    Hey...
Did you guys know that Chuck Shuldiner (Death) has a brain tumor? Isnt
that awful? He's seriously one of the most amazing guitarists/composers in
the metal/rock world that Ive heard. I really hope he pulls through, the
last Death album (The Sound of Perseverence) was awesome!
Also, speaking of concept albums, Fear Factory's "Obsolete" is a good
example too. If you follow the story its actually pretty cool.
       Anyways, just some thoughts....

    Hey all,
It's been a while since I posted, so here is what I found:
Metal Edge in their reviews section had long reviews of Chroma Key, LTE2,
and Planet X, all getting pretty good reviews. I think it is cool that
they actually took a full page for that.

I saw Slayer last night. The first band Hed PE or something was a direct
rip off of Korn, right down to the lead singer's hair, and the way the
guitarist played. System of A Down was horrible. Their lyrics were
similar to old GC about Space, but they all looked like they were heroin
addicts. The guitar player kept humping his guitar throughout the show.
    Sick stuff.
Anyway finally Slayer came out. I think the set list was something like
    this:
    Bitter Peace
    Death's head
    War Ensemble
    Postmortem (killer live)
    Evil something?
Raining Blood (Oh my god that was meta
    Hell Awaits
    Stain of Mind
    In the Name of God
    Scrum
    Dead Skin Mask
    Seasons in the Abyss
    Mandatory Suicide
    Angel of Death (FAAAASTTT)
    Encore:
    South of Heaven
    Chemical Warfare

All in all an excellent show, with Tom busting a string and playing
Raining Blood with three strings. Also what was cool, during a drum roll
in Seasons, The drummer lost a stick, and just hit the double bass to grab
    another.

Compression does not necessarily equal sound degradation, but your instincts
are on the right track. My understanding of how they get so much music on a
minidisk -- and I could be mistaken -- is to "throw away" the very high and
very low frequencies that the typical listener will not notice. I'm not a
minidisk expert, but, depending on what kind of equipment you're playing it
on, you shouldn't notice much of a difference. That having been said,
minidisk IS NOT CD-quality, let alone better; and I suspect that the better
your equipment and room set-up, the more you would notice the medium's
    short-comings.

I don't know the details either, but a MiniDisc will not hold as much as a
CD. The Data Minidiscs seem to be about 140 to 150 MB, whereas a CD stores
650 MB. Minidiscs use compression to store a full CD's worth of audio on
it. And it's a lossy compression, so by definition Minidiscs sound worse
than CDs. The main question is: "Can you tell the difference?"

Larry Gowan is actually pretty good, and when he opened for Styx in Montreal
and Quebec City (just him and a piano) he had standing ovations throughout
the whole concerts. Dennis DeYoung actually pushed him back onstage.
However, only his second album did really well, and that was in 1985. Tony
Levin does play bass on most of his albums, and Jon Anderson did some
back-up vocals on the third one. So, is he a good replacement for Dennis
DeYoung? Absolutely. But is Styx the same band without DDY? I don't think
    so.

I want to start out by saying that this is a partial plug, partial informative post. If you have winamp, or can get a hold of it, there are a few prog rock channels on www.live365.com or yp.shoutcast.com, depending on where you go. I had to hunt them down, but they are clearly there, depending on when they boradcast. One specifically mentioned Dream Theater in the title of the show. Again, you won't see them if they aren't on the air, but if they are on, listen to them, they are pretty cool.

Secondly, I am starting up a comedy show on live365.com. It is called no holds barred radio. We probably won't be doing much prog, (I will be doing a prog rock show soon), but it is a comedy show and if you want to laugh, tune in. go to http://sf.live365.com, click on the comedy genre and look for no holds barred radio. We will be broadcasting every tuesday at around 7:30 p.m. eastern time through 11:00. So, for any prog rock, look at sf.live365.com. And tune into my show, damnit.

He's awful. Not a good choice at all. He had some hits in the 80's when he used to be called Larry. Now he's Lawrence. My friend and I actually met him at a hockey game in Calgary one time and he was so obnoxious to us that we ended up pissing him off by calling him Larry all night. His style doesn't fit with Styx at all.

I saw them on the weekend at a festival called Edgefest but I really don't have any new info on them. They were awesome. Also at Edgefest was Edwin (from I Mother Earth) which was a highlight for me. Although, second best was maybe Courteney Love taking her shirt off.

Minidisc sounds just as good as CD..it's recorded at 44 khz, just as a CD..while it's not at the 48 khz that DAT is at, it is still excellent for anything, even mastering...if there IS any negligable difference in sound between Minidisc and CD, I have not been able to hear it....

I go by experience, and my experience with Sony has been generally a good one, while they might not be the best in audio(I prefer Yamaha personally) and Video(I prefer Mitsubishi), they usually have a product that I haven't had any problems with. As for what I what people say...well, I know someone who works at an electronics store(and no, he's not one of these 20-year old punks that know nothing, he researches and is very well-versed in electronics), and he usually will recommend Sony as one of the top 3 or 5 brands to buy. I'll believe him before I believe any generic Consumer Report. And also, please don't tell me to go read about it, I don't believe everything I read, and neither should you. I may be wrong in what I say or believe, but it makes me happy...just as it makes many of you happy to bad-mouth big corporate giants...:)

44 khz is simply the resolution; how many samples per second are recorded. if you take a beautiful, detailed image at 1600x1200 pixels, and save it as a jpeg with a quality of 1, it will still look like shit even though it has just as much resolution as if you had saved it as a BMP. but it will be a lot smaller. moo.

Apparently, Gowan is EXTREMELY good: at least as good of a singer as Dennis DeYoung was, a better keyboardist, and a much better "showman." I read a bunch of reviews this afternoon from long-time Styx fans, and they were ALL impressed by Gowan (though they all loved Dennis DeYoung). I'm going to see Styx this Sunday in Davenport, Iowa, and I'll try to post a quick review of the concert and Mr. Gowan himself.

I never read any reports. I just know my sony minibox, sony phone, and TWO identical walkmans both crapped out on me. This has been on the jam before, but I don't care, because if I can convince just one person to - for god's sake - not buy sony, then I'll be slightly less bitter.

and aside from all that, Sony is a fucking BITCH for making propietary ac adapter plugs. I'd like to crazy-glue a couple dozen Sony Miniplugs together and do something really illegal to the cavities of the guy who thought them up.
