Soulfly puts on a great live show. Not the type of music I'd buy, but man
did they put on a show, very tight, very energetic. Good stuff. :)

DREAM THEATER drummer MIKE PORTNOY spent the 4th of July weekend at
Millbrook studios laying down tracks for his latest all-star side project.
Joining Portnoy are MARILLION bassist Pete Trewavas, Neal Morse, lead
vocalist/multi-instrumentalist for L.A.'s SPOCK'S BEARD, and FLOWER KINGS
mastermind Roine Stolt on guitar. The album will reportedly be out on Metal
Blade. In related news, Dream Theater are scheduled to begin mixing their
new studio album with David Bottrill (TOOL, KING CRIMSON, PETER GABRIEL) at
Electric Ladyland studios in New York on July 15th. According to Portnoy,
the band are "on track for an October-ish release" with an extensive world
    tour to follow.

September looks to be an expensive month for fans of FATES WARNING as both
mainman JIM MATHEOS and vocalist RAY ALDER unveil solo albums. Matheos'
all-instrumental Away With Words, a follow-up of sorts to his highly
acclaimed 1994 debut First Impressions, will hit the streets on September
9th and also features FW drummer Mark Zonder, jazz/fusion bassist Michael
Manring (MICHAEL HEDGES, etc.), and violinist Charlie Bisharat, who's worked
with everyone from JOHN 'E.T.' TESH and SHADOWFAX to KITARO. Meanwhile,
Alder's DEFTONES-flavored ENGINE project has the singer join forces with FW
pal/ARMORED SAINT bassist Joey Vera (who also engineered and produced the
album), AGENT STEEL axeman Bernie Versailles, and drummer Pete Parada (FACE
TO FACE). Engine will be in stores September 21st. Also, Alder recently
hooked up with L.A.'s COSMOSQUAD, featuring new UFO lead guitarist Jeff
Kollman, bassist Barry Sparks and drummer Shane Gaalaas from MSG, to track
'Murders In The Rue Morgue' for Meteor City's upcoming IRON MAIDEN tribute
    record.

Well, the closest disc to "The Gathering" would probably be their "Low"
disc (also the only other one featuring James Murphy on guitar). It's
generally very heavy (not quite as heavy, but close), the vox are
perhaps just a bit cleaner (not much), but overall I think the
songwriting is a bit better on the new one.

The only other super-heavy crunch-fest would be "Demonic". This one is
rather different though. They have basically no leads on this disc
(there is no lead guitarist really, this one just has Eric Peterson),
and it is definitely much less melodic than "Low" or "The Gathering".
This is essentially a full-blown deathmetal album. Oh, one cool thing:
    Gene Hoglan on drums.

The only other discs I have are "The Ritual" and "Practice What You
Preach". Both of this are less-crunchy than the above discs (they
still have balls though). They also have clean vox, and are thrashy -
ala older Metallica. "The Ritual" is the mellower of the two, and is
almost comparable with Metallica's "Black" disc (a bit more of a
mainstream sound, but still quite good).

I've also heard good stuff about "Souls of Black", but haven't listened
myself. Oh, and the hardcore Testament fans RAVE about "Live at the
Fillmore" (I haven't heard this one yet either, though).

So John, I guess I'm basically recommending "Low" for you.

    Ahoy,

While most of us are all digging into LTE2, myself included, some of you might also want to check out the new album from Dave Weckl, entitled, 'Synergy'. Those jazz players out there probably know of this incredible jazz/fusion drummer already and have probably heard some of his previous releases or other albums on which he is a guest. Like the album before it, 'Rhythm of the Soul', the band consists of basically the same members and is even more tight than before (if you can imagine that). The songs are a little more diverse and in a very good way. The recording is excellent and the musicianship is incredible. Even those of you that aren't into jazz or fusion should at least give this band a listen. This CD is just exceptionally well done and I can't really say anymore about it. If you see it in stores, pick it up and check it out - I think you'll be blown away!

Also are there any jammers on here that live in or around Orlando Florida? I will be starting school down there this fall. Anyways just thought I would ask.

For over two months TNMS has been dead -or, at least, unreachable-. No one I know knows what happened.

In the meantime... last week I set up a replacement list in my server - "Transient National Midnight Star". Its purpose is to keep the Rush discussion alive while good old TNMS' future is uncertain.

To subscribe, send a message to tnms@majordomo.webhost.cl stating "subscribe tnms YOUREMAILHERE" in the body (substitute "YOUREMAILHERE" with your actual address, of course).

And DO tell everyone you know about this list - we can't have much discussion with few subscribers...

    Hi, folks:

The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety at <http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm>. Meanwhile, here's an excerpt specifically of interest to Ytsejammers.

On our Magna Carta page <http://www.artist-shop.com/magna> we have a forthcoming release for mid July from former Dream Theater keyboardist, Derek Sherinian called Planet X. Joining Derek on Planet X are drummer Virgil Donati, bassist Tony Franklin and guitarist Brett Garsed. While construction of Planet X proceeded at a deceptively Californian pace, the end result is a truly inspiring return to progressive rock values with an exotic twist that is a combination of Derek's chosen weapon and the flash personality Derek has come to be. And the entire wardrobe spills out on the record's very first track, an eighteen minute whopper called Atlantis Suite. Other highlights include State of Delirium which again finds Derek stepping outside keyboard talk into the world of the total rock experience. "That's a really cool song. The main keyboard part reminds me of Joe Perry on slide guitar, jamming with Black Sabbath. And then the 'b' section reminds me of Kashmir." Much of the rest Derek sees in terms of Jeff Beck, specifically records like There And Back. Overall I have to say that this CD has a more progressive sound than I had anticipated and I quite liked it, especially the Atlantis Suite!

And, of course, LTE2 is now out, but you all knew that already.

On our New Imports page <http://www.artist-shop.com/catalog/imports/new.htm> you'll find the following:

PLATYPUS-WHEN PUS COMES TO SHOVE Japanese edition of 1998 album by prog metal supergroup featuring Ty Tabor of King's X with Dream Theater members John Myung & Derek Sherinian, and Rod Morgenstein of Dixie Dregs & Winger. 10 tracks.

Hey all, last night was killer here is my review of the concert. The first opening band was by the name of hatebredd. they were an ok typical average metal band. Everything sounded the same, though. The bass was turned WAY to high. Neurosis was next. I have to say, they ARE THE SHITIEST THING I"VE SEEN OR HEARD EVER. I would have enjoyed The backstreet boys more than htese guys. The were a five piece with a highly tecnical keyboardist who would just bang his fists on the one spot. Wow, I could do that, I bet my dog could too. The riffs were slower than the speed at which paint dries, very boring, no NRG. Time passed faster talking to my friends than when thses guys were on stage. I think I've done enough damage, on to the show.. Soulfly came out with a lot of intensity. Max has still got the fire, just like his old Sepultura stuff. they played Refuse/Resist, straight hate and Roots Bloody Roots along with all the good Soulfly shit. I got two bass picks from the bassist. Who zoned in on me and we were singing directly to each other. I have never connected to anyone at a concert before. I give Soulfly an A+. If they come, go see them. you will become "part of the Tribe" and you will "Bring Da Shit"

Oh yeah, I got LTE2 today finally from CDNOW. it is all it was hyped to be from you all who have it already.

    > Scott McGill's hand farm was playing when we got there. I had never heard any music from them before but I was more then amazed. Chris Eike is now a part of this band, (formerly of Finneus Gauge and so was Scott of course. Vic Stevens on drums was also phemominal, don't remember seeing such a good drum solo so close like that, there was only like 40 ppl. > > In the intermission, I met with the band, it was great, got my cd autographed and talked with the boys. Chris said he is trying to get something going with Jordan Rudess, some sort of side project, I think he mentioned something with Mike Portnoy as well, I'm not sure if this would only be for fun. I also met the Nathan Mahl singer/keyboardist Guy LeBlanc, very nice guy. This band was awesome, I can't believe they are from my hometown and I just discovered them recently, I suggest their latest cd to anyone on here, A clever use of shadows, no wonder it's #1 on this prog site I saw (Galactic Radio I think). I also heard Nathan Mahl made a good impression at NearFest.

Hey, Scott McGill's hand farm and Nathan Mahl both played at NEARfest and they were both incredibly awesome. My friend bought the Nathan Mahl CD and he says it rocks. We got to talk to Guy LeBlanc too. He's a cool guy. It turns out that NEARfest was their first concert in the U.S. of A. That was a very very good first impression. And speaking of cool guys, We also talked to Scott McGill. That guy was so cool! We talked to him for a pretty long time, and he was like making fun of people and going "Yo Yo keepin' it real" Does Finneus Gauge sound anything like Hand Farm? Because some of those chords that Scott was playing were waaay over my head. But it was still pretty damn kewl.

On another note, is anyone out there familiar with The Magic Elf? Their drummer is AMAZING. He has a very unique snare sound, almost that of Billy Cobham on Spectrum. But they advertise as High Intensity Instrumental Rock. And i agree. I'm trying to talk to Rob LaDuca to get them on NEARfest 2000. anyone who wants to help is free to do so.

    2. SAVATAGE Are the new German reissues with bonus track remastered?

    3. OZRIC TENTICLES-CURIOUS CORN Included with this cd is a little perferated picture thing. What is it?

    Thanks, Trevor
