I feel sorry for the people who don't enjoy Pink Floyd and some
of the other bands mentioned. Synching Dark Side and Wizard of
Oz is one of the greatest musical experience ever, comparable only
to chilling to SOYCD on a dark summer night (whether your on
    acid or not).
I find it difficult to believe that people also don't like blues when
basically all rock, especially in guitar terms, stems directly from
    blues.

Agreed! When I first heard that opening riff from WtWB, I instantly
thought of FW. The riff does sound remarkably like a riff from APSOG IV
    by FW.

Another thing with LTEII, there's a part in 914 at around 2:51 where
JR's key solos take on a remarkable impersonation of a chorus from a
Nirvana song. I can't rememeber what the name of it is, but it goes
something like, "He's the one, and he likes to sing his song, and he
likes to shoot his gun, and it goes by what it means, goes by what it
means and I say yeah....". Check it out.

Also, the intro of Another Dimension seems to have the same vibe to it
as JLMB, i.e. same structure and instrumentation at the right time.

    Something to ponder (or not),

    Luke.

Hi, I recently acquired an original silver of the Dream Theater boot "Infinite Dream", so I can now part with my CD-R version of it. I'll give it to the first person to e-mail me, I'll give you my address, and you send me postage, ($3.20 priority, or $2.50 regular). Since it's a pain to send stuff outside the USA, I'm gonna offer this to US residents only. I figure it's a good way for somebody to start a collection!

To be honest, I don't listen to much blues anymore. But the fact of the matter is I used to play jazz saxophone in H.S./college, and did a lot of blues stuff back in my H.S. days - and I liked it. But I didn't like Pink Floyd then, either. :-)

I liked playing the blues because it felt very liberating to me. Once I learned the blues scale, it freed me up to explore the music, rather than the notes ("is this next note going to be 'in tune'?"). I found it much easier to express myself musically that way. Again, though - just because I enjoyed playing it, doesn't mean other people enjoyed *listening* to it. I think that's the case with me and PF.

Alchemy X is a great band! You can check out a song of theirs over at my site.

I would say more of the music is Progressive. Maybe the particular song was more metal, but if you heard the whole album you would probably say its progressive.

Their website is still under construction... So for now, check out the mp3!

Actually, I *love* the blues. But there's good blues and bad blues - Stevie Ray Vaughn is good (read: so friggin' amazing it's sick) blues. I think Clapton has some good blues, but has some bad blues as well. The cool thing about blues is that really good blues artists can just make you lay back and enjoy the music... they make it just flow (Stevie was a master at this, as are a couple of local guys up here in Boston). Plus, if you get a REAL rockin' blues dude up there, then he's basically MC at a great party. :)

    Hey

To all those who have only heard "The Wall", you may want to give it another try by checking out the movie. I always thought it was a good album, but after seeing the film, it put it in a whole new perspective. Part of it is actually based on Roger Water's life, who, like "Pink" lost his father in WWII. I found it to be very emotional. Even if you don't like the music, I think the movie can still be appreciated.

Also, I've been searching the Web for information on what Gilmour, Mason and Wright have been up to the last few years, and what's in the future for PF. I wasn't able to find anything new since the release of Pulse. Anyone know what's up with the guys?

    One more question:

I've seen the term "neo-classical" used on the list many times. I was wondering if someone could give me a definition on it. My guess it that it refers to rock/metal with "classical" music influences. Any more to it?

    Happy 4th Eric

News Update.......July 1st,1999 .....The Quiet Room

Hello few yet loyal fans of The Quiet Room. As usual the news update is long overdue. But a lot has happened over the past 6 months, so there should be a lot to talk about. As many of you already know, Mike Rice is no longer in The Quiet Room. He decided to quit the band shortly after we returned from our tour with Iced Earth. It was an awkward adjustment for us. Mike was in the band almost right from the beginning. But certain personality conflicts were becoming more and more prominent and difficult to deal with. I think we'll all be happier in the long run. We replaced Mike shortly after he left. Our new drummer is Graeme Wood, formerly of Industrial Eden (Shadow of Doubt), a long time friend of ours. He is a great drummer, but has a different style than Mike. I'd say that overall he's a bit more intricate and a bit heavier. He uses a combination of acoustic and electronic drums, a lot of polyrhythms and has feet that most drummers would kill for. It's been a lot of fun working him into the band and we're very excited about our future with him. Speaking of the future, we're finally ready to record our next CD. We had hoped to be finished with it already, but between the Iced Earth Tour and the personnel change, we were set back a bit. But the time is booked and we will be recording from mid August through the end of September. Watch for a release early in 2000. We've had mixed reactions to our new material. A lot of people really like it and some are more partial to Introspect. Metal Edge compared us to Korn. I really don't think that is a fair comparison, we're certainly not aspiring to sound like Korn. Overall the music is heavier and more groove-oriented, but retains its progressive roots. We've been trying to incorporate more modern elements, such as electronic percussion, off-the-wall keyboard sounds, and mixing very heavy guitar parts with delicate, melodic piano lines. But there's still a lot of intricate writing with some counterpoint and harmonies between the guitars and keyboards. The songwriting, which Introspect was noted for, has gotten even stronger. The vocals are much heavier, but still melodic in spots. And there are some great harmonies there as well. You'll have to judge for yourself when the album comes out. Love it or hate it, we're very pleased with how we've grown and very excited about our new music. A list of the song titles is at the end of this letter. That's about all that's new in The Quiet Room. Once the recording is finished we'll start working on finding a tour for 2000. Hopefully this time we'll cover a little more ground than we did last winter. Thanks again for all of your support. Hope to hear from you soon!

    Hi

If you never heard any Pink Floyd, then you should check out PULSE.

IMO, it's the best live album ever produced on earth. It's incredible.

PULSE also contains some of the best Pink Floyd songs and the complete DSOTM.

DSOTM : Dark Side Of The Moon

Pink Floyd are one of the few bands that after exsisting for about 30 years, they still make incredible albums on high level. I just say "The Devision Bell".
