It is BY FAR their least melodic disc, and also has almost zero in the way of guitar leads (they basically had no lead guitarist for this album, because James Murphy wasn't able to be on it). However, their new "The Gathering" disc rules. =)

OK, first off, I did what the proctologist ordered and listened to APSoG, and although I found the result hilarious, I fear I may never be able to listen to that part seriously again. Second, I couldn't help but notice in the To: part of the header, if you take the first four letters and the last two letters of the reversed Dream Theater, you get RETARD, and for the New Englanders among us, you can easily make RETAHD by using the h in Theater instead of the r in Dream :)

I went to the first show of the Scorpions/Motley Crue tour. It rocked except for the opeing act. They were called something like Fake Bastard and were from Canada. Basically the lead singer said the US sucks, Wash DC sucks, Americans suck, everyone at the show should commit suicide. Crazy.

The scorps/crue were both great though.

Hi. here's probably more information than you need but here goes. Candlemass' last album "dactylis Glomerata" was released in 1998. It was more of a forced album though, as the main songwriter Leif Edling was forced to put the album out by his label...anyway most of the songs from the album were intended to be songs for his side project "Abstrakt Algebra" (that's why the songs sound like those off his first A.A. album). He put together a few other songs and released the album in accordence to his contract...the album is great imo, but it definately sounds different to anything else the band has put out. I do not think they will be doing anthing else anytime soon either.

as for earlier albums definately go for "Nightfall" and "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus" (<--- The most Classic Doom metal Album of all Time) Nightfall is much in the same vein as "Tales" and Epicus just simply rules (different singer, but still unbelievable).

the album with "Mirror,Mirror" on it is "Ancient Dreams", a great album too, but not in the same league as the above 3.

The band also has a few side projects, the most prominant being "Memento Mori" which has the vocalist from the "Tales" era Candlemass on all but one (perhaps 2?) albums. they are in the same vein but a bit more progressive. The two main guitarist's from the "Tales" era combined their efforts again in a band called "Zoic" and of course there is the above mentioned "Abstrakt Algebra". hope that helps.

Maybe Hamm is related to Stuart Hamm... j/k :-))) Given that this CD is supposed to be a more melodic style of metal than Death, I only have one concern about it. One thing I love about Death is the "quirky" riffs that Schuldiner usually writes. That, combined with the fact that vox and song melody are often of secondary importance, usually lends itself pretty well to some pretty wild playing from everybody involved. I guess what I wonder is, if melody's gonna be more important on this CD, is everybody gonna be holding back for the sake of the song? Or is it gonna be more of the let-'er-rip mayhem that we've heard on the last few Death CDs? That said, I also have to add that I like EVERYTHING else I've heard about this CD, and I will find a way to get my hands on a copy when it comes out, even if I have to descend into mail-order hell to do it:).

I was sorry to hear about Schuldiner dealing with a tumor, even though he mentioned that the prognosis is good. > ------------------------------ > From: "Pat Sullivan" <psull@ici.net> > > I think I have to agree with Nick on this one. I can think of a few other bands that lots of people on this list have flipped over, which I find pretty bland or boring or whatever. I'm not gonna name 'em, because I'm a coward. (I also don't wanna end up like that Spock's Beard guy, hehehe.) > ------------------------------ > From: Jens Johansson <jens@panix.com> > > Good idea, but I would substitute with Guillory, Hellborg, Castronovo, and > Thordendahl. [good review about Meshuggah's Chaosphere deleted] I got this CD at the same time as Destroy Erase Improve. I took to DEI right away. Chaosphere, to its credit, has taken me longer to appreciate and I find myself now listening to it more often than any of their other CDS. I think it just overwhelmed me at first. The full-on assault on the ears combined with the mind-bendingly difficult-to-follow riffs (the polyrhythmic drumming was no help either, hehehe) just proved a bit much, I guess, especially compared with the more pleasant-to-the-ears (hehe) stuff on DEI (and None before it). Listening to the CD repeatedly has definitely helped, though, and as I get more familiar with it, this CD starts to sound better and better all the time. Except for the last few minutes of the last track. I could do without that:). Without question, the most intricate stuff they've put out to date. And that's really the main reason I keep playing the CD.

    > > Then again it's also very crisply executed, and there are enough complex > mathematical rhytmical structures hidden that I found new things even after > four or five listens. It's an integer-math shred-fest (but not in the Christ. I'll be finding new things even after 50 listens. There is just a lot of shit. Somebody even told me that, on some of the songs, you can hear Haake playing his standard 4/4 over whatever polyrhythm, and tapping a pattern in another time-sig on one of his cymbals. I'm not even close to being able to pick up on that yet:). Just trying to follow some of the riffs still gives me a headache. > widdly-widdly sense, the solos are very unique-sounding -- like Holdsworth > meets, maybe, a very musical Robert Fripp). Not "listen to what my fingers > can play", rather, "listen to what my mind can think up." > > Meshuggah, they're from the far North of Sweden by the way. PROGRESSIVE! > RECOMMENDED! You took an interesting angle on this CD. IMO, Meshuggah could be called "progressive" just on the basis of their sound (even on the past few CDs). Two seven-string guitars and a bass spewing some of the heaviest, most wicked riffs around, the Holdsworth-influenced solos, combined with the awesome fusion-influenced drumming and the polyrhythms, and that gives Meshuggah its very own little corner in the metal world. What a band.

You probably just don't care for blues and therefore, bands with lots of blues. Do you like eric clapton? I bet you don't.

Clapton and Floyd are two examples of really popular artists/bands, that almost everyone likes except me, including people who like lots of the same music I do. In both cases, these guys have something that I really like, but not enough to be a huge fan. Floyd: some of their stuff is really incredible. but for me, just a fraction really. I mostly agree with pat here. it's monotonous, and in this case, the monotone is that slow, bluesy, thing they do. feh. too slow and boring. I will say that the older, and therefore more slow and boring I get, the more I seem to appreciate them.

I saw clapton in concert last night, and I'd see him again anytime. but only if sheryl crow will still be there. :)

Again, it's that bluesy thing he does. I hate blues! in his case, the slice of awesome is the soloing, but that's gonna sell me the albums, I tell you what.

At the show, bob dylan made a surprise appearance. 10,000 people freaked out. I feel really bad, because I probably should have stood up or something, but here's another guy who's music I don't care for - for him, it's of course the lyrics, and like with billy joel's great lyrics, that's never been enough for me to like the artist. Music first.

speaking of which, now back to VH1's storytellers: behind the legend's timeline.
