Actually Sumerian Cry is a really really old Tiamat disc.
Their new one is titled Skeleton Skeletron, or something like that
    and its due for august...

This must have been a re-issue then b/c it had (c) 1999 on it!
If it's old, then it's more in the death metal vein? I haven't heard
    anything pre-"Clouds".

    Hi all

Shane Hunziker asked about the new Taimat album
"Summerian Cry". New? Fraid not. It was the first album
they put out after changing their name from Treblinka.
Very old, very black Tiamat. The new album is called
"Skelton Skeletron" and is due in mid-August. As far as
I know, the band is still with Century Media. This is
one of the albums I'm really looking forward to this
year. For more information, take a peek at Tiamat's
    semi-official page at http://www.thegrid.net/tiamat/

Portable CDs. At work I use an old Saba portable. It's
now about 5 years old, runs 5 - 6 hours every day,
has had coffee spilled on it, cost about DM 100 (or
US $ 50) and has always delivered the goods with no
problems. I threw away the dinky in-the-ear phones
that came with it, and I have been happily using
Sennheiser HD 475 headphones for quite a time. Possibly
not everybody's cup of tea, but it keeps me reasonably
    subdued.

New reviews coming soon. Sundown's latest offering "Glimmer" is somewhere
    between Rammstein-Lite and Die
Krupps. "Mercury" by the Norwegian band Madder Mortem
is a must for fans of The 3rd And The Mortal, and
Liechtenstein's (where the hell is that?) contribution
to my CD collection, in the form of "Der Untergang von
Tristona" by the band WeltenBrand is simply beautiful
    gothic/dark/wave.

A question for Canadian jammers. Does anybody know if
the band Moist are still around/recording? I've got the
albums "Silver" and "Creature" (both thoroughly
recommendable), and I'd be very interested in getting
some more of their stuff if it exists. Let me know.

More wisdom from Neil after a heavy weekend: if you wake
up with a screaming headache, and you've got a mouthful
of carpet and you're surrounded by empty beer cans, then
    it's morning.

    stay safe and happy listening

I've never actually heard a mini disc, so this is strictly hearsay, but
isn't the codec for mini discs somewhat less than ideal as well? The
quality of mp3's found the net varies a lot, but a well done mp3 can be
very close in quality to cd. I think that they'd be very comparable to
mini disc in that sense. Advantages of the Rio would include: computer
interface (for archiving and retrieving music), small size, no moving parts
(tolerant to shakes and bumps, and will not wear out on you), and it's
trendy and cool and looks neat =P. Not to mention that mini discs are
probably on their way out, having never really caught on, thanks largely to
the recording industry and their monopolistic control of delivery devices.
However, Rio and similar toys are really not at a very good price point
yet. Wait another generation or two (say until Christmas) and you'll get a
much better product, and probably for considerably less money.

I just want to let you all know, yes I *am* aware that the server has been
up and down, and my host has technicians looking into what may be causing
it. Right now, http://www.mikeportnoy.com is online and working properly.
Something made the server crash this morning, we;re not sure what, but
we are talking to our host about preparing for this larger volume of traffic.

Thanks to everyone who has visited the site! And also thank you for your
patience while I try to work out the bugs and get things running smooth.

We're getting a HUGE volume of email coming in from the "Ask Mike" section
of the site, but some of it is not even questions. Just wanted to let you guys
know that if you have just a COMMENT for Mike, you can leave in the FORUM, and
he will definitely see it! If you do happen to use the "Ask Mike" feature,
    please just
try to make it a direct question, that way you'll have better chances of

My parents are planning on getting my soon-to-be-twelve-year-old brother a
set of drums for his birthday next month (which, of course, means I'll also
have a set on which to teach myself...watch out, Mike Portnoy!). They're
looking for an all-around quality set obviously, but one that's also cheap
(dunno their pricerange). If anyone has any suggestions I could pass onto
them on what (drum/cymbal types, brand names, etc.) should be bought, or
warnings on what shouldn't, they and I'd really appreciate it. Private
    E-mail's prolly best.

As a side note, has anyone ever noticed that Majesty and Dream Theater
share a lot of the same song titles?

It's always kool when a new Modern Drummer magazine gets
delivered to me in the mail. But this months issue is just
a little better. In their Critique section this month a
few prog releases were reviewed. Among them was LTE2 which
recieved a glowing review (way to go mikey!!!) and a review
for the Spocks Beard album. Wow this is kool I thought and
kept on reading. To my surprise there was another review
on Dali's Dilemma. I am glad to see that all these guys
are getting the recognition they deserve. At the end of
the magazine they always show who will appear in the next
months issue... Next month, Tomas Haake of Meshuggah, hell

    Hello, there.

    I don't recommend you'll get Sony's portable CD players again. I don't
feel like writing what is wrong with the Sony portable CD player in
details, but some parts which are set inside of it and the Walkman
don't seem to have good qualities because of manufacturing process of
them. Other Sony products seem to be okay, though.

I recommend Panasonic's portable CD player. Now I use Panasonic. I've
dropped that twice by mistake, but it is still alive...:).

heh. I thought it was great. Maybe a little drug out (actually it was only
4 hours after the commercials were cut out), but SK's never been a person to
get to the point. :) In the end it was a conflict of good vs. evil where
evil wins. Could they have chosen different? Could good have won? That's
what I love about SK's stuff. He leaves you hanging like that.

Anyway, I'd watch it again. :)

I really don't understand the Sony-flaming...I've had a Sony D-E401 (ESP-2 n' stuff) since october last year and as long as i keep the juice-supply (batteries) up and running I have no problem whatsoever. I take my Sony mountainbiking, walking, running and it will only skip if I drop something like a Steinway on it! It sometimes skips on very mistreated discs, though, but then again, I've never cleaned it. And it can keep playing for, like, 12 hours (w/o ESP2) on two Duracell AA batteries. And, BTW, no, Sony's NOT paying me to write this :) Someone asked if we had trouble logging into MP's site...well, no, it all went very smoothly...good idea with the voice-messages! Let's just, as someone else implied, hope he doesn't go Sherinian on us :)

Well, that's it. Take care now, bye-bye then

I've had a Sony 20-second Discman for two or three years now with ZERO problems whatsoever (it even lasts 10 hours on batteries with ESP on). I take it on trips, walking, running, biking, etc, and it's taken some abuse. I've never cleaned the lens (bad, Dave, bad!), but it still never skips unless I drop it from 10 feet onto cement. I couldn't recommend it more! Maybe it's just this model, though, because my previous Sony Discman died within 10 months. I don't see what everyone's problem is... :)

I'd second the endorsement of Panasonic. Never had a cd player by them, but their walkman is very durable.

"Steve Vai=92s new solo record, once tentatively titled =93Where The Wild Things Are=94 but now renamed =93The Ultra Zone=94, will be in stores September 7th! With musicians Mike Keneally, Mike Mangini, Robin DiMaggio, Philip Bynoe, Bryan Beller, Japanese pop heroes B=92z and more, Steve comprised his seventh solo record of new tracks and tracks originally intended for the special =93Elusive Light & Sound=94 recordings for the upcoming box set (no release date on that yet). The Japanese version will feature a bonus track called =93Selfless Love=94, which Steve wrote for his mother, and other titles include =93The Blood And Years=94, =93Frank=94, =93Jibboom=94, =93The Silent Within=94, =93Lucky Charms=94, and =93Asian Sky=94. It=92s nearly 70 minutes of pure Vai, and will be in stores Sept 7 on Epic/Sony. A tour will follow, and dates will be posted in the Tour Dates section."

About sony.. Ive heard a lot of bad things... but I guess I was lucky. I got my Sony discman in 1993. Its been dropped more than three feet 20 or more times. It fell out of a backpack about the same amount of times. It has at least 500 miles of backpacking and rough car rides.. and still plays like a champ.

But i think they made CD players better back then. The one in my computer and the one in my car right now skip with the slightest imperfection. Which my old Sony discman does not.

And.. I am listening to "A Pleasant Shade of Gray". One of the BEST albums EVER!!! A true piece of ART!!! ahh :) How does this album compare to the rest of Fate's stuff?

-Ponte.. eagerly awaiting Roger Waters and a new DT album...
