My 2 cents: If you have got either "Jester Race or Whoracle, don't bother to
buy "Colony". "Colony" was a major disappointment for me as it sounds just
like the previous 2 albums. True "In Flames" fans is up for a real anticlimax.

I can only speak from personal experience, but I've got a Panasonic that I've used just about every day--all day--at work for the past 5 years, and it never skips on CDs... unless I bang on the desk, of course... :)

Added lots of info on Ray Alder's "Engine" album, a new MIDI file for The Ivory Gate Of Dreams and news that Ray sang the track "Murders In The Rue Morgue" for an upcomming Iron Maiden tribute album. The band he hooked up with on this track is Cosmosquad. If you haven't checked these guys out yet, do it now at: http://fyreshowcase.com/cosmosquad/ Their debut album is a killer instrumental release...

Couldn't agree me. Along with the new Lemur Voice CD - 'Divided' it's keeping LTE2 in its jewel case.

Can't say I thought the Digipack was well designed. I ripped my cover trying to get the booklet out. Maybe I'm just clumsy, though :-))

Got your ticket for the Beard in London yet Graham? II have - even though I was distinctly 'underwhelmed' by D4N - live should be another thing though.

And IMO for anyone new to in flames, or whos gonna buy a first time album, you need to go with either jester race or whoracle... hell im a big fan, and own those two, and i havent gotten used to Colony yet...and its not growing on me... anyone interested should really stay away from it...and go with Jester race imo..

I second that comment, me and my 2 brothers were given a panasonic portable each about 4 years ago, and we each still have ours...the only thing thats been replaced are the headphones...

I've decided that I just won't buy anything from Sony unless I absolutely have to. Their discmans are pure and utter SHIT! I've had two and the reason I bought the second was because the 1st was a gift and I treated it pretty rough (this was back when they first came out too) I've decided that I'm just gonna get one of those really really really ( I mean like 19.95) cheap ones next time because I forked out over a 100 bucks for this sony I have now (with ESP-2 and shit shit...) and it didnt last for very long... and it always skips.

If your looking for a solution like I am... where you want one player that you can take with you in the car.. keep with you on the desk and take with you on trips there isnt much of an option. unless someone can point me to a QUALITY CHEAP cd player portable...

    ANYONE??

some solution that I heard worked for my forst one for a while before it died. if your cd player skips, turning it on its side seems to help... don;t ask me how.. but it seemed to help. I also hear that the laser gets out of alignment pretty easily and that accounts for the skipping and the inablity of the player to locate the disc.

solution? buy cheap ones and throw them away?

I dont like doing this, I still believe that I should be able to buy a product and expect a decent life out of it. That any company that sells products that predictably break should be held accountable by their customers and put out of business... yeah right... sony..out of business....

consumer education... much needed in the US.

Feel free to post to the 'jam if you feel it's > info we all can use. I recommend getting a Panasonic portable CD player. That's what I have now. I bought it in January '97. Since then, I've dropped it once (or was it twice? don't recall now), and I've generally played it for 4 to 8 hours each day. No problems. The ONLY flaw I can think of with this thing is that every 6 months or so, it skips 2 or 3 times on a CD. I use this lens-cleaner CD thing on it, and everything's cool again. Oh yeah, this player doesn't have anti-skip, because I was a cheapskate when I bought it. I should add, though, that I don't put this thing through a whole lot of abuse. I occasionally carry it in my back-pack somewhere, but it generally stays at home. There's another student in my department who I guess uses exactly the same CD player I have (I know it's also a Panasonic, I just don't know if his model number's the same). I watched him drop it (on a carpeted floor, mind you), pick it up, put the CD back in, and keep playing it. I asked him what he thought of his player, and he said that he's had it for a couple of years and he loves it. FYI, the model number on this player is SL-S145. It's a few years old, so I'd recommend looking for a newer Panasonic model.

    Hey folks...

My live mp3 server has been updated with two special shows.

The first is Symphony-X's 6/23/98 show from Japan. Very good quality and an excellent setlist.

The next will only be available for a very limited time. It's the raw soundboard takes from Queensryche's 4/27/92 taping of MTV Unplugged. It's the entire taping including multiple takes of some songs and treats like only the second (and last, actually) "Anybody LIstening?". Get this while you can.

So here's the total list of shows available, in their entirety.

    Bela Fleck - 4/5/98 Dream Theater - 12/3/97 and 5/9/98 Medeski, Martin, Wood - 11/15/98 Pink Floyd - 2/28/80 Queensryche - 4/29/95 and 4/27/92 Symphony-X - 6/23/98

Soon to be put up are another Dream Theater show, another Queensryche show (Empire era), a King Crimson show, and a Kansas show. Look for this stuff sometime in the next couple of weeks. Enjoy!

The new Therion, Crowning of Atlantis is really good if you like Theli and Vovin. 10 tracks. 5 operatic vocals, 2 halford-esque vocals, 3 live tracks from the last tour including the kick-ass first song off Theli.

I can see a repeating pattern... which indeed shows that the lens had turned dusty and needed cleaning. ;-)

The same thing happened to my Sony Dickman as well, and I thought about the warranty and all, but as soon as I had cleaned the lens, no more problems. Maybe you should try that, helps often. ;-)

The Leitz cleaning kit worked for me. Your mileage may vary. Computer shops sell those nifty little things. :-)

Has anyone (Neil?) picked up the new Tiamat disc "Sumerian Cry"? I saw it and noticed that they are no longer with Century Media but some label that I am not familiar with. Were they dropped or did they leave CM of their own free will? Anybody have details? Also, any opinions on the new disc would be appreciated. Started to pick it up but got Opeth's "My Arms, Your Hearse" instead. Damn, that CD rocks!

You payed for them! It's not your fault they fucked up... If Sony is giving you shit gear, complain. Jump up and down.

Secondly, on the RIO thing... I'd recommend a Mini Disc player over the RIO. I don't know how the prices compare, but the discs hold about the same amount of music, and the compression used on Mini Discs is supposed to sound a lot better than MP3. If you're prepared to listen to slightly lower quality sound in order to get a reliable portable music source, what about a high end walkman? Record the music on high quality tapes, get yourself a walkman with Dolby... This should be cheaper than a RIO, and from what I've seen of Mini Disc player prices here in Australia, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than MD...

Anyway, just a bit of food for thought. There are plenty of people on this mailing list who know a lot more about audio gear than I do, so I'm sure someone can give you some good advice about what to get.

Keep on jammin', be it from CD, tape, Mini Disc... whatever!
